Well it's another ride that brings me to Bakersfield tonight and my client is meeting some family here fir dinner. The occasion...not a Prom, not a graduation, nope she is handing out Scholarship money to HS students. Wow She's been practicing her speech on the drive over. I dropped her off to park and came in to get some dinner for my self. Good menu, good stuff, and not over bearing to peruse. Of course steaks, some chicken, ribs, salads, and handheld burger's & sandwiches. dessert too. I gotta keep it fast tonite so I ordered a Citrus Chicken Salad and some Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes... Now there are Happy Hour food items, which are actually reasonably priced And heres dinner, the crab cakes are Not Breaded, thank you. Seared patties the crab mix with just a hint of red peppers and...I thought they were very good and accompanied by Avocado cream and Joes mustard sauce, which really tasted like mayonnaise. The salad was Big, lots of weeds and other good bits although tough to know how much sliced chicken breast was really in there. Tahoe Joe's happy hour still gives a pretty solid variety, especially when you want a mix of appetizers and drinks without spending too much. The railroad camp shrimp was great as always and continues to be one of the more dependable things on the menu, while the fish tacos were tasty but the fish portions were definitely about half the size of what I got on my last visit in December . (SORRY NO FOOD PICS DURING FAMILY GATHERINGS) The calamari steak was below average for me this time, I get it every time we are here this time it was very fishy in fact so bad, I returned it this time..not something I would rush back for. The steak sliders were very good, but I will say the roll can kind of lacerate the roof of your mouth if you are not careful, so dipping it into the au jus first is probably the best move; not complaining about the roll, just making an observation . The loaded fries were good, and the seasoning on the regular fries worked really well with the cheese, bacon, and chives bringing everything together, so good im asking for sour cream on the side next time. The raspberry lemon drop and blended margaritas were both very good too,Christopher our server was attentive and moved an umbrella to block the sun while dining on the outside patio. without us even asking.. It was our first time at Tahoe Joe's and we really enjoyed the atmosphere. It was a busy Thursday night, so our food took a little while to arrive, but everything was worth the wait. This is a standard steak house they have changed a lot of things up on their menu, the service is pretty decent I believe they were under staffed on the day my wife and I went they did a good job on keeping up with all the costumers, the food is good not the best they took away from their dessert menu they only serve cheesecake and pie. Had not been here in a while and decided to stop for dinner. I ordered a beer and it arrived not even topped off. Then the bread arrived which was nice warm and good, but one of the bread plates was dirty with caked break stuck to it. I ordered a $16 burger; not worth it IMO. It had no taste and a tomato the size of a pickle lol; however, i will say the fires were nice, crispy and crunchy. The Joes steak came medium but didn't have much taste and was a bit chewy. This place really has good food for the prices and the portions are big. I've come by for Happy Hour a few times now and it's always great. I think the food has gone down tremendously here at Tahoe Joe's. I remember back in the days thinking this steakhouse was pretty superior to the other ones in town. My husband ordered a ponderosa sirloin for his lunch and asked the server if they can make it medium rare and when she came back w the steak that steak was super raw and bleeding everywhere. In the words of Gordon Ramsey "all it needs is a field and a damn moo because that thing is bloody raw". My husband is not squeamish when it comes to a rare steak, but I think the cook that day didn't know the difference between raw and rare. I ordered the Bacon Wrapped Bourbon Shrimp and the bacon that was wrapped around the shrimp tasted like Bar S bacon. Don't get me wrong, I actually like Bar S bacon, but it tasted like Bar S bacon that's been sitting there for a while so then it tastes like you're biting into a chewy piece of fat and the rice was supposed to be a veggie pilaf but it had some type of chow mein or lo mein noodles instead of orzo. I thought that was a little weird. It wasnt a bad dish, just that the bacon needed to be cooked more and that the noodles in the rice pilaf was unexpected. It's gonna take some time before I come back again. Service was okay, nothing extravagant. They have the best sourdough rolls which are even better when they are warm (they could do a better job of keeping them warmer so they taste more fresh but they are still delicious regardless). I normally order a wood-grilled chicken breast and I drizzle it with their amazing champagne vinaigrette dressing that is a must have. Switched it up for my birthday dinner this year. I almost always go for sushi each and every year. However, I wanted my dad to try Tahoe Joe's here in Bakersfield since he is a huge fan of Wood Ranch at the Grove. We placed a reservation online which was a good idea given it was very packed on a Saturday evening. We had the pan seared calamari and nachos as starters. The calamari was a pleasant surprise because it was very tender. The pistachio crust and the squeeze of lime really enhanced the flavor and texture of this appetizer. It reminded me of a Mediterranean dish with its simplicity in preparation but packed with flavor in each bite. The nacho order was massive. Set on a wood plank, it came with the works; protein, cheese, tomatoes, guac and green onions. After all the appetizers, I decided to just have the seared ahi tuna plate for my main since I'm already pretty full. The rest of my companions ordered the pulled pork sandwich, ribs with shrimp combo and the prime rib dinner. Over all, the food was good on this night. I have forgotten how consistently good Tahoe Joe's food have always been each time I've been here in the past. Perhaps I've been one of the luckier ones who has had good service and tasty food each time when dining here. Judging by some of the more recent reviews, it's been a hit-and-miss for some diners. We took mom for her 72nd birthday last night. It was honestly the worst meal we have had in a while. One diner never received their soup. The calamari app was so undercooked you could smell it from down the table. We did not eat it and they did take it off the bill. They were out of almost all steaks, so a few diners got the T-Bones. They looked like something you could get at Denny's. Thin, lanky meat that was way too fatty. We also ordered the nachos. They were inedible. The campfire shrimp were ok, but tasted different. I ended up here because I bought a ticket for a fund raiser. I tried to call in the order for Pick Up and couldn't get through for two hours. I didn't want to use the online ordering because people in my party have specific dietary needs. Word online (gluten-free websites) was that the staff was very uninformed about dietary restrictions and the website has no information about it. Live ordering was my only option. SO, I drove there at 6:30 and stood at the front door for 15 minutes. I finally hooked a busboy and asked him where I should stand for To Go orders. He directed me. I went to the little counter, which was manned by a middle-aged blonde woman who was clearly not fond of customer service. No "hello"s or "thank you"s or anything. I showed her the tickets for three dinners purchased in the charity event - in cooperation with Tahoe Joe's. She asked if I had phoned in the order and I said, "I tried but..." Before I could she let out a heavy sigh and turned away from me without a word. She finished entering a few other tickets -right in front of me - and then said, "I just gotta do these..." When the other tickets were done, she got back to me. "So what do you want?" I told her, "Well, the thing is there are people in my party with special dietary needs, so we have to discuss these." Another heavy sigh, this time accompanied by hitting the counter, open palm, and shifting her weight. "Yeah, okay, what is it?" I told her one order, no restrictions, and she jotted it down I thought getting through one success might lighten her mood. Then I said, "We have one person who can't eat dairy." Again the sigh, the counter clap and this time a tongue click as well. She wrote down "ribs" because they seemed safe (to me). She only offered: "Well there's no butter in BBQ sauce, is there?" I'm wondering how many different BBQ sauce recipes she's sampled for that observation, but thought 'let's move on.' "Is there butter in the mashers?" Heavy sigh, counter clap, toungue click... she turns, goes to the kitchen without a word and comes back and says simply, "Yeah there is." I ask, "there's butter in the mashers?" "Yeah," she says, glaring at me, waiting for me to come up with something else. Mind you I have not seen a menu, nor is one offered to me. There is only a sign above the counter that says, "Try Our Family Style Dinners featuring steak * ribs * chicken * shrimp" I ask if he can have a baked potato instead. "No, we don't do that." I'm momentarily at a loss. "So just the green beans, then?" "Do the green beans have butter on them?" Sigh. Click. Clap. Heel turn. She comes back. "Yes they do." "Okay - I guess only a green salad?" She finally comes up with an idea: steamed vegetables. Shocker. "Yeah, let's go with that." I tried to get to the third dinner order, which was destined to be her Everest. We only got as far as "There's no gluten in BBQ sauce, is there?" I just requested chicken, no sauce and steamed vegetables. While waiting, she also asked if those special diets could eat bread. I paid $25 for a dry chicken breast, steamed vegetables and green salad with oil and vinegar, another $25 for ribs (same sides) and one ribs with the regular stuff. I had entered into this to support student athletes at a local high school. Next time I'll just write them a check and cook at home. It is now 7:40 and I'm just leaving. Got home with my order. Croutons on all the salads and no sauce on the side as promised. She showed me the order before I left, but I didn't notice these details while I was there. Alas. read more
