Odd spot for delta tomales. You stand outside at a window of a small building and order. It's the first time for us having them. I liked them well enough, but Boss Lady was not a fan. It must be one of those local things where most locals know it and live it. Also ordered a single burger. It was better than the tomale. This is by far the worst tamale that I have ever eaten. If the Mexicans ever find out that you are desiccating their food like this. They may burn this place to the ground. My recommendation is to fly to Oxnard Ca and find a very nice migrant worker with their trunk open and see what a real tamale taste, looks and smells like. Nothing wrong with the tamales, they just didn't impress me. Maybe I'm just use to really well seasoned food being that I am from south Louisiana. I'm not sure, I just found these to kinda taste like they were just from a box or something. As I mentioned, there is nothing wrong with them. I was able to eat all of them and I didn't find them to taste bad, just nothing to brag about. I wanted to leave my review, since all the reviews were either 5 or 1 star it seemed and I found them average. If your hungry and really want tamales, then get them. This was our first stop on our road trip to Savannah. We got a dozen tamales They were the absolute worst we have ever had. One bite by each of us and neither could even swallow it. We couldn't figure out where the funky taste was coming from, meat or masa. But that doesn't really matter. Bad is bad whatever the reason. A total waste of money. Were it not for Anthony Bourdain and Parts Unknown I would have likely never known of the presence and place of tamales in Mississippi Delta (and beyond) foodways. When looking for a lunch on the go in Vicksburg while driving from Flawdah to home in Fort Worth it occurred to us to Yelp "tamales". Found this gem. Located in a nondescript building on the I-20 service road, the tamales are served from a window inside a small entry foyer. They are steaming hot and delicious. These are smaller than we're used to seeing in Texas. Very similar to the ones we enjoyed earlier this year at Doe's Eat Place in Greenville. MS. Greasier (oh yeah!) than Texas tamales, with wonderful spicy heat and flavor. This will be a must stop for us on this trip from now on. read more

And she told me to go to The Tamale Place. I'm used to big, thick tamales that you find in California. These are thinner, with a brown masa instead of white. But wow, the flavor! And the shop is just this tiny little place that wraps up a dozen tamales in newspaper and hands them to you, still steaming. Single tamale costs more than the each different bundles. $2.50 for 3, $5 for 6, or $10 for 12 beef tamales. Oh, they said that in the past few years that they have been using a credit card machine. I love tamales in corn husks. Each tamale texture was just right. I don't know why they are wrapped in a white paper and then in newspaper (maybe to absorb the grease and maintain the temperature). I ate them in my car. I did not need any added heat. Oh, they sell frozen tamales by the dozens only (so $10). read more

Look: you know it's legit food when it comes in an old grocery bag wrapped in old newspaper. Now, you non-Mississippi folks will all be saying, "Wait what? It comes wrapped in what?" But listen to me, down here, the best foods are often found in a gas station or a hole-in-the-wall and they don't come with all those bourgeois accoutrements you get at some other restaurant. I say all that becuase this place makes the best damn tamales in Vicksburg, maybe even some of the best along the Delta Tamale Trail. I've never had a bad experience. Folks here are kind, they know what they're cooking, and they cook it well. Their boudin is damn fine as well, so don't just come for the tamales. Note: if you haven't had MS Delta tamales, they're "red-hot" as Robert Johnson says. They're smaller than the Hispanic varieties, they're meatier, they're more moist, and their flavor is lights out. You're missing out if you haven't had this joint, legitimately. Not only are they amazing in flavor, but you can't beat the price. A dozen tamales for around $10?!? Lord, have mercy. You'll be coming back, I'd bet my seat on the train to Glory on it. Eat here. We were coming across the MI river. My son and I were starving so we went on yelp and this place had 5 stars. They closer at 8 and we got there at 8:10. The guys kept the store open for us late. Wow!!!! One of the best meals in a plastic bag I've ever eaten. Ordering is easy, full dozen or half dozen? Ask for plasticware and some napkins to round out the dinner. Hole in the wall with really great smells entering the door. There was a line, and that says a lot! I got a dozen tamales (only beef) enclosed in corn husk and wrapped in newspaper. Let me tell you, I'm not a beef eater, but those tamales were mild (heat) & very good. My biggest complaint was the sodium level(too salty). True Southern gem for tamales. Walk into an indoor tamale stand with ample parking outside - as in huge parking lot. Remember, it's only a stand - no seating available. Generally, order, pay, go! $8.50/dz of tamales. Has firm texture that cuts easily but does not fall apart upon cutting. Be sure to add tabasco/hot sauce on it for extra flavoring. I can't say that these are the best hot tamales. They are the only hot tamales I've ever had but they are awesome. Also, the burgers here are so good they should be illegal. These are the first Mississippi Tamales I've ever eaten and I was very happy with them. I was a little concerned when I saw that I could only order them by the half dozen or dozen but when I saw the size I was relieved that I could eat them all. They are about half the size of tamales on the west coast and the corn tastes different. Also they are moist all the way through. They only come in one flavor but I don't know if that's the standard here or not. Compared to west coast tamales, which tend to be slightly dry in the corn portion, these were delicious. Now I'm definitely going to try more tamale stands when I come back to Vicksburg. read more

When looking up restaurants in the Vicksburg, MS area, my Dad and I stumbled across this wonderful place. We both love tamales so we were super excited to try some Mississippi tamales! When we first saw this place, we were a little disheartened thinking that it wouldn't be a good place to eat. We walked it, ordered, and had a pleasant conversation with the man working the counter! The best tamales! Moist and temperature hot every time! They tend to get spicy the more you eat. Saltine crackers, which can be also be purchased here, helps offset the spice. Make sure you go early because once they're gone, they're gone. read more
