For longer stays, prepaying for parking saves a good deal even versus validation. Everything here has been truly wheelchair accessible. There is inconsistent communication between doctors but no worse than most elsewhere. The great doctors make it possible to look beyond the not-so-great ones. Their discharge planning and inpatient social services could use some work. The on site pharmacy for freshly discharged patients helps so much with the transition home.

I am so glad that Mom decided to go with this team. The last surgery she had was a relatively rare one, and it went extremely well. From the patient point of view, the rooms are nice and large. My dad stayed for several nights next to Mom, and slept in relative comfort on the couch. The support staff provided him with pillows and blankets, and a nurse at one point when I was there saw that he was sleeping in an uncomfortable position, and adjusted his pillow while he slept to alleviate the issue after he finished seeing to Mom. These guys and gals are truly there to help. From a visitor standpoint, the 7th floor waiting room is huge. You can monitor patient progress on a big screen monitor, and the staff alerts you from time to time as well to update. If you're looking for a really excellent hot cocoa, the Sky Cafe there on the 7th floor should not be missed. But for grub, avoid the Sky Cafe and travel down to the cafe on the 2nd floor in DCAM. The food there is quite good...and, if you can believe it, pretty reasonable.

If you don't order from the general menu, the kitchen will automatically send you Amy's brand frozen gluten free entrees that I personally don't like at all. I arrived at 5:30 AM and met with the research assistants and the nurse that would be dealing with me, Colleen. She was professional and supportive. The room was small and clean, with a tv and comfy chair. I got breakfast at 9:30 and it was ok. Everyone was helpful and friendly. I have stingy veins, so there were multiple attempts at finding one that would work. They were apologetic and I took it in stride. The worst was going to the bathroom, having to take the IV stand with me, and 'collecting' the urine for analysis. She reminded me cheerfully and asked if I was ok multiple times. The only glitch was I went to have another test done, so I ordered lunch in advance, but due to a new catering company or something there was a big delay (45 min) because I came back earlier than anticipated. I had planned to have lunch at home and I kind of wish I had done that.

This was after being run through security who treats everyone like criminals. Keep in mind they will confiscate any weapons and keep them (meaning they won't give them back which I'm not even sure how that is legal, especially with firearms.) This is the first hospital I've seen in my 35+ years in Chicago where the security is this aggressive and of course it's one of the only hospitals in a black area. They are 1000% useless clowns masquerading as security as in most cases. The waiting room is also very small so once it gets close to full they send all visitors (non-patients) to the waiting room across the street. Sitting in the waiting room for 10 hours I saw no reason to even be that aggressive. The people were mostly calm and the one or two acting out (just talking and making annoying requests) were doing so due to their own anxiety issues after waiting for hours on end. For instance some woman yelled at the nurses after sitting in the waiting room with her husband for two hours while he was having seizures. During an episode he got up and started stumbling around in confusion at which point he fell on me. She yelled at them for not heeding her warnings. To the staff's credit they immediately jumped into action after hearing her yell at her husband to sit down and tried to restrain him after he fell. They then immediately sent him to the back (where they draw blood, not the ER) to be looked at. The nurses and doctors are cool for the most part. Once you finally get into the ER they are very accommodating and nice (probably because of the wait.) My name Cassandra was amazing. The hospital itself is a bit old and somewhat dirty. Even in the ER they seem to have problems though with the alarm on my machine constantly going off for no reason and one of the network keystone wallplates broken. They at least gave me some snacks after refusing to feed me because I might end up doing some tests even though I hadn't ate or drank in over 24 hours. Surprise surprise those tests weren't needed. Overall I wouldn't recommend this place. You'd think Chicago hospitals would have massive ER departments by now not just because of the violence, but just by how large the city is. To have this large facility have the same size emergency department as a much smaller hospital is ridiculous.

I believe he also has an office in Burr Ridge, IL. I was a patient of Dr. Kraig from about December 2007 thru December 2008 at his Chicago location. Primarily due to the long distance from my home, I only remained a patient for a year and three office visits. I originally sought out Dr. Kraig at that time frame because of his high credentials and having several unsuccessful stints with more local neurologists. I thought if nothing more it would be 'worth a try', and overall, I found Dr. Kraig very good, professional, thinking outside the box, and funny. Before my visit, his office staff made sure that I gather all of my previous records, x-rays, EVERYTHING previous pertaining to my migraine condition and have the copies of the records MAILED to the office over a month BEFORE my visit. They told me that Dr. Kraig requests this of various patients so he can "look over my records well in advance, before my visit". I had no problems with this ethic (actually sounded great to me!), so my family and I gathered all of my previous records and had them mailed to his office. On my first visit to Dr. Kraig - however - when I was in office with him he was glancing over my records on the fly, as if he had no knowledge of them or my previous history. I asked him if he had reviewed all of my stuff, and he told me he hadn't. I told him his office staff had instructed me to mail all of my records WELL IN ADVANCE because he supposedly wanted to examine everything and be up to speed BEFORE my visit. Dr. Kraig didn't deny this policy - but - he simply told me he was looking at my records for the first time now, and thus we spent the better part of an hour in the office going over all of my records, medical history, previous neurologist visits, etc. right then and there. Not a huge deal, but had this been the case, I could have just brought a folder with all of my records in that very day with me rather than go thru the preparation, trouble, and cost of getting everything mailed. Clearly what I was told and what I was instructed to do almost became a moot point - why tell patients to do that?. I liked Dr. Kraig and would recommend him, admittedly my experience with him was just several visits and one year. The "records situation" above was a point off, and the few times I had to reach Dr. Kraig I found him hard to reach, which can be understandable. Overall though, I only recommend if you live CLOSE to the city or his other office location or if you simply will trust nobody else to your neurology needs. In my circumstance, the hour and 20 minute drive (give or take) from the suburbs out to his office - which is well past Comiskey Park, was just very far. I also didn't see magical improvements with my condition and the regiments we tried (one included Depakote, which helped me little but put over 35 pounds on me over the course of about 8 months. He did slowly ween me off of that regiment, though). Overall, both of these facts simply didn't warrant me being a long-time patient. I would still give my experience with Dr. Kraig about a B grade, and would still recommend him.

He had not reviewed the documentation or scans sent to him well in advance of the consult. He did not listen to me or reference my file, as evidenced by the numerous errors in the documentation and notes. I have a copy of his notes from the consult, both the notes given to me during the session and the ones forwarded to my other medical professionals-they contradict each other. Due to the many errors in the ones sent to the other professionals, my personal notes taken during the meeting were taken as legitimate for the time being and I requested to be referred to someone else. I would never see him or trust him again and suggest anyone who visits to bring trusted others into the room so he perhaps he will not be such a royally unprofessional jerk. I give him a straight F grade.

The surgeon I have is such a d head. But he's good. His office is a mess though. Like worst communication ever. But my surgery day experience was good. The ER is your typical urban ER. Overcrowded with overworked staff. First ER via ambulance I was brought right to a bed in a hallway. Anyway despite waiting an almost hour screaming in pain before they dealt with slow AF shift change was I finally taken care of. CT scan done. They had to try placing my NG tube because they didn't get it right the first time. Cognizant placement of this tube is torture. So having it done twice - ugh. Having a blockage in the ER sucks. Meeting trauma team was fine once they finally came. So then there's my emergency surgery experience which was actually pretty smooth compared to my ER experience. You get your own private room at the hospital which is great. Had a great care team but I pretty much came back to the hospital (again after a magic carpet ride). They tell you once you are discharged to call this certain number if you have issues. It's hard to wait for a call back when you are screaming in pain again. So they were annoyed I came back "without calling". Anyway my second ambulance ride sent me to the waiting room. It's a lot of fun to sit in a wheelchair in pain in a cold waiting room. Then I was put in my own room once brought back instead of a hallway. In room most of day until they admitted me. Second stay was fine. Hospital food here isn't the worst. I really like my outpatient experience. I am in the resident clinic for my primary care and I like my baby doctor. I feel like my doctors are better listeners here than my previous hospital in Boston. I have an interesting medical history so I appreciate this. I'm glad we don't drive. Parking looks painful. My sister and husband enjoy the sky lobby space. The staff are relatively kind here. Not my worst hospital experience.
