Wanted to order takeout from this place to support local restaurant during coronavirus outbreak.  Googled them and then clicked on the link that said order online: ( labrador.ai ) and placed an order on line which came to $19.78.  Would not let me pay on line which was odd.  Drove to restaurant to pick up the order.  The cashier had the printed receipt from my online order showing the total $19.78. He rang up the order. Cashier: "That'll be $28" Me: "I placed this order online and it came to $20, not $28" Cashier: "We don't honor the online prices." Me: "Isn't this the receipt that your own printer printed? It shows the total to be $19.78!" Cashier: "That's your problem!"  Me: "Huh? That's my problem?" Cashier: "Yeah" Me: "Can I talk to your manager?" Cashier: "She lives in California." Me: "Can you call her?" Cashier: "She won't answer the phone!" Me: "What? Look man, This is the paper receipt of the online order that came to *your* printer. You looked at this receipt while filling the order. It says the total is $19.78. You are telling me you won't honor this price?" Cashier: "Yup. Take it or leave it. I don't care." I paid him the $28 and left the restaurant.  Will not return.  There are dozens of other places in Newton center that treat customers with more respect and are actually grateful for the business. read more

This place easily has the best burritos around and the nicest guys working there. The fajita burrito is absolutely delicious. The only reason for four stars is because I found out that the workers only receive cash tips so if you leave a tip on a credit card, or Apple Pay, those tips do not go to the workers. if you happen to go in for some delicious burritos, please just remember to put a little cash in your wallet if you or someone who tips for takeout! I know everything is done electronically nowadays, so it's a shame that we have to worry about where our tips are going, but there are unfortunately places like this where credit card tips just go to the restaurant owners. read more

I used to eat at Tango Mango quite often when I lived in Newton. I was craving a burrito, and I was nearby, so naturally, I thought of Tango Mango. I don't know if I remember the burritos being better than they actually were, or the quality of the food has gone downhill in the last couple of years. I was not impressed by the food. Or the service. It was a very slow day. I was the only one waiting in line, yet it took quite some time for the people behind the counter to just warm up the tortilla. They also didn't seem to be paying much attention to what I was saying because I kept having to repeat myself over and over. When I went to check-out, the $6 burrito had turned into a $10 burrito...still don't understand how that happened (I threw out the receipt without thinking at the time). All I added extra was guacamole & sour cream. I know there's a tax, but not 30% worth of it. And I wouldn't mind paying more if the food had been good. It tasted so mediocre. The pork was barely warm. The guacamole was meh. It was just a very forgettable burrito. read more

One star because they were nice. Zero more stars because none of the food was any good. The corn was luke-warm, still covered in remnants of the slime from the can it previously resided in. The beef was old, dry, days old; my 6 year old couldn't bite into it. The rice was days old - moving from the steam plate to refrigerator, and back, over and over again. The 3 year old even refused to eat the cookie, which they bought. Nice people. Awful food. Will need to remember to not come back. read more

Absolutely one of our favorite places! We go every Saturday night for burritos, and if we ever miss a night we're sad. They are truly wonderful people who work there, so kind and they make great food! Couldn't recommend this place enough! I tried this place despite the lackluster reviews. Turns out, the reviews were right. PROS: Prices were reasonable. Beverage selection was great. There are tables inside as well to sit, so it's not just take out. CONS: Service behind the counter was slow and unenthusiastic. Really felt like I was putting them out with a simple order of a burrito. They slap a slice of processed cheese in the burrito? Unnecessary and unappetizing. They have shredded cheese, so this move confused me. The guacamole was more liquid than solid. Yuck. The overall flavor was hard to find. Chicken was bland. Rice was bland. OVERALL: I won't return. There are tons of burrito places and I'll go out of my way to get a great one. read more

So I came in here the other day on my lunch break, and let me tell you, the other Yelp reviews are spot on. Portions are smaller, food is blander, and prices are higher. How does that make sense? Not to mention the lady that works the front counter is as rude as ever. My coworker asked for extra rice because they put that little in his burrito and the lady at the counter said she wouldn't charge him like she was doing him a favor. Lady, how much does rice cost? That extra scoop legitimately probably cost less than a penny. I can understand charging extra for meat and other things, but rice? GIVE ME A BREAK. Also, the portions are so small that they are at the point where you should probably request double everything in your burrito to even get full/have some sort of flavor. This place is a joke and just an inferior version of Anna's. The lady talks about overhead costs, well Anna's has multiple spots in Brookline, has fair prices, and people wait out the door for their food because the service if friendly, portions are reasonable, and the food has flavor. AVOID THIS PLACE. I'm personally hoping it goes out of business and Anna's moves right in so I don't have to drive to Brookline during lunch for a halfway decent burrito. I also get that you are catering to Newton people and they generally have coin, but so do people in Brookline and you don't see the owners of Anna's trying hard to squeeze every penny out of their customer. UPDATE: After posting the review below, I have read the many many other reviews about how this restaurant PURPOSELY OVERCHARGES its customers and when they are called out on it, they have the audacity to argue with you. If I could give this place a negative infinity I would. Why should I pay money to be scammed?? During the COVID pandemic, no one answers the phone for phone ahead orders so we had to wait in the restaurant to order and receive our food. When we got home we discovered the wrong food was given plus we paid $51 for only $31 of food. Tried calling to rectify the situation and still no answer! Horrible customer service and accountability for their mistakes. There are way too many competitors out there with better authentic food! read more

The food isnt bad, in fact the burritos are good, in a particular way the meat. I've had the chipotle chicken and the spicy chicken, and both were excellent. But it's overpriced. I never leave without paying like $15, which is kind of ridiculous for a burrito and chips. I've been going to TM for some time. Food quality is almost always good. However, tonight I ordered using their online form. I wanted to pick up the order a few hours later but I couldn't find that option so I clicked the order button and immediately called the restaurant. This is my favorite Mexican food in Newton! I've been going here since I was a high schooler, and Tango gave us shirts and free drinks as students. The atmosphere is authentic, the staff is nice, and the owner is very personable and kind. So, this is what it takes to compel one to post their first review... I'm sorry to all of those business owners who have treated me right all these years for not writing a positive review. Oh well, I guess you have to start somewhere. So the first time I got belittled by the owner of Tango Mango for questioning how small the portions were, I was bitter but I was stupid enough to continue going there (not because the food is so great but because it's walking distance to my house and it's basically the only game in town). Hint: huge opportunity for someone thinking about opening a similar inexpensive, somewhat healthy fast food establishment in Newton Centre. I consider myself a burrito pro. I eat burritos at least five times a week from various establishments. You know them all, Boca Grande, Anna's, El Pelon, Bolloco, etc. I know my burritos. This time, I ordered a pork burrito and I swear, if there was more than two forks full, I'd be shocked. The owner was standing off to the side and did not see how much there was. I ordered a "Big Burrito" and asked the guy making it "is that a Big Burrito because it's an awfully small portion?" and he asked if I wanted more and if I wanted to pay for it. I said no, don't worry about it. I was planning on just walking out quietly because this was not the first time I've had the same problem here (inconsistently small portions, embarrassingly small, no accountability, and no sense of the customer is right). Then, the owner comes over and starts raising her voice at me, "what, you want more? You want rice? You want salsa? What, he put 4 ounces of meat in there, what do you want?". I said "I don't want anything" and I put the sodas I had in my hand back in the cooler. The guy making it did not measure or weigh the portion. He randomly grabbed some meat with tongs and she's insisting there's 4 ounces. I just said to forget it, I know my burritos. I don't want it anymore and walked out. I'm a business owner. My clients and my relationships are everything to me. I can't do business with people who do not share the same business virtues I do. I work too hard to give my money to someone who treats their customers like garbage. My only regret is going back after the first time this happened to me. I'm not stupid though. I have been a culinary professional for the last 20 years, 2 of them most recently at a Southwestern/South American joint in the Back Bay and i try to remain impartial when it comes to judging any establishment. I had been here once before with my girlfriend about 8 months ago and neither of us were impressed then. But hey......maybe they've changed? nope. I stopped by here for a quick bite on way to Watertown. I walked in around 11:45 and it was lightly busy. I went up to the counter and they had the menu tacked to the glass barrier in front of their hot well. i wanted something fairly quick, so i chose their "QB Supreme". That's $6.50 for a quesadilla with sour cream and guacamole. I spoke up to the cook across the line, telling him what i want...and immediately the guy starts to steam a tortilla with cheese. I quickly corrected him that i wanted a "QB Supreme....a quesadilla, not a burrito". Apparently they have a burrito called the "BB Supreme" that's a burrito with sour & guac. Easy mistake, take it in stride, The cook asks me what i would like in it and i say carnitas...let me stop right now. I have been to maybe.....10 of this style taquerias in the greater Boston area....i know what they pretty much generally should be doing. The portion of carnitas was underwhelming. i guarantee if you put it on a scale, it would be well under 2 ounces. Then the salsa....maybe a hair shy of 1 ounce. Let's not forget the sour cream and guacamole that i have paid an extra $2 for. As soon as it went on....i lost it. The guy put a literal DRIZZLE of each...a mere taste. I'm paying extra here.....i want a full portion...so yes...i complained....i explained what i was getting to the cook, that i was paying extra.....and i damn well better get extra...not a taste. Every single cook( 3 of them) looked at me like i had 3 heads. Just because i'm a white guy in Newton Center....does not make me ignorant or naive. Not trying to be racist here....but these 3 non-white cooks....they gave me the worst service i've ever had at a taqueria....and did nothing to make me want to come back. The icing on the cake? The guy at the register told me "there's no reason to talk to my cooks like that". Really? How about..." We're sorry, how can we make it better for you?" If you want lip-smacking deliciousness of the Taco Shop kind....head to Los Amigos on Centre Street in West Roxbury as well as in Newton. read more

The only reason that I go to Tango Mango is when I am too lazy to drive to Brookline for Anna's Taqueria or Boca Grande. It's an okay alternative and gets you full but the food is kind of flavorless; the meats and salsa taste very bland. Also, the "Big" Burrito isn't all that big so if you're looking to pig out, don't expect the same portions that you'd get from Anna's. Even though they give you less food, it is still priced a bit higher than Anna's. This place is nothing special but I am glad it's there for those days when I'm feeling sluggish. read more

Wow, people are all over the place on this one. I am easy to please when it comes to burrito's because I put so much hot sauce on it (and also ask for extra jalapeno's) that I don't really even taste what I eat. My mouth just burns - and I like it. I am also a fan of the places that melt the cheese onto the tortilla, which Tango Mango does but Chipotle, for example, does not. I could actually detect some of the flavor of the spicy chicken and it was really good - and so nicely shredded that it was really soft. I agree it's a dumb name but I don't care. I like this place. Service is fast and friendly. We were in and out (we got take-out) in under 5 minutes today. I also like that the menu offers a little more variety than just burrito's (though that is all I've had from here). read more

One problem w/ this place is the name. Is it me or does "Mango Tango" just sound better than "Tango Mango"? I think it has to do with the fact that some middle aged Newton-ites thought it would be a good idea to convert their house help into food preparers at their taqueria venture. Ok, onto the food. After about three months of ordering for myself and my coworkers about once a week, I take back everything I said about Tango Mango being able to handle large, complex orders well. Two weeks ago, I attempted to place our order, and was met with a phone that rang and rang and then was picked up and placed on the counter without so much as a "Hello, can you please hold?" I waited about fifteen minutes before I tried to call again and got a busy signal. Since I was planning to order 8+ items - all with different specifications - I figured I'd walk down and leave my order in person and come back for it since they were clearly busy. When I got there, the woman at the register shot me with a dirty look and an almost sarcastic "Is there something I can help you with?" and when I tried to explain that I'd like to leave an order with her, she interrupted to sputter angrily at me about how busy they were and how she didn't know what she could possibly do to accommodate my request. She finally acquiesced to take my order on paper but grumbled and mumbled about how ridiculous it was the whole time and eventually ripped the paper out of my hands with an "I don't know WHAT I'm going to do with this!" as she walked away. I didn't realize what a crazy request it was to place a takeout order at a restaurant! A much longer wait for an order during busy times I can totally understand, but the worst treatment I've ever received at a takeout place? You'd think our collective need for lunch was a personal attack on the cashier. I definitely won't be going back to Tango Mango; there are plenty of places to eat in Newton Centre and I certainly won't starve, but I'm really bummed out by the whole experience. read more

I would give this place zero stars. Tonight's hair-raising experience included a man coming in before me complaining that his twelve year old bit into a huge piece of "valve". The owner simply handed him a $10 bill, barked back that shes been there 8 years and never had a complaint, and to tell his kid to get over it, that "meat is meat". I thought maybe he was being dramatic, but my own steak burrito was loaded with inedible chunks of anything BUT steak. Whatever that meat was, it was gamey and chewy. My wife's burrito included a nasty surprise halfway down: a large section of tripe. That one went straight to the trash. This place needs to be inspected/ shut down ASAP. I have been a patron of this place for a VERY long time and have been here 100+ times. However, it is getting very hard to support. There is one guy who assembled the food who has a rude attitude. I ordered a quesadilla and he put a minuscule amount of meat and charged me for double meat when I said "can I get a little more than that?" This has happened to me over 20 times. Honestly I loved this place and love to support local businesses but if I go to Anna's or Los Amigos I get 75% more meat for the same price. It's a real shame, I hope they get their act together. So I work in the area, so I thought I would give the restaurant a shot and call in an order. Nope. I later learned when I decided to walk over (and wait) for my food that the cashier "doesn't answer the phone when she's busy." I have never heard of a restaurant act in such a way. What if I was calling to see the hours of operation or to inquire whether they were open? They don't care. I got a better look at how little they care when I walked in the building. It was decorated poorly, the line to order/pay was poorly organized and the employees didn't seem to care about you either. This was reinforced by the grumpy cashier when she was explaining how she doesn't like to answer the phone. I ordered a quesadilla that was premade with slices of cheese in it. I added chicken, onions and peppers and it quickly became very sloppy. The flavors were unimpressive and the meal was overpriced. I will not be returning. read more

Not bad. Not good. I've decided that this place is tolerable if you stick to a vegetarian course, because it's mostly their meat that screws up a good burrito. The steak is stringy and tasteless. The spicy chicken is equally flavorless, I have no idea where they get spicy from. Honestly, the best luck I've had so far is when I just said "screw it, just veggies". I am horrified. My dad stopped in for lunch while at work to grab a burrito for him and a steak quesadilla for me. The food took forever. My bag only contained (of course once we were too far away from there to go change it) a mangled tortilla with very little cheese. Where did the insides go to my quesadilla? So my husband and I have been fairly loyal customers for the last few years and for a while it seemed like Tango Mango was just getting better and better. Recently we've been noticing the burritos going down in size, and the prices being jacked up. Once upon a time we could order 2 big burritos with cheese and sour cream and maybe chips or something and it was around $11. Now everytime we go in, just for burritos (even medium sized ones) we walk out having paid close to $15-18 dollars. Just last night we ordered two regular sized burritos and noticed the porportions diminished. I get the economy sucks and the restaurant business is tough and it is Newton, but come on. Now you're starting to alienate your most loyal of customers. read more

I am a big fan of Tango Mango for a few reasons... You can call in your order while driving and it is ready in about 3 minutes- it is good for you fast food (I dont do McDonald's/BK/taco bell). Healthy options include: fiesta salads, fish tacos and whole wheat burrito wrap! The workers here are always so friendly- I will say that I have heard the place serves "bland/salt-less" food. I dont usually put salt on anything so I enjoy the taste of the food here... you can always add the salt people! read more
