There is a tanning salon in Connellsville, PA called Sunset Tanning. It is located at 125 North…read more7th Street. 724-628-811. sunsetanning@zoominternet.net I found out today that my 13 year old daughter had been tanning there, without my permission. Funny thing is, she recently got a staph infection on the back of her legs. I found out she was at the salon today and went in and asked if a girl was tanning with the name of my daughter. The gentleman working stated there was a young lady by that name tanning. I told the guy that I was her mother, she was 13, and she did not have my permission to tan there. He then proceeded to state that she turned in a consent form. I let him know that I was the parent and did NOT sign consent allowing her to tan. I added that she was 13 not only should he require a signed consent, but a parent should accompany the child in person giving verbal permission along with the signed consent. Clearly, that was not the case here. I went on to state that she was just diagnosed with a Staph infection and I would say that she obtained the infection there. Of course, he denied that claim. He told me that I need to quit stating that she contracted a staph infection from his tanning beds in front of his clients. I informed him that I know it is easy to contract an infection from an improperly disinfected tanning bed. He insists it is NOT possible to get an infection from his beds and that my daughter turned in a signed form. I would also like to add that he was unable to produce the supposed consent form or provide a chart showing the number of times and the length of time that she tanned. I am a registered nurse and also a licensed cosmetologist. The disinfectant used to clean tanning beds does NOT come premixed, in most instances. It is a concentrate, in most cases, and must be mixed properly. I am certain that many make the mixture a bit "weak" in order to save money or due to poor measuring, thus, causing the disinfectant to not kill the bacterial and viruses that it should. I also let him know that yes, my child lied; however, she is a child and he is an adult and should be more responsible. My child cannot see a rated R movie, even if I give permission to the theater in person. Viewing a movie is NOT harmful to her health. She can tan without proper supervision, contract a staph infection, and even participate in an activity that is proven to cause cancer without any parental consent.
