Welcome to brewery #278 for me. I was very pleased with the vibe at Tangled Roots. Very nice place! I sat at the bar and ordered a flight. Great service although they were a little busy. Los Pollos Hermanos Mexican lager was a good Mexican lager. Very easy to drink. Kit Kupfer amber ale had a little fruity flavor I couldn't quite place but when I looked at the beer menu it described it as "hint of peach". Yeah, I think that's it. A very light amber ale. Very nice beer! SWPFTD would enjoy this one. Midnight Mirage black IPA...ok, this was interesting. And I don't mean that in a snide way at all. It's a black IPA with a whole host of fruit flavors. Grapefruit was definitely there on the back of the tongue on the finish, as well as apricot but that was more on the nose. Not a heavily bitter IPA at all. This might be my favorite so far. Decadent Orange Dobroy Nochi imperial stout had a really good orange flavor to it. I still think the back IPA is my favorite though. I wasn't really hungry but perused the menu and ordered a starter of the fresh artisanal bread with an awesome honey butter. There was another butter with it but I forgot what it was while under the thrall of the honey butter. I ate ALL of that myself. I truly enjoyed TRB. The beers were great, the bread was excellent, and the service was good as well. Absolutely LOVE Tangled Roots! I went here to celebrate my friend's 40th birthday and I'm so glad she chose this place! We got the mozzarella appetizer and it was fresh with perfectly seasoned and crunchy breading. The vodka sauce that was paired with it was fantastic. My friend ordered the shrimp salad and really enjoyed it. I ordered the fish and chips and was super satisfied. The fish was fresh and the homemade tartar sauce was delicious! They gave my friend a complimentary birthday cookie skillet. I tried it and was in sweet heaven! The cookie was hot and topped with vanilla ice cream and caramel. A nice sweet treat and awesome that it was on the house for my friend's special birthday! Fantastic food, service, and atmosphere! We had a very enjoyable time, and they have a great rewards program. If you're going to starved rock, this is only about 15 minutes or less away from most of the outdoor hiking areas. Well worth the short travel. The beer selection is excellent and they have many very good house beers. I had the chicken pot pie special. Best to make reservations on busier weekends, but there is a bar where you can grab a drink for the wait or make your way up the street to do a little shopping until your table is ready. Our server was knowledgeable and attentive, and very patient when we asked about the rewards program. For sure give Tangled Roots a try and I think you will not be disappointed. read more

Went out of our way to stop here due to good yelp reviews, on our trip south. It wasn't worth the time to travel from the interstate. The beers all had a strange metallic aftertaste. We also got the hummus, which was drowning in lemon flavoring, which ruined it. Pretzels were ok. The veggies that accompany the hummus were good too. The service was mediocre, however they were nice. read more

My dog and I hiked over ten miles in Starved Rock SP. The patio is dog friendly so I stopped in here for a Belgian witbier and then a Helles, which goes so well with the flatbread . My margherita flatbread was very tasty and the beers were spot on. The only annoying thing was the loud through traffic through this scenic and historic town. read more

Our experience was decent overall. The highlight was definitely the wide selection of beers available, catering to all tastes. We tried two flights and were satisfied with our selections. The food was mediocre and nothing noteworthy. I would suggest dropping by for a beer, as that seems to be their specialty. We did a 9 mile hike at Starved Rock and decided to wind down at this nearby shop. The brewery is much larger than I anticipated. Found street parking easily right in front. Our dog was with us from hiking so I asked for a table outside as far away as possible from another table that had a dog. They were able to accommodate without issue. They even offer water bowls for animals. As usual, I probably over ordered. Got both types of pretzels and fish and chips. My gf got a burger. Skip the salted pretzel. I highly recommend the everything spice. It's garlicky. The fish and chips was very good but I couldn't finish it. They were still good reheated next day! We had a couple of drinks. Cider menu wasn't extensive but at least I found something to sip. Service was great. We were able to take our time without feeling rushed. Food might have taken a little longer than most restaurants, but we were in zero rush and preferred it that day. Unisex restrooms. Two annoying things were... water slowly dripping from somewhere above our table area. It was so hot so it didn't get anything wet, but we got at least one hit our food and most of the rest on my gf's head. I like craft beer. And whenever I travel I try to visit local breweries. It's a great way to try new beer, get a feel for the local vibe and support a small business. Luckily for me, I stumbled upon Tangled Roots. I was in Morris, Il for a wedding and randomly picked up some of their beer (Devil's Paint Box) at the liquor store. It was great. In fact, it was so good we decided to trip out Ottawa to check out the brewery. Both the beer and the brewery experience did not disappoint. The brewery is located in the heart of downtown Ottawa. Finding it and parking were easy. The taproom is beautifully set up. It is a great drinking environment with plenty of seating and TVs to watch sports (or whatever else on). I grabbed a seat at the bar, got a flight of beers and watched the conclusion of the third-place match in the Women's WC. The beer was fantastic. I wish I was able to find it back East but no such luck. My only gripe is that my cell reception was really poor when I was sitting at the bar. It's set far back away from the street. This combined with the fact that it's a pain to log onto their WIFI (you need to submit an e-mail) was a buzz kill. But it's also not a deal-breaker. It'd be nice if it was just a standard password-based login. This is a great diamond in the rough sort of find. If you're anywhere in the area I'd suggest swinging by and grabbing a pint. In fact, I liked the beer so much I brought some back with me. Oh, and try to pick up one of the bar stools. Kudos to the employee/s that picks them up and sets them up every day. read more

This updated review is for their take-out! We were in the area and decided to stop by to snag some brews to-go. The process was super simple. We walked in the main restaurant door, the other doors were blocked off and used for staff to help avoid unnecessary contact. Once in, the hostess directed us to cooler to grab the beer we wanted and check out at the bar. The had no one sitting inside and all employees were wearing masks. All of the chairs were put up on the tables to encourage social distancing. Great work team! They did have some seating outdoors along the sidewalk that a few people were sitting at. The tables were all nicely spread out. The beer selection was impressive! They had a ton of seasonal options and the sizes to choose from were either larger bottles or 6 or 4 packs to-go. They also sell growlers/crowlers to go. We tried the amber ale, pilsner lager, and the farmhouse IPA. Their fridge had extra spaces for other seasonal beers that were sold out so it looks like the beer was popular! My husband liked the IPA because of the hop forward taste. I liked the amber better because it had a fuller bodied taste. We will definitely be back next time we are in the area! read more

More Ashley, please! This place is great, with a lot of food choices, all of them good, and fast service. We arrived as a group of six, and shortly after we arrived, we asked to be moved to a booth instead of a table. Ashley was more than happy to make that happen, and she switched her section to stay with us. I enjoyed the artisan bread starter, and the burger entree, and I ESPECIALLY enjoyed the service. Ashley was very informative about all the choices, on all the menus. She was fast, responsive and funny. A good time brings me back to an establishment. This restaurant is just ok. We started with "jumbo" mushrooms. We got 3 small mushrooms at $14. That's almost $5 a mushroom. We also ordered the Artisanal bread with garlic and herb butter & pineapple coconut honey butter. Sounded delicious. The bread was so charred that we couldn't taste the flavor of the butter. If you tasted the butter without bread you could barely taste the flavors. Missed opportunity-that could have been wonderful. My friend ordered a cup of cauliflower soup. It was tasty but super small. Four bites. This restaurant is a bit pricey for what you get. Funny story. I ordered a dinner salad and asked what was on it. I asked if there were red onions on it. When she brought it she said they were "regular" onions so she put them on the side...they were red onions. Eating with your besty makes even marginal restaurants fun. read more

Great brewpub eatery in the very cool and historic town of Ottawa Illinois. Street parking was not a problem when we went. The building is inviting with brick interior and high ceilings. The burgers were pretty great. Ample size and cooked as ordered. House fries were tasty. The beer was good. Tangled Root could be a 5 star in the future. We had a kind but frustrated server that missed the morning meeting that let the staff know what items they were out of. Totally understand that covid has interrupted the supply chain, but maybe mark up or reprint the paper menus so we don't order what you don't have? Or use the boards on the walls? We'd check out Tangled Root again if we are in the area. read more

I went there last night looking for a good meal. Their menu has one full paragraph in flowery words explaining each option and the problem was the pork chop. I got was a RAW in the middle and I don't mean kind of I mean fully raw in the middle. Yes, there was a flowery presentation and all kinds of other French words that help describe the option, but I think they forgot that cooking the meat is part of what makes a meal good. How hard is it to stick a thermometer in? The server and the manager were both very nice when I pointed it out, which takes a lot for me to do. I'm not the kind of guy that typically complains about a meal but raw pork just isn't something I go for. read more
