Since then, the restaurant has changed names and hands several times, and I keep going back each time to try it. The last time we were there was a couple of years ago. We went for dim sum and were disappointed. Recently, people have been raving about the dim sum under the new ownership, so we went today after church to give it another try. It was jam packed. And after a 15-20 minute wait, we got a table. The restaurant had a crowd, so service was fast and furious. The table we got had spilled tea and the server simply sopped up the tea, using napkins and wiping the entire table with that pile of napkins, and then seated us. (What? No spray or fresh wipe?) We were hungry, sat, and grabbed a few of our favorite items from the rolling carts. We would give the dim sum a solid 7 out of 10, although we thought the rice paper wrapping on some of the items is a bit thicker than we like. Things like the sticky rice, which usually has chopped chicken, pork, shrimp, and Chinese sausage, basically had chopped meat and a little bit of sausage. The football-shaped fried taro dumplings were crispy and tasty but we did not like the filling. The rolling carts give the experience a more authentic feel. I would add a half star for the ambience and freshness of the food. So, 3.5 stars. (Yelp doesn't allow half stars.) However, we have a favorite dim sum restaurant in Pembroke Pines and would rather drive all the way there from Plantation to enjoy a 5-star dim sum experience.

One Star -- The Worst Chinese Restaurant Experience I Have Ever Had…read more I had an extremely disappointing lunch at Toa Toa Dim Sum & Seafood. My meal cost $62.96, but the food quality and the owner's response were completely unacceptable. The waitress recommended the stir-fried conch ($34.99). It was tasteless and so chewy that it felt like eating rubber bands. The green vegetables served with it were extremely tough and almost impossible to chew. I explained the problem to the owner. To my surprise, he admitted that he already knew about it. I asked him why he would continue serving a dish that he knew had a problem and could barely be eaten. He simply smiled. There was no apology, no expression of regret, no discount, and no offer to replace the dish. The pork buns ($6.95) were extremely dry. The steamed shrimp dumplings ($6.95) fell apart as soon as I picked one up with my chopsticks because the wrappers were breaking. When I mentioned this, the owner told me that I could not compare his food with food in Hong Kong. I was not expecting the highest Hong Kong standards--I was simply expecting basic quality from a Chinese restaurant. The final dish, steamed vegetables with oyster sauce, was badly overcooked. The owner said that he had taken over the restaurant about a month ago, although Toa Toa has been here for several years. Based on this experience, I believe the food has become even worse under the new ownership. Every dish I ordered had a quality problem, and the owner's dismissive response made the experience even worse. I left feeling that I had completely wasted $62.96. Even if this food were free, I would not want to eat it again. This was the worst Chinese restaurant experience I have ever had. I cannot recommend this restaurant.

Inside, there are a lot of tables and in talking with my friends and the staff, it can get crazy busy, especially on weekends. But it wasn't too bad on a weekday early afternoon. We went for dim sum; they give you a menu with pictures and names, and a piece of paper to mark on what items you would like. Sometimes they'll names don't quite match but it's not too bad. They bring them from the kitchen when it's ready One tip for you: it's easy to over order, so you might order a smaller number of things and see how it goes, and order more later. Anyway, they have very many seafood and veggie dishes, which suits me just fine. And the waitress was making sure to point out what dishes had meat in them as she brought them to the table. That was very considerate. The price point for each item is on the high side, but the quantity is good. But of course it adds up in a hurry (another reason to see my tip about over ordering!) All in all, a pleasant meal and I was full when I left.

The restaurant feels very authentic to how Chinese restaurants are, the restaurant has a fish tank at the entrance which is very on brand and over all it's a pretty casual space. The food is really good and there are so many items on the menu, that I definitely recommend coming with a few people so you can try all the things you want without it being way too much food. There are a few waiters/waitresses and they all attentive. Even though one person takes the order, the other servers may bring your food, get you another drink, or clear things off of your table. This is also another restaurant I will definitely be back to and highly recommend, especially if you're looking for Dim Sum in Pines.

I've been here a couple of times before, and while they do some things really well, other items can be hit or miss. What I highly recommend: the Cantonese wonton soup for two. The dumpling wrappers are perfectly thin, and the wonton filling is flavorful and well-seasoned. The yu choy is sautéed simply with fresh sliced garlic -- fresh, vibrant, and exactly how it should be. And the water chestnut pudding is THE BEST. It's such a hard-to-find dim sum item, and honestly one of the main reasons we're willing to travel this far to eat here. Unfortunately, the biggest disappointment was the char siu (chashu). I ordered a pound to go, and when I got home, it turned out to be mostly hardened, fatty, gristly pieces. I ended up throwing most of it away. That was especially frustrating considering my girlfriend and I left a $30 tip on a $100 bill. To be fair, most Chinese restaurants aren't known for warm service, but our waiter was friendly and attentive, and he did a good job. Overall, I'll return for the specialties they execute well -- but I'll definitely skip the char siu next time.

This is strictly a takeout restaurant, there are no dining tables, just a counter to place your order and a small bench inside if you need to wait. Honestly, I kind of appreciate the lack of ambiance because those little hole in the wall spots often end up serving some of the best food. The woman who took my order was so warm and welcoming. The menu features all of the American Chinese favorites you would expect, including soups, appetizers, chow mein, lo mein, fried rice, egg foo young, sweet and sour dishes, chicken, roast pork, beef, seafood, and several house specialties. They also offer a lunch special, which includes your choice of entrée, pork fried rice, and wonton soup. For just a little extra, I added a couple of egg rolls. I ordered the honey garlic chicken, beef and broccoli, and chicken lo mein. Everything was packed up with plenty of sauces, crispy fried noodles, and fortune cookies. The food was fresh with generous portions. We enjoyed everything we tried, and there was more than enough left over for another meal later. Combined with the friendly service and reasonable prices, Jan Mei Chinese is a great option when you're craving comfort Chinese takeout. If I'm in the area and looking for another quick meal, I would happily return.

It is not a place intended for take-out, like most Chinese restaurants closer to where I live. The restaurant also has a bar area and a small shop for sweets to go. We were seated right away, at an ample round table. Perfect for sharing multiple dishes. Unfortunately, while the intention was there, the service was not great. The restaurant was simply understaffed. It took a long time to get drinks (which were not good) and even the food was delayed. I'm still giving it 4/5 stars because it is a comfortable place for a nice dinner and the food was very good. I ate at the R&G Lounge in SF recently and Mainland is certainly not at that level, but still enjoyable. The highlights for me were General Tso's chicken, mongolian beef, Moo Shu pork and honey walnut shrimp. All quite good, with well balanced flavors. The Moo Shu pork is served with pancakes and hoisin sauce. It has a high vegetable content and the components complement each other. The "steamed little juicy pork buns", crispy honey chicken and orange chicken were disappointments. These chicken dishes were too sweet and the honey chicken had too much batter. Overall, a good experience and a great place for someone who wants authentic Chinese cuisine in a nice setting.
