Things were looking good as I entered the establishment and was greeted with live music and a friendly staff. Ordered a Guinness because it's an Irish bar and thats what i came for! Unfortunately I was given a Guinness in a plastic cup. I am usually pretty chill about cups but to order a Guinness at an Irish pub and to be given the sweet nectar in a commoners beer vessel, unhappy. I asked the guy if i could get a glass cup for it he just smiled shook his head and retreated to the back. I lost my go to Irish pub for a Guinness this day and am now looking for somewhere that would at least treat the number 1 beer appropriately. Am I being too picky? Maybe and I am open to that criticism, however show me an Irish pub that would proudly do this. I get it your in a high stress environment and deal with drunk people, it sucks, but when you gotta release your aggression on the customers that don't deserve it because the big loud ones might put up a fight.... maybe it's time for a career change. Been here a few times over the years and it's always been a good time. We went last Friday for Game 1 of the World Series and they did everything right. Great crowd, great seating, great drinks, great everything. Owner is the man - since they normally don't do food, he bought amazing BBQ for everyone. I wish I could remember the name of the BBQ place because I'd love to go eat there again. He also ordered pizzas for everyone. Even though it was busy, our group never waited for a drink, always got our drink order right. Bartenders were fantastic! Whenever I'm in Bako I'll definitely go into this spot. This place is super clean and the staff is fast and friendly, but the drinks are a little on the pricey side compared to other bars in town. The drinks are strong and tasty! This is definitely more of a chill place to have drinks. I didn't notice any pool tables or dart boards, but there were plenty of cozy seats and tables to sit around with your friends and just hang out! They also had several tvs on and good music playing.. This local dive is an awesome place usually! The staff is always friendly, the drinks are well poured and reasonably priced. What sets this place apart is their live music and the amazing bands they usually have play. My husband and I love to come out and dance, but the band they had last night, Rayford, managed to kill the whole vibe of the bar. They are a group of talented musicians, that said, it made me extremely uncomfortable to see the guitarist repeatedly yell at the other people on the stage. We came to dance, you came to play. This is My Favorite Irish Pub in Town! Even though nothing will ever replace the old John Bryan's (Did I spell that right?) and The Tam, back in the 80's and before, especially John, the Bartender, and Richard, The Bouncer, McGarry's puts out the same cool, secure vibe of those Bakersfield treasures! They even have a cool live band once in I while. I saw the talented band called Dub Seeds, about a year ago, and the place was jumpin', just like when theThe Press and The Mooners rocked our world, and even let other musicians sit in!!! What makes this place special is Friendship. It was built on Friendship! When James passed away in 2019, his friends pulled their resources together, and created McGarry's to help his family and keep the tradition of his love of sports going. I have participated in a few fundraisers since they opened, and I feel like I am supporting a worthy cause. This is what makes Bakersfield such an amazing place! Johnny Carson made fun of it, because he wasn't well received at the old Maison's on Union Avenue, back in the day, but those of us who have called it home, for almost a half a century, know better! Gave the jukebox a look and little to no Irish pub music to select. Would recommend if you're looking for yet another country bar. Cannot recommend if you're looking for an Irish pub. read more

A couple of friends suggested we head to McGarry's to check out the band Saturday night. The vibe was good and the large crowd was loud. I ordered drinks for the three of us and the service was quick, even with a large crowd on hand. They have Cali Squeeze Blood Orange on tap. If you haven't tried it you should, it's an excellent citrus beer brewed by Firestone brewery in Paso Robles. The band (Misty Red) was stellar. 80's classic rock with an occasional earlier/later circa song thrown in. The guitar work some of the best I've heard in a long time. Female vocals were excellent and the drummer laid down I really quality groove. I can definitely recommend this place for a night on the town. The band played until 11:00PM, I'd liked to have seen them go to midnight. There was also plenty of security on hand which is nice to see when people are out late drinking. read more

My wife and I were Just passing through Bakersfield last night on our way to Vegas. We secured a room for the night and searched Yelp for an "Irish Pub". McGarry's had some good reviews so we went there! It was a very nice experience!! We were welcomed as we took a couple of comfortable seats at the bar. Minor point maybe but I hate those hard wooden or steel stools they have in many bars! KATIE was our bartender and she was awesome! Very attentive to our needs. The Guinness was well kept and went down well! The restrooms were very clean and they have a nice patio area for those wanting to be outdoors or smoking. For a Wednesday it stayed pretty full all night with folks having fun. I assume quite a few regulars and I found myself shaking hands and chatting to complete strangers. On a side note, which impressed me was the other bartender was cleaning shelves and bottles when he wasn't serving. Overall a very nice evening at McGarry's. And now to Vegas ! read more

Security's on a weird power trip. I'll start by saying the place is fine. Drinks are fine. Ambiance is fine. However, I forgot my card there yesterday and came back to get it tonight - my id was in my other bag at home and security wouldn't let me in to get my debit without it. Fair. I was frustrated and left in a huff, but immediately apologized before I got to the curb because I know they're just doing their job and I'd had a long night so I was primed for being snappy and that's not on them. Went and got my id and came back only for security to go off on me because I wasn't nice enough to him 20 mina prior. He went far enough to point out that I was a bitch etc. He then refused to let me in to get my debit card (which I don't believe is legal but that's beside the point). I spent another 15-20 mins calling the bar until I finally get an answer and they say they'll bring my card out to me. I wait for another grip of time and nothing. By this point I've been here an hour. Finally security comes back out and says "they can't find it". I know I left it there, and if they can't keep track of cards for a single day then that also says a lot. I myself work at a bar and know we will store cards in our safe for a very long time if they're left behind. So I leave and cancel the card, it is what it is. Long story short, seems like security gets off on having that small bit of power over a woman who is just asking to get her debit card back and the people behind the bar won't keep track of your cards if they're left. Be smarter than I was. If you're going to visit this place, make sure you're very very nice to the sensitive staff and don't open a tab, pay as you go. read more

I went here on Friday night with my friend and they over charged both of our cards. I tried to call the phone number on my receipt and didn't get an answer. I had a $10 drink and they charged me $25!! My friend's drink was $7 and her card was charged $25. I will never go back to this bar. They're pulling some fraud stuff there by over charging people's cards. If you go my suggestion is pay with cash only or you're going to get over charged and won't get your money back. read more

First off let me tell you that this is a decent all-around bar. In the few times I've been there, there's always been a good and a bad to it. The interior with a penny laden bar and a large painting of the namesake near the end of the bar. As for the patio, it's very small and narrow on the side and not much else for room on the front. I will give each and every patron a warning. It is in Rosedale... there is a lot of ruffians and other such rowdy types that do patronize the bar. Many are looking for trouble or have something to prove/drama to go with it. It is not too uncommon to see/hear shouting along with many punches along with drinks thrown. Especially on Friday and Saturday nights. For the most part I really don't come to fight. I just come for a beer and to catch up with a few friends. With that being said I also would encourage every patron to just pay in cash and pay as you go. I will return but next time I hope all don't have to bring any boxing gloves or and mouth guard. read more

I went here for a drink with some friends and That was all I can remember having. I don't remember leaving the bar and when I looked at my credit card the next day I had been charged $186 that I don't remember signing for. I don't understand how the bar staff can continuously serve someone who isn't even coherent enough to even walk out alone let alone still rack up a tab that high. After speaking with multiple people I have come to find out I wasn't the only one this has happened to, There are more who have gone in and had one maybe two drinks and then not remembering anything afterwards or being charged a ridiculous amount. I love to support small businesses, especially after they all struggled so badly during covid. However, I will NEVER be back to this bar again. Here's why... A friend and I went for a drink in the evening a few days ago. We had one drink each. The bartender was friendly. He asked to hold our cards. No problem, I've worked in bars for 10-11 years and this is standard in case a customer tries to walk out without paying. All was fine (or so I thought) til the next morning. I checked my bank statement and saw that I had been charged $25 from McGarrys. I immediately thought, "wtf?!?!?" as my bill was $12.83 (including tip). I went down in person to speak to the manager and was told by a bartender that the owners have their employees immediately charge you up for $25. I explained how that didn't make any sense as customers give you our card and you only charge us at the end for what we actually purchased. If a customer walks out without paying, then you just go ahead and swipe the card that they gave you in the beginning, that way you don't lose out on a tab. You NEVER automatically just decide to randomly charge them for a made up amount in case they walk out. That's called theft. He explained that the bank would process it and I'd get the $25 back and then be charged for my actual bill of $12.83. I have never in all my life ever had a bar do this!! I've only ever had hotels charge a deposit immediately in case of room damage. And, that's very standard for hotels to have that kind of policy. The owners of this bar have established such a deceitful & ridiculous business practice!! And, before they come back swinging that many bars do this, NO THE HELL THEY DON'T! To the owners, please learn how to run a business appropriately. Stop being sketchy. There's great business classes that are taught down in LA. Attend one. Sonders is literally across the street and has great drinks & food. Sonders does not have any shady billing practices to their customers. I highly recommend making the trip across the street instead. read more

This place really gets no stars it is nice inside but the security in the front wouldn't let 2 of our group claiming fake ID's I never had that experience especially when we're all over the age of 21. It's not only us that he did this to its multiple people he told there ID was fake then he'll ask to see your Facebook what establishment does this. I am very disappointed because it's a bar around the nicer part of town. So me and my group went next door to El Portal, it's right next door and way better that McGarrys. 0/10 would not recommend this place. read more
