There are…read morejust such a profusion of simple sushi restaurants in San Francisco and Seattle serving top class fresh fish. Places like Nobu and Roka are of course great but prohibitively expensive for everyday dining. I was therefore intrigued when a friend recommended Maki Yaki to me recently. It had opened on the site of a Korean restaurant close to my house and I hadn't bothered to investigate its menu properly. Well, my search for an affordable SW London equivalent of the small high quality USA sushi restaurant is over. They serve a limited menu which is a good sign. There are some starters divided into cold and warm sections. I had a nice kara age - soft moist chicken deep fried and served with a piquant sweet sauce. I then continued with one of their combination dinners - miso soup and salad served with some of their lovely fish. My selection came with tuna and salmon sashimi and red dragon roll (deep fried prawn wrapped in avocado and tuna). Lovely fresh ingredients and sweetest fish. My only fear is now for my bank balance! There is a mouth-watering array of different rolls to try as well as teriyaki and tempura dishes. I'm also going to bug them to add toro to the menu!

The majority of the menu is dedicated to their sushi roll creations. I've been back twice now because they were so good. The rolls are not very traditional, but more a western take on sushi as the manager is from California. Still delicious and they do the more simple nigiri dishes as well. I would recommend it for a casual meal, it's decently priced and has a quiet atmosphere. You'll walk away full for about £20 and two people can share 3-4 rolls. I definitely will be back when the sushi-mood strikes.

In fact, Surrey as a whole doesn't have a foodie feel, unlike areas west of London like Berkshire, which is full of Michelin starred establishments. So, I was very excited to see Makiyaki's sign over the door of this restaurant site. This had housed Oliver's in the past, one of my favourite restaurants in Epsom which sadly closed. A Japanese restaurant is certainly a novelty in this part of Surrey and they've opened in Epsom's own restaurant row area of South Street.. Makiyaki will however be able to draw on the experience of their established sister restaurant of the same name in south Wimbledon. They've initially opened up just the ground floor, going with a modern theme, complete with jazz music. The menu leans strongly towards sushi with half the menu dominated by a great variety of rolls, all complete with photo. There are cooked options for the squeamish as well as the traditional raw fish. You'll also find Japanese stalwarts on the menu as well as the occasional Asian interloper like Korean bulgogi. My starter of chicken karaage came as about 10 moist bite size bits of chicken in crispy seasoned batter served with sweet chilli dipping sauce. It's easy to dry out this dish but this was an excellent version. For main, I went for the special sashimi set. This started off with a bowl of miso soup and some Japanese salad, which was covered in a moreish dressing. Then, the piece de resistance. A beautifully presented slab on which was placed 3 very generous slices each of salmon, tuna, yellowtail and sea bass as well as 3 slices of California roll. A little hill of gari (pickled ginger to clean your palate between mouthfuls) and wasabi completed the plate. The glistening look and clean smell of the fish revealed its first class sourcing and it was lovely to chew and savour each thick slice. The pricing, as for most Japanese food, isn't cheap but for this quality, it's value for money. The food is also available for takeaway. The presence of a Japanese restaurant in the heart of Surrey brings a big smile to my face. Is Epsom ready for raw fish? I certainly hope so!

We went along on a Thursday night, it was quite quiet, apparently uncharacteristically so according to our waitress. Straight away we received a friendly welcome, and the good service lasted all through our meal. I'm a vegetarian and ordered the vegetable sushi assortment, and a side of fried tofu. When my food arrived, I was amazed at how beautifully presented and fresh everything looked. The food didn't disappoint, it was tasty, fresh and left me feeling the way all good Japanese food does; full and content without feeling bloated or stuffed. My boyfriend had the spicy prawns and mixed sushi, he was blown away by the prawns, which were a special on the day we visited, and also very happy with the sushi. The price isn't super cheap, we paid about £15 per head, but we felt that for the quality of the food and the overall experience, it was more than fair. Will be recommending Oka to all my friends.

So my initial challenge was to find a place to have a nice dinner as I didn't know the area. So a lot may have changed since my visit, but I believe this was a well deserved rating as the ambiance was quiet, and quaint. The service was good and the food was definitely satisfying, as I was craving some Japanese food. If I'm ever in the area again, and craving Japanese food, I'd go back. So enjoy and I hope the quality is just as good as when I was there.

This says more about Maidenhead than it does about Miyazaki. Although the restaurant had mostly empty tables I was offered a table that they'd need within about 80 minutes. "No problem" I thought, along with "where is this crowd they're expecting"? Eighty minutes later and it was obvious they were truthful. This is Maidenhead's "hot" restaurant. With a sushi menu stretching all the way from tuna to salmon and back again (!) it's fair to say that the selection of raw fish here doesn't go deep or extensive. Does Hamachi even make its way to the UK? I never saw it on a menu once. Miyazaki does offer salmon nigiri both raw and lightly torched and that's about as exotic as things get. What they do they do well enough and certainly well enough for the area. If you're in Maidenhead you might as well make a reservation to dine at Miyazaki. It's not the only restaurant in town but I think it might be best one.
