    Wifey with her fist catch!

My wife and I had a blast. Unfortunately, we only caught 2 Kings on the day, but it was still great. Scott was our captain and he was great. We would definitely go back, but just maybe in August when the season is best. Cheers!

Even though I did not catch a fish, Dawson our guide tried a variety of setups to help me hook one. Everyone else in the group was catching and releasing them. The time of the season we went there were only chums, not really good for eating. They do put up a decent fight. Overall the equipment was good, the guides knowledgeable and helpful. I wouldn't do it again but I would recommend them.

Good trip, but average and on par with any other fishing charter. Good for people not familiar with fishing.

You'll learn so much from the many different mountain ranges, to the glacial flour that makes the lakes a milky color, to flying over animal tracks with the hopes to find its owner. He has deep knowledge of the Alaskan things, and all the different ways to hike a mountain and how to get there. He's knowledgeable on all the lakes and rivers, where to fish, where to stay, and how he can safely get you there. He's a phenomenal pilot who's very aware of his surroundings and his airplane is absolutely well managed and cared for. I can't wait to come back and fly with David again!

We booked a tour for Tuesday but the weather was bad. He made multiple attempts to contact us the day before to reschedule but we were in the middle of the national park with no reception. He called us again early on Tuesday morning and informed us that we might have to cancel the flight. He would transfer back the deposit immediately (Zero hassle). He also offered to reschedule on Wednesday. Lucky we could rearrange other plan to fly with him on Wednesday. Oh man, this was the NICEST experience in Alaska so far (we did zip line, boat tour, bus tour). It's worth every penny and every minute. This is the best way to see Alaska.

I booked about a week out for the 9:15 am guided kayak trip, which is listed at 2-3 hours on the lake. It was easy to book and a convenient stop on my drive, leaving Denali and heading south for the rest of my trip. The lake is about an hour and 20 minutes south of the national park but has its own charm in Denali state park. Southside River Guides had a tent and set up near the boat launch area and provided everything we needed for your paddle, including waterproof shoes and pants. It was cold on the lake, so they even offered extra jackets if you needed one. Fortunately it didn't rain but you did have to step in the lake to get in the kayak, making their gear come in extra handy. The lake was quiet and peaceful -a nice change from the crowds at the national park. We got to see lots of water birds and salmon! Since it was so cloudy, no Denali views, but on a clear day you might get lucky. Brian was our guide and it was interesting to hear him talk about the animal and plant life around the lake and his experiences in Alaska. The staff was very caring and professional. Highly recommend them for a low key, nature oriented adventure.

They explained in easy-to-understand terms (for us novices) how to make the kayaks do what we wanted. The two guides that went out on the water with us were incredibly knowledgeable about the land and water, the plant-life, and the animals we could see and hear around us. Their relaxed and unhurried manner kept me from realizing until the end that they had taken us all the way around Byers Lake!! Kudos y'all!

The aircraft is a piston powered beaver and not as capable as the turboprop aircraft of other tour companies, so if you want to land on a glacier, go elsewhere. I called early in the morning and let it be known that I wanted a flight on one of two days, time didn't matter. I was contacted a couple of hours later to let me know I could join three others on a flight at 4 pm. Yay! The ground crew (sorry didn't get names) were very helpful and supplied dark sunglasses and overshoes (the glacier landing was a bit mushy for my tennis shoes). Chris gave a great safety briefing and we were off. They don't fly if the weather is hiding all of the mountains and glaciers. We had some clouds, which I think added some mystery to the sights. The small Beaver plane had room for 5 plus the pilot (you got to let him com) but ther were only 4. I got the back seat so I could see out both sides. The plane was clean and the flight was generally smooth. The pictures just can't do justice to the amazing views and the scale of the mountains and glaciers.

When he billed us, we understood why. Other than booking the chopper and coming on the trip himself and perhaps baiting a couple of hooks, he provided zero services. No food, no drinks, nothing. The guides from our camp came along with us at our cost and provided most of the services. The trip started around 8 am and was over by 2 or 3. We expected to pay him a guide fee and cover the cost of the chopper's hourly rate. Total flight time was 7.3 hours, which I verified with the pilot. In the end, when Dave sent the bill, he charged a guide fee of $1,100 and then padded the chopper bill by almost two flight hours to 9.2 hours. Chopper rate was $725/hour. Challenged about this billing, Dave flew into a rage and said that his guide rate was, in fact, $295/person/day ($3,245 for our group, most of whom had literally not even seen him that day or gotten an iota of service from him) plus the flight time, and he would be happy to change the bill to reflect that rate instead of padding the hours, which he said had only done to "save on taxes." I'm not making this up - all of this was in writing, so it's no exaggeration. Bottom line: if you do anything with Dave Fish Alaska, hold your wallet. You're dealing with a dishonest guy who will fleece you if he can.

My…read moreboyfriend and I had Todd and his sweet dog, Bandit, all to ourselves and we were one of the first ones on the river this morning! While the spot is a popular spot, it was teaming with salmon and plenty for all! Todd literally caught a fish on his first cast (he was giving a quick tutorial). My boyfriend and I caught and released about 20 chum and pink "humpy" salmons and still caught our quota of silver (coho) salmon. (In AK you can only keep 3). We only reserved him for a half day, which was plenty for us given the unlucky weather. Todd was super helpful and had all of the gear we would need, including waders, printed our fishing licenses for us, had multiple rods ready to use, had fly fishing rods (which we didn't try, but he was using them) and took care of all our netting, and filleting our fish. You could tell he really knows his stuff and that the other outfitters were a little jealous of all the fish we were catching. Apparently it all has to do with the "rig" we were using (aka the hook, tackle, set-up of the rod). He then gave us the number of a really nice lady, Crystal, who doesn't normally work on Sundays, but met us anyways to help process and ship our fish home. (I will review once we get home and reunited with our fish.) Overall, our experience was great and exactly what we came to AK for. When you're out with a guide for several hours, personality is important. I was worried that our guide might be a grouchy local snob (since we are from SD and clearly tourists) or overly cheesy (which we were a little sick of after being on a cruise ship). Todd is the guy that lives here, owns and operates his own business, and clearly takes pride and care in guiding others in what he does very well. We caught a ton of fish and had a great time :) Thanks again, Todd.
