Today's my birthday and early this morning, I realized that I didn't order a cake. I decided on my way home from the beach (a birthday tradition), I would find a bakery from which to get a cake. I found 2 online - one, I learned as I arrived at the address, was "By appointment only" and another was closed for their summer break. Thankfully, I found Chris and Chris at Take The Cake! I couldn't decide between two options so I got 2 cakes! I selected a chocolate on chocolate cake and a chocolate cake with raspberry buttercream frosting. They were delicious!! They are also beautiful and when I told Chris that they were for my birthday, he decorated them with flowers. They are about 40 min from my home but I will keep them in mind for the future! Back in 2017, I would have given this place 5 stars. I am giving it 3 stars because they WERE amazing...but what happened today is baffling. My mom and I drove over an hour to Take the Cake in Guilford to pick up a cake for a dear friend's birthday. I placed the order over a week ago and confirmed on Wednesday that I would be here after 10:00am today. We arrived at 10:30am and no one was here. We waited for almost an hour and watched as other customers came and went, including a woman who had placed an order to be picked up, and the owner had said she would be there by 10:00am. I called 12 times and sent messages on Facebook and Instagram...no response. This is very inconsiderate to your customers, Take the Cake...and it breaks my heart because you have been my favorite bakery since my wedding in April 2017...and you made an unforgettable cake. So I went into this business to order a cake to pick up for the weekend. What I asked for was a small cake with a dog on it a greyhound the exact they had my phone number they had forms of contact. I said if it's possible right happy birthday on it, but the dog was what I really wanted. I wanted a greyhound that could've been easily done with butter, cream, frosting or fondant whatever doesn't make a difference when I show up to pick up the cake it said happy birthday with real flowers on it not edible flowers real ones no dog I paid for the cake gave the cake away to a business down the street and made my own. I want to support small businesses and I believe in second chances but three strikes and your out. I went into the bakery to place my order 2 weeks in advance because last year it wasn't ready at the agreed upon time and the order was incorrect. When I came to pick up my cookie order only 12 of the 42 were ready. The clerk got Gina who pulled my order and apologized and said she didn't get them done. When I reminded her that she took my order she said she has been really sick. I was unable to come back that day but said I would at 11:00 the following day Christmas Eve. I arrive and Gina presents the box and starts to ring them up. I interrupt her and ask where the rest of them are and she stated I said to make 18. This was true but I also ordered two other types. I even reminded her the day before that we reviewed the order. Once again her excuse was she has been very sick. When I asked why she didn't delegate it to her staff she said she couldn't because they have been sick as well . She offered to pick the cookies out of the pre-made trays but I was so aggravated with the laissez-faire attitude, I just wanted to leave. I told her it was very poor customer service and that I wouldn't be back and suggested next time she contact her customers and inform them that their orders may not be fulfilled in time for the holiday. After sharing this story with my friend I was informed that Nancy Purcell no longer is a part of take the cake and everything made sense. I went down the street to Mariano's Bake Shoppe and was pleasantly surprised with the assortment available. I'm looking forward to doing business with them in the future. read more

Used this bakery for our wedding cake as a recommendation from a family member . Probably should have done a lot more research before deciding to go with them. Especially for such an important day! The communication with the owner Gina was horrible. On top of that, I requested the wedding cake be ready for pickup at 10am. She asked if 10:30am would be okay. I agreed even though it was cutting things very close for a wedding with a tight schedule. My father showed up to the bakery to pick it up at 10:30am like agreed upon .. and of course the cake was not ready. Gina told him she thought it was 11am they agreed on. False . As if it couldn't get any worse , She proceeded to place her own flowers on the cake when I specifically stated I wanted a NAKED cake and my florist who I paid thousands of dollars for was going to place flowers that matched my wedding theme. When I saw the cake I had to have the venue rush to scrape off the flowers and replace them with the ones provided by the florist. BUT WAIT .. there's more ! My now husband and I cut into our cake in front of over 100 guests , a videographer and photographer to see that the carrot cake we ordered is 90% Vanilla cake . We chose this bakery for the taste of the carrot cake and thats it .. and we get ripped off with this bullshit of a cake. To say I was disappointed is an understatement. Cannot believe this place is still in business with how poorly it is run. You would think something as serious as a wedding cake would be done with precision and clear communication. I've been coming here for years, left positive reviews before (Under Brutus lol) Loved the carrot cake. I've never had a bad experience until today. I called beforehand and asked about cake slices. They always used to have several different flavors available which was great. I'd always leave with three or so. Unfortunately today they had none and two flavors of cake. I needed cake for a work function so I came 1/2 hour later to pick it up. When I pulled up I saw two people walk inside the bakery which was a nice relief because they've been doing window service since Covid started. I walked up to the door and a women met me there just about pushing the door in my face saying "Hi we'll take your order at the window." I hate this window system. I'm completely understanding with being safe during these unsafe times, but no one was wearing masks inside the bakery. There's desserts right next to the window open and uncovered for all sorts of germs/droplets to touch. And, the other two people who were still clearly standing inside of the bakery before me. Also there's no menu. You stand at this window and awkwardly bending down to look at a person who you feel as though you've already inconvenienced enough showing up to their bakery to purchase their goods. They ramble off several things as though you're supposed to know all the fillings of each cake they just told you. I ask for a small raspberry cake and once it's packaged up discover the prices have increased to $32 for a small cake. Two stars still only because I still really love the carrot cake. All of the choices will have you a little overwhelmed. Everything looks so good, but looks and taste are two different things. I opted for a slice of the lemon coconut cake to go. It was ok, but didn't taste fresh, and something was just a little weird with the flavor. Now looking back, I realize that you can't have so many choices of cake and have them all baked fresh daily. I liked that they seemed clean and you can openly see the bakers working, but I doubt that I'll go back. To get my support, You only have 1 chance when it comes to baked goods. This last visit was not that in any way. I called to order my husband a birthday cake from there normal menu, the Grandmas Peanut Butter. It took me a few tries to get anyone to answer the phone, the hours posted online and on FB are no longer true. Then when I arrived on my pickup day/time they didn't have my order ready and proceeded to get a cake from the freezer out to frost and asked again what I wanted it to say, when the week before I had a conversation and placed an order for exactly this. They had me wait in my car as the storefront still isn't open due to Covid and they have a walk up window. Just terrible. This place used to have delicious cakes back in the day but not anymore. Went in Saturday afternoon about 3:00. They had a half dozen cakes in the case and a couple of pecan crumb cakes. We bought a small cake $32.00 and a coffee cake $14.00. We cut 6 slices, one for each guest, and all 6 people took one bite and that was it. Dry, stale and tasteless were the three words we could use to describe it. In the garbage the went the 6 slices and the rest of the cake. Brought the coffee cake to my moms house and cut one piece, it was also dry and stale tasting. No way these were baked that day or even the day before. They had to be frozen and thawed out earlier in week. Never again will we be back. $50.00 in the garbage and so so many other places we could get great cakes. This place hd a good run while they were the go to place for cakes but no more. read more

Yesterday morning (Saturday) I went to Take the Cake to pick up a carrot cake that I had ordered on Wednesday for my wife's Birthday. No cake, no record of me placing the order. After being not-so-subtly accused by the "baker" behind the counter that it must be my fault (did you call or order in person, did you have the right date?), I showed her my iPhone to prove I called on Wednesday. She did not offer to make me a new one, just offered me one of the cakes on display. While I was calling my wife to find out if she liked any of the alternatives, the same person was explaining to the customer after me that they ran out of the kind of frosting she ordered and would she like an alternative? While they were arguing over that, my wife declined any other pre-made cake they had, so I just walked out. I wish I had read the reviews of this place before I ordered, unfortunately this is not an unusual occurrence, at least not in the last year or so. We have ordered many cakes from them in the past with no problems. These days it's a gamble, either a great cake, no cake, or something in between. I have used Take the Cake for many occasions and was never disappointed. The birthday cake I ordered today was a supreme disappointment. Evidently this bakery doesn't do well with special orders. My request was a vanilla cake with raspberry filling and butter cream frosting. When I went to pick it up, the sales girl knew instantly that my request was mixed up. Instead of raspberry filling, the raspberry was added to the frosting. Since this bakery boasts that no artificial coloring is ever used, the combination of the buttercream with raspberry created a rather sickening flesh color look to the cake. The sales lady did offer another cake but my friend requested raspberry so I accepted the cake with a $5 discount. If the color wasn't enough disappointment, the cake was dry and the frosting was tough and hard despite being taken out of the fridge an hour earlier. I don't believe that the cake was baked fresh. For $27.00, I have had better cakes at Stop & Shop! I will not return to this bakery. read more

Absolutely horrible customer service. I ordered an expensive cake for my daughter which they spelt the name incorrectly. It is also not what I asked for. I asked for white buttercream and the cake is yellow and brown. It looks like baby poop. When I told them this they asked me to come back to fix it when I need the cake for a party today and I don't have childcare to go back. I used to get my birthday cake here every year, only stopping in recent years due to being away at school. ALL of the cakes are delicious, my top three, in-order, being 1. The Lemon Coconut cake 2. The Chocolate Mousse cake 3. The Blueberry cake If you don't want a whole cake, they also sell cookies and chocolate mousse cupcakes which are pretty great. The top frosting is a chunk of chocolate more or less and the inside is filled with a white cream center. Not sure if they still do this, but the business also used to make everything fresh that day, donating any leftovers to the homeless shelter/ food kitchen every week. The folks in front of me bought three for a triplets birthday party but when they asked to have them inscribed with names, they were told the person who writes them wasn't available and they feared messing it up. They didn't have paper menus you could take to place phone orders -- they told me to look them up online They did have a plate of cut up cake samples one of which I tried. Supposedly strawberry shortcake, but no strawberries or even red jam in evidence, just rock hard cake with unpleasantly greasy buttercream icing (which I don't think contained butter). It was so bad I threw it away after a teensy bite (this cake was so ancient you'd need a serrated knife to cut it). Pretty disappointing, considering this bakery's previous reputation for excellence. read more

The woman on the other end of the phone took all the details requested for this cake, and told me it would not be a problem to create it. Unfortunately, upon delivery there were some "snafus" with the specs and the writing/salutation on the cake, BUT I have to say, the cake was phenomenal...REALLY delicious and well crafted... My only negative is that I wish more attention was paid to the specific requests (that were promised by the bakery) and to the writing/salutation that was supposed to be on the cake. read more

What a hot was a white cake with black writing and trim that looked like it was for a funeral. The filling was buttercream that was as hard as a rock with not one strawberry or banana in sight. I really wanted to like the items I purchased at Take The Cake. I bought chocolate biscotti with pistachios and a carrot cake. Neither my daughter nor I liked the biscotti. It was thick and soft and had a strange taste - not very chocolatey, but that could be a matter of preference on my part. I was more disappointed in the cake. The cake itself was OK, nothing special, but the frosting was terrible! It tasted like they used shortening instead of butter and there seemed to be no vanilla in it. I don't know if it was supposed to be cream cheese frosting, but if so, it wasn't anything like that. It was fluffy (not creamy) and had no flavor. I was extremely disappointed with this custom birthday cake. It was for a child's birthday and the artwork appeared rushed and was not attractive at all. I asked for a cake to serve 20-25 people. When I arrived I picked up one decorated cake and another "cutting" cake which was just a plain frosted cake. That was not the plan. I wanted ONE cake - and one that was brightly decorated and in line with the theme requested. If a cutting cake was the plan, I'd have ordered a smaller cake or a sheet cake. Also, I knew that the cake would not look exactly like the photos I shared, but when I say ugly and rushed, I mean it. Lastly, the Happy Birthday was placed on the outer part/side of the cake which inevitably was messed up in transit - would have been better to place it on top since all you are offered is a flimsy box to take it home (other shops have sturdier cardboard). Why am I so upset? This cake was $100! Outrageous! I knew that when ordering it but heard good things about this bakery so opted against my usual go to (Lucibellos - less expensive and superior in taste). When I picked up the cake and was shown it, I thought to myself, I can decline this atrocity and just not pay for this ugly cake and leave, or I can hope it tastes really good and apologize to my family for how it looks. I try to support small businesses so opted for the latter. Well, it did not taste good. At all. The frosting was oily tasting, the raspberry filling was a tasteless oily buttercream and not how I imagined raspberry filling would be at all, where were the raspberries? The cake was thick but not in a decadent way. The chocolate was not even as good as a grocery store cake - flavorless and not moist. No one ate it. I mean - no one - not the adults or the kids. I had an entire cake and a half left at the end of the party (two entire cakes if you count the discarded pieces) and a heart and wallet full of disappointment.
