On a Sunday afternoon, Liberdade is a veritable paradise of all things Asian street food and other vibrant street action. The area gets packed and it makes for a great afternoon. If you're looking to skip the comida de rua though, I recommend heading to Tanka for their belly-filling buffet. To find the restaurant, look up, it's on the 2nd floor of what appears to be a hotel. There's a balcony where people may be eating, so that should give it away. While I'm not a buffet person, the spread here is pretty amazing and fresh. You can enjoy savory noodles, sushi, meat skewers, fried rice, desserts (hello, mochi and froyo). There's plenty to fill up on, especially if you have a hankering for carbohydrates. read more

For those of you that are looking for a decent place to fill your stomach, i would definitely suggest that you visit Tanka. It is located smack in the middle of Liberdade, right across Liberdade Square (Praça da Liberdade) and the Liberdade Metrô Station (Line 1-Blue). It is actually located on the second floor of a hotel, but out on the front of the building is a noticeable sign that explains the pricing of the buffet. It is an Asian buffet (a mix of Chinese, Korean and Japanese offerings), complete with a whole variety of textures and styles. There is even a section dedicated for fried/skewered foods and a noodle bar (udon/ramen) Along with the food, there is also a dessert bar which is included in the price. Another welcome feature of this place is that you can pay about R$8 (around US $2.55 in today's conversion rate) for unlimited drink refills (soft drinks and ice tea). Those of you that have been in Brasil know that drink refills are not the norm here, so it is a relief that you won't have to keep spending money on more drinks The place is pretty big: there is the main dining area, an outdoor patio and a separate indoor area for a more private setting. Even so, you can definitely expect a huge crowd at almost any hour which you might visit Most of us that have experience with Asian buffets in the States may have come across those that are dirty or something off. To me, Tanka is pretty clean, well-run and the most important part... the food didn't seem funky and overdone. i actually went tonight to eat with a friend and there was this Chinese dish made with squid, peapods and carrots. I really recommend this asian specialized restaurant! There's a varied all you can eat buffet with Korean, Japanese, Chinese and Thai dishes. The price is a bit high specially on weekends, but is worth it! You also have option with a dessert included (frozen yogurt!!!!!) O restaurante fica no coração da liberdade, logo em frente da saída do metro . O ambiente é no meu ponto de vista é bem refinado em comparação com outros restaurantes asiáticos na região. Eles abrem para almoço e jantar, no entanto os preços variam conforme o dia da semana, no dia que eu fui 09/01/2013 estava tendo a seguinte promoção: R$49,90 - almoço de terça a sexta R$59,90 - jantar de terça a sexta R$69,90 - sábado, domingo e feriado. Tanka is an Asian all-you-can-eat that more than satisfied my craving for Asian food. They have a great selection of sashimi, sushi, and other Asian food throughout the day. The quality of the food was amazing for an all-you-can-eat. The price was around R$60 - R$80 reais (depending on the time), and the value was amazing. You can also get the all-you-can-drink add-on for just R$8. I highly recommend Tanka, and I can't wait to go back there myself! read more

I am a japanese food fan that goes to most restaurants of the kind to try them. Here in Belo Horizonte, where I'm from, I've been to the very best of the city. I know that Tanka is not the best of São Paulo, as according to most critics and analysts, but it blew my mind quality-wise. We don't have Japanese food with this variety and quality here in BH. The fish is so fresh, the entrees so varied, the hot plates are delicious. The price is a little steep to be a daily thing, but compared to the all-you-can-eat standards of my city, it is very worthwhile. I went there for a Friday lunch, it was not very crowded. I was very well received by the old Japanese lady there and taken straight away to a free table. I got little bit confused about the how the soda refill system worked and had to ask for information, I consider that a downside. They should at least check if your are new there and give some indications. The inclusion of dessert on the price is brilliant, on the other hand. The ambient is nice, they even have a balcony which I would have picked if the day was not so cold. It was a very satisfying experience and the food quality blew my standards. We don't have this quality here, and believe, I've been to the best Japanese restaurants of BH. ______________________________ Sou um fã de comida japonesa que vai aos restaurantes do tipo para experimentá-los. A inclusão da sobremesa no preço é genial, por outro lado. O ambiente é ótimo, eles tem até um balcão onde eu gostaria de ter me sentado caso o dia não estivesse tão frio. If you would like to eat different types of Asian food, then this place is very good! Living in Brazil, this place is actually a few in which you get free refill with your drinks. Their sushi and sashimi are very fresh, BBQ is good and great sweets!! Although it might be a little pricy and a lot people during meal times... it is still a great place to try! read more
