I stopped in as a walk-in on a Saturday afternoon and was welcomed right away by the friendly dogs. After being told that they preferred reservations and that the schedule was full, Jenni (one of the barbers), asked what type of cut I was looking for. He couldn't keep his head still and was all over the place. Jen, as I observed, was patient and kind. Once finished, the "effervescent" kid went on his merry way, mother in frazzled tow. Jen maintained the same patience and kind demeanor with me. Since returning home to Wilmington from Los Angeles, I have been hacked twice by inferior stylist. Today, I was listened to and considered. This is exactly the sort of place you'll want to take your tween, teen, or any sort of man who feels comfortable using the words "Bro" and "Dude". It's hipster but in an unassuming manner with relaxed leather couches, NC craft beer for sale, and a beautiful Great Dane who greets you. The haircut that my son got was very good. I wasn't present but he said that Hayden really asked him what he wanted in regards to style, closeness of sideburns, use of product, etc. He came out looking sharp and was really happy with the cut. Tame The Mane is pretty darn good. I think they can be great too and I have some simple suggestions. Pros: - Nathan, the owner, cut my hair and he did a solid job. I showed him a photo of a great haircut I had gotten a year or so back and he did a pretty spot on job with it. He was also great at talking, which is a huge part of the job. - You can buy beer and drinks here while you wait. That is a huge plus and super smart I think. - Tons of parking. - You can make reservations! Negatives: - I showed up as a walk-in and there was no real sign in sheet. I am pretty sure someone who showed up after me as a walk-in went ahead. I think that they should simply have a sign in sheet. Whenever a barber is ready they can go and ready the next name on the list and voila. This is fair and easy. - They had a TV and your standard magazines, but I think of barbershops as somewhat social. I suggest board games for those days when you have a bunch of people waiting. That would make the time fly by. All in all this place is pretty darn good and I won't hesitate to come back. Next time I will be smart and make a reservation. read more

After trimming, grooming and handling my beard on my own for the past 2 years, I felt it was time to make an appointment to have it professionally cleaned up. For Valentine's Day last year, my wife purchased a digital gift card for me from Tame the Mane so that I could leave the pampering to a skilled barber / stylist for once. Almost a year later, that gift card was redeemed. I easily set up a same day appointment through TTM's online website, where you are guided through a simple appointment process consisting of dates and times, your preference of stylist / barber or you can simply book it at random, if maybe this is your first time in or you like to live life on the edge? I did just that and locked in a 12p appointment with Molly Hartsfield. As I entered, it just so happened that Molly was waiting for my arrival at approx. 11:57a. She introduced herself in a cordial manner and led me back to her station toward the back of the building, where the majority of the stylists / barbers were. The place has incredibly cool-ass vibes with a main, modern color scheme mixed with rustic fixtures and decor. They had some 90's alternative rock playing (Hell yes to you for playing Smashing Pumpkins) at the right decibel level where you didn't need to raise your voice to have a conversation nor have to focus hard to hear what was playing. Well done with your music level. Molly was attentive and asked many questions in order to understand what I was thinking. Honestly, I had no clue as to what I really wanted so I left the majority of it all to her, since she's the pro. Although my beard wasn't unruly at all due to my consistent trimming of it at home using my small barber kit, it was still bugging me in certain places, especially the hard to see places such as the back of the jaw line etc. She took her time, getting very close to where she was trimming, in order to be pinpoint precise with her lines and eliminating certain strays. Overall, the entire experience took approx. 20 mins and she certainly cleaned it up by reducing some bulk, faded the sideburns and eliminated split / dead ends. Molly, nice job!! I am very pleased with how this turned out and I would recommend you to anyone with some beard taming needs. As an added bonus, I was able to meet and interact with "Cash", the Tame the Mane mascot dog, which was awesome...although, Cash may be a horse and I'd be hard pressed not to think that some small child has harnessed up and ridden on the back of Cash at some point. Overall, Tame the Mane is a fantastic place to book an appointment for the dude(s) in your life, unless you're already the dude reading this? :). 5 STARS!! read more

Five stars! I made two last minute appointments for a 1 and a 2 year old thinking my toddler was ready for a "big boy haircut". He was not! My 1 year old did get an awesome cut, I didn't catch her name but she was very patient with us and did an AWESOME job!!!! The results were always lackluster and full of waiting, nasty smells and the blah blah blah of gossip followed by $70 just for a cut. At last it dawned on me to go to a barber shop! I moved to Wilmington from LA a little bit less than a year ago. Until today, I have had a hard time finding a barber with the sort of intuitive awareness of style I've been looking for. The first thing you'll notice when you come into Tame the Mane is the very tasteful but comfortable aesthetic they've managed to cultivate for the shop. There's a very comfy sofa, access to to refreshments (including alcoholic ones), and a sense of style you'd usually find in a more metropolitan setting. There was a steady stream of business the entire time I was in there but for being a walk-in, my wait was definitely more than acceptable. I had Hayden cut my hair and he did a fantastic job. He really took his time to do everything right and you can tell he knows what he's talking about. He's got that sort of intuitive passion for what he does that really makes him great.
