Really like this oriental restaurant. Very reasonably priced. Don't be put off by the window display, it's great inside. The sunken seating is fun and interesting! Good food. Can recommend.

The host told me they were all booked up, and gestured to the dining room that they had all booked up. It was half empty so I assumed he was joking, but wanted to appear respectful, in case they had filled up in the 10 minutes it had been since I checked. The conversation then stopped there. Nope. He was serious. Looked online as I was leaving. I could have booked a table for two 10 minutes after I was leaving. They just didn't want us to actually be there. This restaurant is not interested in serving patrons. Don't come here.

So even though it hasn't quite reached Penge, I'm glad there's a sushi pace just up the hill! Instead of ordering sushi in and dealing with it after a 20 minute rest in plastic containers, we decided to pay a visit to the restaurant and have it as fresh as possible. The restaurant is divided into two sections, the first is at the front and has very normal tables and chairs. The second part is up a couple of steps and has tables with sunken seats. It takes a moment to work out how to slide in and sit, but once you are in there, it's very comfy. (just don't drink too much and try to get out again!) The service was brilliant. They really cannot do enough to help and are so sweet and nice to chat to. The decor is very slightly cold, and there weren't too many people in there with us, but it was fine. The food was a bit mixed. The prawn tempura was ok, but the vegetable tempura was really really boring. We didn't finish it and I don't think I would order tempura again from them. The miso soup was lovely, really really nice and I savoured every drop. The sushi and sashimi was great - fresh, delicious and quite perfect. I have also tried their Katsu curry (YUM) and their beef noodle ramen - also yum. Very generous with extremely nice, lean beef and lovely crispy greens.

Unfortunately, before I can get to the actual review of the food, I have to point out that it took about an hour for us to receive anything, and it was clear the kitchen had forgotten our order. That's not a critical failure in my mind, as long as it's properly addressed. However, while the food eventually came after we flagged down multiple waiters, there was never an apology or acknowledgement that they had forgotten. Disappointing. However, the food itself was good. The Udon soup with tempura was tasty, and the tempura was an interesting selection, all perfectly fried. The salmon and avocado hand roll was also tasty, and the fish tasted fresh. The tomago roll was also yummy. The decor is very sleek, with black and blue tones throughout. The restaurant was completely full when we were there on a Saturday night, so you may want to make a reservation. Overall, a decent choice for Japanese in Deptford, and right by the DLR. However, don't be surprised to wait a while for your food.

The service was mediocre; staff were not very attentive. I had chirashi don which had very little fish and toppings compared to what I've had in other Japanese restaurants and also in Japan. A lot of the appetizers were out of stock despite it being a quiet Monday evening with hardly any other customers. Overall inefficient service and poor quality food for a Japanese restaurant.

Legit good Japanese izakaya-style place specializing in okonomiyaki. Overall all the food is solid…read moreif not spectacular but certainly better than you might expect in London. Even though your okonomiyaki options in London are limited, they're still strangely plentiful compared to the USA where the embrace of Japanese food culture is much more codified into life; it's still strange to me that during the last 30 years the Japanese cuisine that took off was sushi instead of ramen and all things izakaya. But here in the UK capital you have Abeno, which is good but takes itself a little too seriously for what is supposed to be the most casual and customer-focused of dishes (the translation is basically "as you want it"), and Jeux Jeux which is solidly meh. Okan sits right inbetween and feels as close as you can get to eating the famous dish in Osaka. I don't want to stretch that comparison too far but squint a bit and suddenly you might imagine for a moment you're eating in the middle of Shinsekai instead of Brixton. You can order your okonomiyaki as western as you like it (take out all that seafood, add the cheese!) and it'll still be just as delicious if you had ordered something closer to the spirit of the "nation's kitchen". Vibe is good, food is good, people are pleasant. Recommended!

I guess such goodness comes from cooking the same item over and over, until it gets to perfection. The okonomiyaki here has a good balance between salty, tart, sweet and savory, without anything too overpowering. The portion is quite generous and well executed. Personally, I found it to be quite authentic Japanese street food. Service is super friendly and attentive, even though it's essentially a food stall. It's easy to tell why this place was able to expand to several different locations in London. Good job!

The Teppanyaki chefs are very talented and put on a real show for you while cooking the food. They also serve Sushi, Sashimi and Yakitori. I am lucky enough to have eaten Japanese food in Tokyo so the bar is set quite high fo me in terms of quality and authenticity. While this restaurant appears to be Chinese run rather than Japanese, the food still tastes authentic and the experience is very worthwhile. The Sake is great too, especially warm. Highly recommended, only loses one star for the prices.

In addition to preparing the food he flourishes his tools, juggles with some of the implements and even (optionally) threw the bowls fried rice to the customers! Somehow everyone I saw trying this managed to catch it, which was a relief. For starters we had Chicken Yakitori (chicken on skewers with leek and yakitori sauce), Harumaki (deep fried Japanese spring rolls) and Prawn Tempura: these varied from £4-5.50 per portion and I'd suggest one or two each as the dishes are small but tasty. We didn't try the Sushi, Makimono, Temaki or Sahimi, although some of the others at the shared table did and it looked nicely presented. For the mains (£10-17) we went with Traditional Teppanyaki: this is the food that the chef prepares in front of you on the hot plate. This is safe, but I don't think it would be a good idea for very young children. We had Tuna filet steak seared and served with teriyaki sauce and chopped pickled ginger; Scottish sirloin Hibachi Steak which was served to order, in our case rare. The steak and teriyaki sauce was lovely, the tuna was very nice but a little overcooked to our tastes. This was accompanied by egg fried rice with chicken at the start (£4.00), fried mushrooms and bean sprouts at the end (included in the cost). Everything was nicely cooked and very tasty. We had a bottle of Australian Merlot, which was good value at under £15. The food was good value, the staff were helpful and polite, and there is a reasonable amount of parking outside. Highly recommended.
