Talkeetna, Alaska is one of these old-fashioned towns showcasing a few pioneering storefronts and some charming streets.
Although there isn't much to do here other than walking around or booking tours within the area, still...Talkeetna is fine as a sidetrack break from the drive between Anchorage and Denali.
To be specific...it is 231 miles between Anchorage and Denali, which is only 4 hours long. But, if you'd like to visit Talkeetna, which a lot of folks suggest as a worthwhile tourist spot...then it is easily accessible and not far off the beaten path.
Whether you are headed north or south and vice versa...Talkeetna is located 114 miles north of Anchorage and 146 miles south of Denali.
If you use Google Maps, you can find it.
I was curious as to what Talkeetna offered so I decided to make the pitstop since I had extra time. Upon arriving in town, I parked along the side streets for free and started exploring.
Here are some Talkeetna highlights....
- Antler Outpost - unique Alaskan gifts.
- Denali Brewpub Restaurant.
- Talkeetna Air Taxi - for booking a flightseeing tour around Denali or even landing on a glacier.
- Nagley's Store - convenience store for sandwiches, drinks, ice, supplies.
- Mountain High Pizza Pie.
- Roadhouse - lodging, meals and a bakery.
- West Rib Deli & Pub and Liquor Store.
- Alaskan Sled Dog Tours.
- Mercantile Store selling clothing, jewelry and antiques.
- Fairview Inn Lodging.
- Thai, Chinese, Sushi, Indian Cuisine Restaurant.
The entire town of Talkeetna isn't big and it's all within suitable walking distance. Maybe there are 6 - 7 streets in total.
So...if you are just coming to window shop or grabbing some souvenirs and a bite to eat, then all you need are a few hours time.
I casually took in the surroundings and grabbed a few pictures. It was quiet for the summer travel season which added to the laid-back setting.
Overall, I have visited better lowkey/under the radar towns than Talkeetna, but...between Denali and Anchorage there isn't much to stop for and many people I interacted suggested Talkeetna. Plus, I believe it is one of the primary stops for the Denali Railroad Tour if you choose to take that route.
