A wonderful magic show inside the Grand Sierra Hotel & Casino…read more I was looking for something to do without leaving the hotel for a major conference. I saw that they were advertising this show...and I like a good magic show. It did not disappoint. The sleight of hand and on-stage demonstrations were incredible. I was still banging my head of how they did it or maybe it was the cocktail at the bar that was playing tricks on my mind. As a guest of the hotel, I had a 20% coupon and promptly used it at the ticket office, though I think I should have picked my seat better. Nonetheless, I was in the second row and I was able to get a good look of the magic up close. If you arrive early, you can hang out for Happy Hour, they had some unique drinks including the local standby beers and cocktails...and mocktails for those attending the all-ages show. I recommend seeing this show on a Friday or Saturday night if you want a bit more rambunctious, racy show.

After happy hour ended a bud light and high noon was $18. I can't believe they turned the old movie theater into a magic show theater. I sat there thinking about all the movies I saw at the Hotel and the first time I had a drink in a movie theater so long ago, 1989. It was fun in the bar prior to the doors opening they have a magical experience for adults and kids to set the mood for the evening. Tracy the bartender was awesome! She also works at Blitz during the day. She has the kindest soul and such a people person! It was like I had known her for years. They have a box office where you can purchase tickets. Very hard to hear the gal! They definitely need a microphone to speak to each other. If you think you're going to save a few extra dollars on those service fees - you may have to think twice, just purchase on line. It's much easier. Also, they have a snack bar with fresh popped popcorn $9 -$13 and huge pretzels $14. Chase Hasty and his wife have traveled around the world to over 25 countries sharing their magical talent and ballet dancing skills. My favorite part of the show was when Chase brought out a locked box and Hoisted the box with a rope up to the ceiling and told this guy to watch the box. Later in the show they opened the box, it was a pretty impressive trick!!! One not to be forgotten!! It's a small production but well thought out with couple extra dancers and costumes changes. I love that Chase, picks people out of the audience to help with the show. Maddox was a return kid that had been practicing his magic and Chase let him perform in front of the audience and what is that called "That's Magic!!!" It's nice the performers will met you afterwards in the hallway to have pictures and ask questions. It's a great family night or you can come to the later show at 9pm for a little more risky nocturnal show. I'll have to save that one for another time!

If you think the only dancers that we have in Reno are of the pole variety, then think again…read more Northern Nevada is home to A.V.A. Ballet Theatre, a really good, professional ballet company. I have had numerous opportunities to see this company both in rural venues and in Reno. The latest performance was at the Robert Z. Hawkins Amphitheater during ArtTown. This most recent performance I attennded was "Vortex" a ballet that incorporates modern, jazz and classical dance with popular music. From Metallica to Rihanna to Bill Cont to Lady GaGa to Beatles to Britney Spears and back to Metallica - the entire show was a feast to eyes and ears. The costumes were fantastic, the dancing superb, and the lighting and sets, for the most part, were supportive of the whole production. It was innovative and entertaining and professionally executed. The guest artists, Kathleen Martin and John Frazer from the Idaho Ballet, were stunning. I am looking forward to their upcoming productions.

I'll start with the positives: The pioneer is a lovely facility and it was quite nice having the philharmonic playing, for a discounted rate on the ticket I would have just come to see them to be honest. The men who played the stepsisters were arguably the best part. Threw themselves into the roles even doing some substantial dancing in heels at one point which was impressive. All of the sets were very nice for the production. Neutral things: Some of the costumes were beautiful, but some looked like they came from the thrift store and were just bedazzled. Nice smoke effects at times, and it was neat to see fairy godmother fly. However, Other than these few exceptions no significant lighting or effects were used. Surely the pioneer center can do more lighting to help set moods? Negatives: I thought I came to a ballet, so why did it take over half an hour before the first pair of pointe shoes? (Yes I was checking my watch, that's how engaging the "choreography" was in the first part of the show). Soloists were mostly okay, but the corps were often a mess. They looked uncomfortable to the point that I felt bad for them. Cinderella was decent, but I can't say more than that because she didn't have a lot of actual dancing to do until midway into the second act. I would have loved to have seen more from her to really appreciate her talents. The Prince was a major disappointment, it looked like he was phoning it in the entire time. No passion, no effort, nothing especially impressive. The partner work between the principles looked uncomfortable like they had just met a few days before. Overall I felt like this missed the mark. It felt thrown together and phoned in like they knew that people would come no matter what kind of show was put on. They could have used another month to make a decent show. The only time my heart raced was when I was afraid for people doing things they didn't seem ready to do on stage. I noticed a significant number of people didn't return for act 2 which is sad for the arts in northern Nevada. This won't be my last time going to an AVA production, but if the next show isn't a step up in quality or a step down in price then that one will likely be the last.

The process to book online was fairly simple and it's convenient to choose the seats too. The Pioneer inside is clean and everyone is friendly. What a great place for live shows! Given the age of this building, they have done a spectacular job with the upkeep. The building still seems new and the interior is clean and updated. The seats are very comfortable and the traffic patterns are well thought out, even on a busy show day. They have concession stands available on both floors- spreading out traffic and easing the lines/crowds. Prices are reasonable for a live events venue. The show itself was great, and the venue is clearly well designed with great acoustics and great views from every seat in mind. The technical features available at the venue also seem to be pretty high tech and modern- at least they were for the Paw Patrol show. I was especially impressed with the restrooms. Sparkling clean with so many restrooms available. I can't imagine lines for the restroom ever being an issue here. I regret not having been here for any shows in so long. I am already looking forward to my next visit and have found myself already scouring the website for which shows are coming soon that I'd like to see. Would recommend!

Bell's singing was so beautiful and Geston was hilariously full of himself (how he should be)! All of the performers were so good (and I know a few were High School or younger which is very impressive). Vocals on point, costumes/props perfection, choreography awesome, and we had the best time. I can't imagine how much time it takes to put something like this together... the talent! I'm exited to see what other plays they will be doing down the road. The group did an incredible job in their presentation of this 1950's Broadway hit. Gamblers, gangsters, show girls and missionaries all collide in this comedic musical. The entire ensemble seemed perfectly casted. The over 100 costumes propelled you swiftly back to the mobster era of the late 20's. All the voices were strong and on mark. The dance scenes were full of energy. I enjoyed the simple set they created. It allowed for quick scene turnarounds. Performances at the Hawkins Amphitheater are wonderful. Set up on the natural hillside inside Bartley Ranch, you can enjoy outdoor shows in the Nevada evenings. Seating was good, easy line of vision to the stage, as we sat rows 4 and 5 with seats 1,2, & 3. Sound was great through the entire show. Seating was reserved pre sales. I do recommend bringing a cushion. The spacious metal seats can get a hard by the second act. Plenty of on property parking. Bring a flashlight to get back to your car. There are no lot lights. Why don't more residents enjoy our local theater groups. They are so affordable and simply do a fantastic job.
