Here I was: a liberal San Franciscan very far away from home, dropped into the middle of conservative Louisiana. While trying to blend in and watch some good ol' Fox News to complement my new location, I stumbled across this joint. Like any ambitious visitor, I had made it my goal to hunt down some alligator to mark my virgin experience into the south. When I first came in here, they said they had run out of much of their stock but were due a new shipment soon. The owner and staff were so so nice and their sincerity really stuck in my head. Came back a couple days later and as promised, it was time to nom on the alligator! My boyfriend and I had the alligator sausage po-boy, shrimp and fries, hush puppies, the grilled asparagus, and what I remember to be something like alligator tender strips. I gotta say the strips and the hush puppies were the best. The strips came w a sauce that worked well w the meat, and the hush puppies were so soft. The fried shrimp was on the salty side and the grilled asparagus were somewhat limp, lacking that crunch. But overall, the food was pretty good. It was definitely satisfying as a snack and quick meal. And the verdict on the first time gator? The texture of the tender strips were softer, and it was harder to tell it was gator. But the gator sausage for sure tasted more unique. Definitely a little more chewy, and glad to have finally tried it! But I guess ultimately I'm a beef or chicken girl haha The bar is pretty spacious, and even better - across from inside it is also another bar that serves a HUGE variety of slushee cocktail drinks. Like, their selection is intensely impressive, and you can sample to your hearts content. The prices on these drinks are super affordable, and I got too excited to get turnt and ordered a cup size way too large for myself to even finish. I played my flavors safe and ordered a strawberry daiquiri w a vodka base (can't go wrong w SD!) and it was so good. If you like your drinks light or easy w a meal, don't order the second shot. If you like your drink w more kick, definitely get that second shot add on. I'm so glad I stopped by this joint. It's a great place to kick back, and get a snack, and beyond that, the service and staff are just so friendly and phenomenal. Coco and Daisy especially made huge efforts to provide recommendation and accommodation. When this city girl needs a break away from the city, I just might show up at this place again. read more

Out in DeRidder for work, and I went into this place expecting it to be Tail'gators, but it's actually called Southgate Wings and Things. That was the 1st of two things that were unexpected when I got here. The other was how good the burger was! I got the Muenster and Swiss burger (medium of course), and it came out perfectly! The burger was juicy and flavorful. Considering myself to br a burger snob/connoisseur/expert, I did not expect that. I should have taken a pic, but I didn't expect it to be so good, so you have to take my word for it, lol. I would definitely come back. read more

We waited 20 minutes for our appetizer to come out. Dipping sauce was missing but no big deal. Once we finished our appetizer, we waited another 20 minutes for our server to come back to take our order. She took another group's order first, even though we got there first. About an hour and a half into our dinner time, the manager comes out and tells us they ran out of bone-in wings. Our food comes out after almost 2 hours of waiting. My husband didn't get utensils or dipping sauce. My burger was somehow burnt and cold. And my onion rings were black. At that point, I wanted to walk out. So, living in Fort Polk, i know there Is not a lot of variety, but i like to try different things, and the lack of information on yelp arose my curiosity. My initial observation of the bar was it is definately a biker bar/ hangout spot more than a bring your family to eat kind of place. Not offputting to me at all, but would definately limit the customer base in my opinion. They were somewhat busy at the bar, causing me to wait at least 5 minutes before acknowldged, but the waitress who did come to help me apologized and was very nice. Another thing I noticed right away is that smoking is allowed, awesome for me since I haven't been in a place I could smoke in years. When she came to me I was informed it is cash or they hold your card as a "tab" until checkout. Looking around I saw 2 pool tables, a dartboard and approximately seating for roughly 75 people. With 3 long tables, and few 4 seaters, as well as spots to sit at the bar as well as by the pool tables. Now, on to the food. I ordered 6 chicken wings ahs the gator poboy that cane with a choice of fries or onion rings, I chose the latter. Chicken wings - "Cajun dry rub" were nice and crispy but lacking on the seasoning aspect. Out of the 7 pieces I got (bonus wing!!!) Only about 3 of them had a resemblance of seasoning, and tasted more like season salt more than Cajun seasoning. Onion rings - generous portion size, batter was tasty, somewhat crispy but still at the same time somewhat soft. They were decent, but nothing to go out of the way for. Blackened gator poboy - both the highlight and disappointing at the same time. The gator was delicious, but when I think poboy, it usually comes with mayo, the absence of mayo made the sandwich rather dry, so about halfway through I put it down and just ate the gator, so I was still extremely satisfied. Overall, for $18 and some change, not bad at all. I would come back, but probably not with the family. Still beats the hell out of chili's. read more

A hidden gem for bar food and drinks in the area. The food is great and the service outstanding. A combination of sports bar with great food, adult beverages and an option of Daiquiris on the other side of the bar. Live music or DJ every so often and very chill place to spend time with friends or a quick bite when in town. Highly recommend this place. read more

First time I went on a Thursday night. Service was slow but food was great. Went last night to try it again with friends (Saturday) and service was even worse. Our sever gave us our food and didn't check on us once. I had to go up to the bar for a drink refill. Also had to go up and ask for our check because no one was coming back to our table. read more

So my mom came in town for the weekend and we decided to come here. GREAT atmosphere, very clean. The barmaids were very nice and made sure to keep checking on us. The daiquiris were good but wasn't strong enough for me. THE FOOD WAS SOOOOO GOOOD. (not being dramatic) we got "The gators Revenge" burger, fried pickles, & boudin balls. Will be back!! read more

Came in for lunch during the week. The place was dead (only 2 tables) yet our waitress seemed panicked and overwhelmed. Took close to 40 min to receive my drink. The food was decent but nothing exceptional. Two people at our table received the wrong sides to which the server said that what was written on the ticket! This place would be a good candidate for the show bar rescue, get some staff that actually care about the customer more than smoking cigarettes every 10 min at the bar. read more

I love the ambiance of this place but that's about it. Hometown bar feel with some pool tables and daiquiri machines so I thought I was going to love it. It took about 10 minutes for a server to come over to our table and take drink orders even though there was only one other table in the building. We ordered most waters a couple sodas and a bloody mary. It took another 10 minutes to get our waters and sodas. All of the water was out of the faucet, yuck! And 20 minutes later my fiance got his terrible bloody mary. Our server/bartender had zero idea what she was doing and brought him a half full glass of what she apparently thought was a bloody mary. We all ordered burgers and 2 of the people at the table recieved the wrong side items. The burgers were nothing special at all. We also got some wings that were cooked well but the dry cajun majorly lacked in seasoning. Another weird thing was 2 of the ketchups at the table tasted sour. The server was absolutely clueless to our problems and never apologized or tried to make things better. Our experience here was quite awful and I'm honestly not positive how this business continues to have customers. read more

The wait staff was very slow. The wings were bad , presentation. Waitress did not take my complete order. The smoking was distracting, when touching food with no gloves. The staff that were not working was more attentive. It's a nice looking bar, just needs a small overhaul. Good vibes can be created their with personable staff. read more

This place is a dive bar for sure! The bars keeps are friendly but will bust your balls. Beer is cold and cheap. I recommend the food. Unfortunately, they do smoke inside. read more

Please note: this place is 90% bar and 10% grill if taking your kids. The food was pretty tasty for being a bar. Service was a little slow but again I think we were served by a cocktail waitress. They do smoke in here so if your not a fan of smelling don't go!!! read more

If I could I would have rated a zero. I became very sick after eating here. Vomiting and diarrhea. Extremely hot spices were dumped on top of my food. When I returned the next day and asked for a manger the staff called the police. After over an hour and police they remade it. I could have been asking for hospital bills but all I wanted was a an apology and a refund. Use caution when asking for a manger and for your safety don't eat here. read more

I've been to Fort Polk twice this year, once at the beginning of the year and once a few weeks ago. Each time I stopped by Tail Gators at least twice doing each visit, I really enjoyed the food and daiquiris. read more

Not a kid place. It's 7:30 pm and they refused service to our group of four because we had a 3 year old. The bar was 100% empty.

Love this place! This is the kind of bar/restaurant I wish could be in my hometown. When you walk in, there are two huge walls of frozen daiquiri machines in every conceivable flavor, plus a bartender who specializes in creating new combinations. She's happy to give multiple samples until you find the precise mix you like. The food is even better. If you've never tried blackened alligator, this is the place to try it. If you've had blackened alligator before, one bite and you won't want it anywhere else. Service is friendly, atmosphere is fun, and prices are fair. This is a definitely don't miss. read more
