"There's a beautiful full moon rising Above the mansion on…read morethe hill" (Bruce Springsteen -Mansion on the Hill) We went to a wedding at this mansion on a hill yesterday, and walked away pretty darned impressed. The mansion is a 12,500 square foot Italian Villa built back in 1907. Some of the features include a beautiful back lawn and semi-covered patio, a big room that hosted the wedding ceremony, and later on the DJ station and dance floor, and a very large and elegant dining room for our plated dinner. After the wedding reception. A cocktail hour was held outdoors on the patio. There was a full bar on the left side, and trays of hot and cold appetizers on the right side. I especially enjoyed the meatballs, bruschetta, and stuffed mushrooms. The outdoor component of the wedding was quite lovely -lots of scenic greenery, some opulent classically themed statues, seating on the patio, and an outdoor bar. Dinner was served in the big dining room for about 150 guests. We started off with big fluffy rolls and a nice strawberry, tomato, and goat cheese salad. Next up was the pasta course of mushroom ravioli and ziti with tomato sauce. The meal was three entrees (chicken, beef, and eggplant rollatini) and roast vegetables. The chicken was great -very moist and tender, and the eggplant was simply delicious. We really enjoyed our experience here, and the only quibble we had involved the huge portable vents that ran from the outdoor AC equipment into the room where the ceremony was held. They blew a tsunami of arctic air into the back of the room that was so cold, people literally relocated their chairs away from the frigid blast.

Spring rolls with chili sauce, yum, potstickers, delish. The cheese display was thoughtful with little tags to identify the cheeses. I appreciated the bar selection and the generous pours. The sit down portion of the meal was a bit disappointing being they pre set the salad course, warm salad, not my thing. For my entree I had the sliced sirloin with roasted tomatoes and mashed potatoes. The flavor was good but it was served tepid. I can imagine how hard it is to pull off perfect food for 300+ attendees. I took note of the direction of the manager to the service staff, he knew what he was doing. Overall this caterer left me with a positive impression.

The "powder room" is spacious, well-stocked (like anything you could need was there!), and could be used by folks of all genders. I think it's supposed to be for women, but it doesn't have any gendered signage. There's a "gentlemen" bathroom around the corner though. The venue is gorgeous and cozy. There are so many spaces to it! You could definitely have a flow that works for whatever you're looking to do. The columns in the ballroom are a little off-putting, though, in that it can be hard for guests to see the dance floor and kind of puts you in your place as far as your relation to the couple. This was a winter wedding, but we were surprised that the wedding could have been anywhere in terms of awareness that we were on a lake. I would have thought some more lighting or an outdoor area (though I did see from pictures on here that there is a fire pit in area?). Staff were attentive, but definitely a little pushy at the end. I work catering and you don't pick up chairs or clear linens until everyone has (or most people have) left, but they were already starting to break down at 9:30 on the dot and it made us a little uncomfortable as we were trying to finish up conversations. Plenty of parking and it sounded like the bride and groom suites were well-appointed. At only 25 minutes from downtown Albany, your guests have plenty of options for where to stay!

But being there was another story. As other reviewers have said, they do an amazing job making this space feel warm and inviting (as an old person I was thankful for the complementary ear-plugs). The staff were all super friendly and I was appreciative seeing they have security even for a low-key jam-band-friendly venue. The show itself was a lot of fun, there was plenty of room for the crowd of about 75-100 to relax, dance, sit and watch etc. The sound was really good, and the lights rivaled much fancier venues I've been to. As others have said, the drinks are a bit on the pricey side, but when you compare it to going to a show at say, SPAC these days it was actually a few bucks cheaper per-drink. We started the night at The Eleven, the bar attached to the venue which was also very nice. My girlfriend had one of their signature cocktails, the coffee based one (can't remember the name) and I tasted it and thought it was great. I was a bit disappointed by their whiskey selection, but they had the basics which worked fine. Overall, we had an amazing time and I will definitely be going back to check out more live music here.

This is a review of only the cocktail lounge. Friends from out of town were staying in the…read morecarriage house behind the hotel and we agreed to gather in the lounge for a drink or two. The building itself is impressive, although maybe not quite as impressive as the castle-looking building next door. Our party of seven settled in at the bar as there otherwise did not seem to be a large enough table for all of us to gather around in either the main lounge area or a small room off to the side. The dark wood paneled walls, large fireplace, assortment of easy chairs, couches, and high desktop table gave off a feeling of warmth and welcoming. The friendly bartender introduced herself (sorry I've forgotten her name) and informed us that spirit-wise, the bar was capable of preparing the standard, traditional drinks like Manhattans, martinis, etc. All beers were poured from cans, and at my request, she recited the names of about six that were available. I don't believe anyone in our party inquired about the wines that were available. The building simply calls out for an explanation of its history. Upon our request, the bartender offered to provide either the "brief" or "full" option. We requested the full history. She was obviously well up to the task. You would be amazed at the variety of things you could learn here. Just to touch on a few key topics that were mentioned, consider Alexander Hamilton's wife, puffed rice, Bab-o cleanser (cue up the jingle), Bishop Gibbons, and an orthopedic surgeon. I don't know what the normal food arrangements are in the Lounge. I'm guessing that our out-of-town hosts requested some snacks for us as a few bowls appeared with mixed nuts, crackers and cheese, fresh grapes, humus, and warm pretzel/croissant rolls, and a plate of prosciutto wrapped cream cheese. Overall, the atmosphere here is simply friendly and inviting. I think it will become an occasional gathering place for our local friends when looking for a place that is quiet and relaxing.
