Well, the first review of Miyama. I am surprised as this really is a perfect little haunt tucket away near St. Pauls.
Okay, introductions: Miyama is a Japanese restaurant split in the usual way. There is a teppan-yaki section, a sushi counter and then private rooms downstairs. The restaurant is a little hard to find and rather underwhelming from the outside but I was promised that this was the "Place" for good sushii by a Japanese work colleague.
We went on a Wednesday night, which was fairly quiet and this had the added advantage that during the week from 6pm to 7.30pm is Sushi 'Happy Hour' where all sushi is £1, except for Maki rolls which are £3.
Thus with the price sorted out beforehand we weren't too apprehensive of ordering lots of food. My other favorite Japanese restaurant, 'Donzoko' is very much a different price league than this (higher!).
The sushi bar itself is small, seating perhaps 8 - 10 people maximum. Two chefs during the evening prepared our food for our party that took up nearly all the bar. The menu is reasonably extensive and comprises the more 'standard' Japanese sushi with nice different types like 'sweet prawn' and 'Grilled Salmon'.
All of the sushi was fresh and very good. Of particular quality was the scallop dish which my significant other ate many. Infact in an hour we'd eaten them out of scallop!
Obviously sushi is not to everyone's taste, but rest assured the range and cooking technique is sufficiently large and good to ensure you'll enjoy. Dishes can be supplemented with full price regular menu dish where I'd heartily recommend Nasu Dengaku which is grilled Aubergine with Sweet paste ontop. Really tasty! Also the buttered scallops Miyama style is great.
After a lot of Sushi we retired to a room downstairs had had some Japanese rice wine, a few things of Sake and some Japanese dessert. With some shochu (Red Pirilla - ICHIBAN SHISO) we really enjoyed our day.
Overall, a great restaurant, slightly let down by the interior, but with great service, great food will be sure to come back again soon. Donzoko for now still retains my "Best Japanese" crown, but Miyama wins on price and sushi, so it's very, very close. read more
