This was an optional excursion offered on our Celebrity Alaskan cruise tour. It was described as a…read morejet boat so hubby expressed a desire to go. The company picked us up around 5:30pm at Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge where we were staying. We boarded the boat at the riverfront park. There were a total of eleven of us. Jesse and Amanda were our two guides. They took turns providing information about wildlife. Jesse did his best to located wildlife for us. We saw an eagle up in the trees. But no bears. We docked later where Amanda guided us to a recreated fish camp that the indigenous people would have used during salmon season. Then we walked over to a recreated trapper's camp where we were able to examine the various tanned animal skins including a bear and a wolf. Pro tip: wear comfortable closed toe shoes as you'll be walking on a dirt trail for 1/4 mile. Amanda brought a 12 gauge shotgun with us in the event of a bear encounter. Luckily she didn't have to use it. No we didn't see Denali as it was a cloudy day. We had a great time learning about salmon fishing and fur trapping.

If you are extremely lucky, you get a peak at Denali at a platform during the adventure. The activity itself is SUPER FUN! We loved zipping through the forest and over a lake- it was stunning!! The guides were truly amazing. They made you feel so safe and comfortable, while really making sure everyone themselves. They were very funny and always smiling. Great operation. However, their excellent instructors give clear, simple instructions that are reinforced throughout your 2 and a half hour journey through the canopy. Safety is clearly their priority- they were were confident, professional and kind. It was cloudy the day we went so we could only see the foothills of Denali, but it was still gorgeous. There we tons of songbirds seranading us in the trees. The last two zips near the lake were my favorite. Simply beautiful. Also really enjoyed the rappel. We are already planning our next ziplining adventure with their sister company in Seward which apparently includes 3 rappels.

A Breathtaking Experience Ruined by the Owner's Appalling Behaviour…read more Denali and the glacier landing were absolutely magnificent. The scenery was breathtaking, and the flight itself should have been one of the highlights of my visit to Alaska. Unfortunately, our guide and pilot, Paul -- who, as I understand it, is also the owner of the business -- turned it into an extremely unpleasant experience. Throughout the trip, Paul was consistently rude, dismissive and thoroughly unprofessional. While the other six passengers were boarding the aircraft one by one, I politely asked whether I could use those couple of minutes to take a photograph. Each passenger needed roughly 30 seconds to board, so my request would not have delayed the group at all. Nevertheless, Paul abruptly refused, without offering any reasonable explanation or showing even basic courtesy. His hostile attitude continued throughout the experience. When we returned, I calmly asked him why he had been so rude to me. His response was that it was "my problem". Even more shockingly, while I was standing by reception and had neither threatened nor insulted him, he physically pushed me. I found this behaviour completely unacceptable. I have travelled to 52 countries and 27 American states, and I have rarely encountered such disrespectful treatment in the tourism industry. A paying guest should never be spoken to or treated in this manner -- particularly by the owner of the company. The natural experience itself is extraordinary: Denali is spectacular, the mountains are unforgettable, and landing on the glacier is genuinely special. However, I strongly recommend requesting any pilot or guide other than Paul. Alaska deserves to be experienced with wonder and excitement, not spoiled by hostility and humiliation. Beautiful destination. Unforgettable scenery. Absolutely appalling customer service from Paul.

One of my favorite experiences in Alaska was kayaking with Denali Southside River Guides at Byers…read morelake. I booked about a week out for the 9:15 am guided kayak trip, which is listed at 2-3 hours on the lake. It was easy to book and a convenient stop on my drive, leaving Denali and heading south for the rest of my trip. The lake is about an hour and 20 minutes south of the national park but has its own charm in Denali state park. Southside River Guides had a tent and set up near the boat launch area and provided everything we needed for your paddle, including waterproof shoes and pants. It was cold on the lake, so they even offered extra jackets if you needed one. Fortunately it didn't rain but you did have to step in the lake to get in the kayak, making their gear come in extra handy. The lake was quiet and peaceful -a nice change from the crowds at the national park. We got to see lots of water birds and salmon! Since it was so cloudy, no Denali views, but on a clear day you might get lucky. Brian was our guide and it was interesting to hear him talk about the animal and plant life around the lake and his experiences in Alaska. The staff was very caring and professional. Highly recommend them for a low key, nature oriented adventure.

Words do not exist for me to explain how awesome our guide Cadia was. Her love and devotion to nature was something to behold. She was almost evangelical in her zeal for the outdoors. We were so fortunate to have Cadia as our guide for a Byers Lake Nature Walk. Every minute in her company was pure joy as we pulled off to the side of the road to see a majestic moose, learned about the edible berries and leaves around the lake, and learned about and listened to the cries of the loon among other gems. Cadia gave our tour some added value by taking us to a few Denali Mountain viewing platforms. She was one of the very best tour guides I have ever had.

I rented snow shoes from True North for a last minute hike in early December. I was given this…read morereferral by our cabin owner, and I was blown away by the customer service. Not only did the owner deliver the snow shoes to my cabin, but he also threw in some complimentary bear spray because he could tell how nervous I was about encountering wildlife. When I wanted to add another pair of rentals for my husband the following day, he drove his van full of kids to meet me off the highway to deliver them with the threat of a big snow storm closing in fast. We were able to leave the rentals in our cabin upon checkout, and he picked them up for us. Incredible convenient. I can't recommend this company and the sweet owner enough!
