Even though they are a membership based business, once I said no I wasn't interested in the membership they didn't pressure me or ask again. The massage room was well kept, clean, relaxing and the bed was big enough for my tall, plus sized body (you would be surprised at how many places aren't very size inclusive). It's kind of a dump, which doesn't discount it entirely, occasionally that can make a place feel charming (as long as it still feels clean). I had always been relatively pleased with my experience, the prices, the tanning beds, etc. there. That is, until recently. Panama Joes recently was taken over by new management and it's gotten really bad. First, they are not replacing the bulbs. There is no reason a person as pale as I am should be in the step-up 10 minute bed for the full time and not even get a little red. Not even break a sweat! Those bulbs are OLD. They have a sign permanently painted on the window that says "Hot New Bulbs". They aren't. It always says that. When I asked about how often the bulbs are replaced, I was told "about every month, month and a half". Come on. Quit blowing smoke. Which brings me to my next complaint. Panama Joes seems to only hire chain smokers. I'd say 75% of the time when I walk up to the door, the employee of the day and at least 2 of her friends are smoking away, rolling their eyes that they have to snuff out their cig to come help a customer. I don't want to walk through a cloud of smoke. It's awkward that you are having a makeshift party at a tanning salon. And yes, I do see the irony in complaining about the smoking when I'm trying to do something else viewed as unhealthy. But smoking is mad gross and I don't want to have to smell it. I know there is a tanning tax now, but the prices on packages here rival what you pay at a nice, professional, clean tanning salon. In fact they may be higher. I'm willing to pay a little extra for convenience, but this is no longer convenient. Lastly, there are handmade signs all over Panama Joes, alerting customers to various things (prices, hours, lotions, etc). Most of these signs have some pretty gross misspellings on them, blatant ones that smack you in the face with bold, neon writing. Maybe I'm being overly picky here, but come on! It's spelled CLEARANCE! I don't know what CLAREANCE is!!! Less time smoking and more time on spell check, perhaps. I won't be back!

My sister is regularly tanning there now with her gift, and claims that it is extremely packed in there and very uncomfortable with people chatting and just friends hanging out in there and chatting with the employee. She says the doorways always blocked with people and their boyfriends just hanging out and is even hard to maneuver her way inside let alone feel comfortable. Over all it is just not a professional environment. I think if they had more hours, more employees to work, were more professional, and knowledgeable, and had better customer service it would be a great tanning salon. I've been to multiple tanning salons all my life and this is by far the worst me and my sister have experienced. I MUCH prefer honesty like that to salons who cram you in and leave you waiting with false hopes of getting work done.
