I went by this business last week about the time I would need to pick up my dog (4pm). There was a sign saying "we will be right with you, thank you for your patience". There is a camera bank behind the desk. I waited for a long time and never saw a human or a dog on the camera bank. I heard nothing except one dog whining in an enclosure. Waited and waited. NOTHING. I wish I could put minus stars. We have used this place for years. Looks like owner is selling and it has gone way down hill since. We went to drop off and no one was around except for one customer who was picking up. The customer waiting for 30 minutes went in back and got her own dog. Customer finally found an employee out back because she could not find her other dog. We were boarding 3 dogs for two days. Asked for baths for all and nail trim and one doggy needed a hair cut. We had a 300. credit because we had to cancel the first appointment due to delayed construction at our house. They did not bathe or trim nails on two dogs and groomed one. Worst grooming ever. While we were waiting to pick up, I was in the car when the employee came up hill with two of my dogs. One of my dogs recognized my car and wanted to come my way. The employee jerked by the leash and she yelped as he took her in. The dog they groomed now is traumatized. We asked to see them on camera while they were being boarded. Of course their cameras do not work. I will never ever use them again. If you love your dogs, you won't use them either. Look at reviews of them on BBB.org. Every complaint has a response from them not accepting any responsibility what so ever. I have had nothing but good experiences at Taj Mapaw. I have a very active 9 month old Great Dane. I can tell by his demeanor when going into day care that he is excited to be there and play with other dogs. He comes home happy AND tired, which is exactly what we want. There are no other places in the Roanoke Valley that have an indoor and outdoor area as large as Taj Mapaw. There is even a water pool that dogs can play in on hot days. This is our third dog that we have entrusted to Taj. If you have a dog that needs activity and socialization with other humans and dogs, this is the place to go. Your dog will be much happier than being home alone all day. It is a luxury that has become a necessity for us. read more

My Maltipoo was NOT FEED FOOD from 7:30am - 4:30pm!! when got him home, he drank water until he threw it up!! HORRIBLE!! First time placing my 9lb Maltipoo anywhere for daycare. ( I was nervous but was having surgery). i also asked for grooming. I left explicit written details about his anxiety over being alone and being groomed. i asked for him to be given his blanket for comfort while alone, didn't happen. i called and spoke to John. He said he would find out and and call back. He said my dog was not interested in eating. I do not like to be lied to because his food was NOT opened!! it took my baby 2 days to look a me and act a little normal! HORRIBLE SERVICE and NOT interested in my legitimate concerns!!! I have used this facility for 2 years and have no issues until this last pickup. First issue was they are stating they can't find where I paid. When you book a boarding reservation online there is no option to skip payment! I even got the confirmation page after I paid. The biggest issue was at pick up there was a long line due to limited staff which seemed to frustrate him (understandable). There was a small dog dropped off for grooming that he allegedly bit the worker which sent him into a rage! There was 3 of us there that witnessed the abuse after! Not sure if he kicked the small dog but it yelped and we heard a thump against the wall. He then slammed the door and started his fit yelling and cussing down the hall stating that dog should be put down for what it did. Then aggressively came back at the dog to get it! My 2 dogs have lost a noticeable amount of weight and the one senior dog did not get his medication like he should give me he amount that was sent home. read more

I attempted to drop our dog off today for a week stay. The GPS does not take you to the new location and when I went to the old location and ran into another client we were both baffled by the business being closed. I attempted to call them no less than 5 times over the next hour at the number listed on the website with no answer and no opportunity to leave a message. When I called later today to explain the situation and ask for a refund they could not explain why no one answered the phone. I asked them to refund the charge as we already flagged it for a hold with the credit card company and they refused. The "manager" whom I would expect professionalism from, refused and when I suggested that I would leave an unfavorable review, started taunting me stating again and again "your threats don't bother me one little bit!". He then hung up on me. I was surprised that anyone running a kennel would mock a potential client and hope that others avoid this establishment. Thank you. read more

First time sending my dog to get groomed here. Never again. They only trimmed around her face when she needed trimming all over. Didn't clean her ears like i asked there was still visible wax. Clipped some of the nails not all of them. So i pretty much just paid for a bath. When i contacted them about how unhappy i was with their service, the employee told me they had a new groomer that did poor work. That she would pass it along to her supervisor and that was it. So i paid 45$ for a bath.... and no help beyond that. Unprofessional, poor quality. Need some employees that care more, they have lost my business and anyone i can warn to stay away from this place. read more

The Taj Ma Paw is fantastic. My little girl goes five days a week and she loves it. And yes things can happen, it's dogs playing with dogs, they can get rough and they can get small scratches and stuff, but all I know is that when my little girl gets up, she jumps out of bed and has a fit to get to daycare. I can barely keep her in the car as I'm pulling into the parking lot. So, I say forget the bad reviews and listen to your baby. If they don't like it, they'll tell you. But if you pull up and they are trying to jump out the window to get inside, take them. And keep in mind, the people there aren't taking care of you, they're taking care of your dog... so if you feel their responses are not what you feel is appropriate, give them some slack because their responses to your dog are wonderful. And isn't that really all that matters? read more

Countless friends of mine have posted photos of their pets returning from this "business" with open wounds and emotionally traumatized. When asked about it, the owner has been volatile. Again, this is from multiple people with graphic photos, not just from one person I know. Not to mention it's located in essentially a strip mall on a busy street. There are dozens of more serene and better staffed places to take your pet in Roanoke, please don't risk their emotional and physical safety. read more

I had booked my dogs to stay for 2 weeks because my husband and I were moving. I don't know how they treat the dogs behind closed doors, but when I went to visit them I was horrified. Both of my dogs were noticeably skinnier and in desperate need of baths. I have never seen them that dirty. My white dog wasn't even white anymore--he was brown. He had bugs, dirt, and even urine all tangled up in his fur. I checked my dogs out one whole week early because of this. I cancelled the grooming I had scheduled as well. Both of my dogs had fleas and one of them had a tick. The guy that works there is nice and seemed to like my dogs, but honestly it's unacceptable the condition they were in. If you care about your pups, do NOT take them here. read more

DO NOT TAKE YOUR DOGS HERE after reading reviews I've decided to post my own now that I no longer work for this company. I've was working there for a little while and everything seemed to be fine. But a little after A month I started to notice things I really didn't like. Like dogs running free that will grow snap and snarling at dogs coming in. I have broken up flights and been told not to say anything. I've seen dogs with injuries and then told clean the dogs with peroxide and they will be fine. I saw a dog panting as if it was extremely hot make sure it had freshwater and when he didn't drink the water said something and was told he's fine. I know for a fact that the owner allows dogs with worms into his facility might say something to the owner but doesn't tell the owner of the dog can't come back to the worms are gone so it's spreading to other dogs. My last job working there was one I saw a dog that is been there boarded twice and the most I ever saw this dog it out of its kennel was maybe an hour a day and by itself. This particular dog looks like it may have the start of mange and when I brought it to their attention was told it was dry skin I know the difference between dry skin and mange. The owner is biased against certain dogs and let them roam free like they can do no wrong and other stay locked in a kennel because there are handful. read more

We've boarded with Taj a number of times. We have three dogs, two large and one very small. I love that the dogs can be outside playing as opposed to kenneled and allowed out periodically. That's a good thing. It's also true that the dogs seem to like it here. As a dog owner / patron, however, I've had a couple issues. 1. Early on one of my dogs came home limping. It was late and I didn't notice until I got home. I absolutely could not find out what the problem was so I called the next day. Chris (I believe the owner) answered the phone. I do try to avoid being accusatory, so I purposefully phrased my question as "I'm not accusing anyone, I simply want to know if anyone noticed anything. My dog came home limping". Chris immediately got hostile and said in no uncertain terms "THAT DIDN'T HAPPEN HERE". Well, as it turned out, in this case he was correct. My dog had Lyme disease and I didn't realize that lameness is a symptom. However, consider how much different a customer would feel if Chris had said (kindly and politely) "Gosh I'm sorry. I am not aware of anything happening. Let me ask my folks and get back to you." 2. Another time when I called for a reservation, the phone was picked up... and put down and I was left listening to conversations with other customers for a good five minutes. Then when Chris did pick up, I asked about a reservation and he literally scolded me telling me to use his online system. Again, I'd suggest a bit of politeness would go a long way. 3. My second large dog came home limping with a bloody foot. This time it was bad enough to be quite noticeable. This was not reported to me when I picked my dogs up. I did not bother to call and ask anything because it was pointless. I get that dogs hurt themselves playing. My guess is that this dog was running and stepped oddly on a rock or something. What bothers me is that injuries are not monitored and reported to the owners and if you ask, you get attitude. 4. I always include all necessary things in a zipped bag for the dogs, two are on lifetime medication, we like them fed their own food etc. The last time we boarded, my bag came home without the food scoop. Now, I get it so internet trolls go away. Food scoops are cheap. But I liked this one, it worked for my varying size dogs. I called and got Chris, told him I'd like to drop by and get it. He said "It got ate" and since I thought he was joking, I repeated myself. He said laughing (literally, laughing) again "it got ate" and then proceeded to tell me how all his stuff got chewed up all the time. Now, I've got three issues here. First, this is MINE and he should be taking care of things his customers leave for use with their dogs. Second, dogs under his care should not be eating random plastic stuff. It's not good for them. Third, if something is damaged he should be compensating his customers somehow not treating it like some big joke. If he wants to let his dogs eat his stuff, I repeat that's not good for them but it's his stuff. Not cool to let dogs eat customer's things. The attitude was just completely random and it was finally clear to me that I cannot trust this guy so I will not be bringing my dogs any longer. You decide whether these experiences are a problem. I've moved here from San Diego where my dogs boarded at a place that had EVERYTHING that happened with them logged, if they were injured I got a call and an explanation of what was done for them etc. I felt very comfortable that the dogs were well cared for. Taj is a very different experience. I hope to see some other boarding places around town stand up and compete to raise the standards. read more

I have two dogs that have visited regularly for 15 years and have had NO problems. I have had them groomed, used day care, and boarding. The owner took my dog and socialized him, now he loves other dogs. I read some of the reviews recently when looking up the phone number (which caused me to write) and would love to see the photos from "multiple" people that Eli B wrote about. If I even suspected someone of abusing my dog, the authorities would have been notified immediately. I cry wolf on these faceless reviews. read more

Please do not trust these people with your pets. We were in the process of moving and I needed some place quickly to board our 3 dogs because the movers were going to have every door in the house open for several days. I contacted Taj Mapaw and they had available space. I took my dogs there on Saturday morning before heading to work. I was provided the basic information forms by Tyler and informed him that they would be boarding over the weekend and that the female was ok to board with either male but the two males couldn't be left alone together. The following morning around 9a I receive a call from the owner Chris who said that Ramsey (my smaller male dog) wasn't feeling well and that he was all wet so he gave him a bath and cleaned him up and had him upfront with him. I asked him at that time if he had been with my other male dog and he said he thought so. I asked him if he needed to go to the vet or be picked up and he said I think he's fine I'll just keep him up here with me. 2 hours later I get a call that Ramsey doesn't seem to be doing any better and someone should probably come pick him up. We are out of town so I ask my son to go get him. About 20 minutes later I receive a call from Chris that they were taking Ramsey to the vet that he was having trouble breathing. My son goes directly to the vet where he is told that Ramsey had already passed when the person from Taj Mapaw brought him in. My son had to take our dog home and bury him. When I get to the place to pick up my other 2 dogs the owner has no empathy or remorse whatsoever. He actually had the nerve to say "well I won't charge you for Ramsey". He was a complete jerk. Then he told me it was my fault because I should have written it on the basic information form. EVEN THOUGH I CLEARLY TOLD HIS EMPLOYEE. I would never, ever trust anything living with those people. Negligent and careless is an understatement. read more

Unfortunately I had to board my dog there overnight for an emergency. The entrance is filthy, smells of urine and the owner unfriendly. I was told it was $22 to board overnight, and if I picked up after 11AM the following morning, the next day would be a prorated amount. I dropped off at 530PM and picked up at 3PM the following day - less than 24 hours in their facility and was charged $44 for two whole days (nothing prorated). I attempted to speak with the owner (Chris) by phone, and was interrupted frequently until he then hung up on me. When I called back and said how poor his customer service was, and that he was clearly taking advantage of his customers and his response was "Well, I don't care." And clearly he does not. I will never return and I advise to avoid this facility. read more

If you enjoy having to take your pet to the vet after you pick them up this is the place for you. I had to take my 9 month old lab to get 9 wounds on all four legs, puncture wound on his side, and a torn ear cleaned after only two nights there. This is the last place I will ever take my dogs again. The older man who works there clearly does not love dogs as much as my husband and I do. We brought enough food for them to consume during their stay and left with extra food to bring home. When we got home, they were clearly dehydrated and starving. Unfortunately, we did not address this issue during pick up because we were so anxious to get our dogs out of there. The older man, who we assumed was the owner, could not have been more rude and impatient. He clearly had other priorities other than running this business. We treat our dogs like they are our kids. If other dog owners are reading this review, please do not bring your dogs to this establishment. I recently used Aspen Grove and due to having very little time to plan for this weekend trip, I opted for Taj Mapaw. It was a big mistake. Although it is cheaper, the service was terrible and I will find a way to bring my dogs back to Aspen Grove in the future. read more

I had to take my dog here due to having to go out of town unexpectedly and the boarding facility we normally take our dogs to was booked. This was a huge mistake. When we picked my dog up he smelled of very strong urine and the bed we brought him to sleep on was soaked in urine. He acted scared and not his usual self upon bringing him home and drank an exhorbant amount of water as though he was severely dehydrated. Also, they were 15 mins late opening when we were there on time to pick up our dog. Something about this place is extremely questionable and I would never recommend taking any animals here. In fact, my dog is a rescue dog and acted better and more "normal" coming out the pound than this facility. read more

Take your dog(s) literally ANYWHERE ELSE! Our experience with this place the one & only time we've used them was horrendous! And if we'd had the time to read through the countless terrible reviews first, we NEVER would've even considered this place! Customer Service/interaction with the owner is truly awful! Never had a worse experience with a business owner that I was giving money to! Many dogs are left in the facility unattended for HOURS! We were paying to have our dogs watched and cared for while we were away, not to be left unattended for hours on end! We had to have police interaction just to be able to physically see that our dogs were unharmed before we paid! Our littlest dog (6 lb Morkie who needs to be taken out frequently because of his small bladder) CLEARLY had not been taken out hardly at all and was left to pee in whatever confinement they had him in. He reeked of urine and had to be bathed the moment we got home! The reports of pets being returned with injuries, open wounds, signs of abuse, animal escape, and even DEATH are despicable! DO NOT TAKE YOUR PETS HERE! I'd rate less than 1 star if possible! (Oh, and the owner will try to convince you that EVERY bad review is from his competitors - that is a LIE! - I most certainly not a competitor, just someone who wants to see this place shut down!) read more
