It's been close to five years since my last review, and Tijuana is still open in Johnsonville…read more That's a feat in itself for a small town, especially when the other two restaurants in town are open a few days a week and the fast food options are notoriously sad.
My mom and I went back to Tijuana's Grill recently when I visited. Our server, Brook, was excellent and the reason for this review being bumped up to four stars. She brought us both mild and hot salsas and warm chips, and the hot salsa was delicious and a great way to start off our meal.
For a small-town Mexican restaurant, the menu is large. I ordered the enchilada lunch special and asked for a cheese enchilada instead of meat, and Brook made sure my meal was vegetarian. My mom had a chicken dish that she really enjoyed, too. Our lunches were about less than $20 even after tax and tip!
We didn't try any drinks, but Tijuana Grill offers a large selection of fruity margaritas. I don't think they have a full bar, but in a small town, it's nice to have somewhere that isn't a complete dive if you want a beer.
The restaurant has tons of parking and some semi-private areas if you want to host a group here. A few weeks ago, a friend hosted a class reunion style dinner here and gave it a positive review. It's not the hippest place for a reunion, but in a small town, it's nice to have a low-cost, accomodating option for gatherings.
Tijuana grill isn't an authentic or gourmet Mexican restaurant, but if you're in Johnsonville or Hemingway and want a quick, filling, and very reasonably priced lunch, it's a great spot.
