3* Another one of those places that were voted best of the IE. Again, not sure who votes on these things or what criteria are set to qualify, but I will say these are middle of the road tacos. Not the best even within the same vicinity. I was looking to order a variety of tacos to get a wide range of flavors. However, their menu is limited during the week and the cuts like cabeza and cachete are only offered on the weekends. I was limited to asada and adobada. While the tacos are a good size for the price I will say none of the flavors stood out in a positive way. The asada in particular I was tasting hours after eating. Not very pleasant. The adobada tacos were pretty bland in flavor, but were packed with pork. So, as said earlier you get a bang for your buck but flavor wise they leave much to be desired. I took my order to go, but one thing I have noticed is that the restaurant itself is always empty inside so how they were voted the best is puzzling. In short, come by and taste them for yourself. As a goodwill suggestion: try using Goya Adobo and cooking the meat with garlic, onion, cilantro, bay leaf, a clove or two, and a couple of allspice. I'm mad I've passed by this place before thinking they were closed. Their chorizo and Al pastor tacos were amazing. At first I thought it was pricey but when you get them you realize that they're worth it. The most generous portions I've seen in both meat and guacamole in a taco. Finally a taco spot with Adobada!! I've only had Adobabda from Tacos El Gordo in Vegas and these are pretty comparable. The adobabda here is charred but not burnt and not dry either. Super flavorful. Their salsas are lacking flavor. I wish they had a green salsa. I love that they have a drive thru. So convenient! Got the asada tacos, I'm pretty sure they were frozen and microwaved because when I received the tacos, the tray was wet on the bottom and the tortillas broke apart as tried lifting the tacos. The superstar is the Carne Asada! It has that smoky wood burning grill taste, just like you find in TJ. The creamy guacamole is TJ too, it smooth's out the smokiness of the meat. The Cabeza and Cachete are good too, they are soft and the green chile is nice and spicy. But my big complaint is the white paper they wrap the taco. It sticks to the tortilla, so when I tried pealing it off it tore the tortillas making it difficult to eat. This paper tore apart all of my six tacos. THIS WRAPING PAPER MUST GO!! Checked this location out on a Friday night. There was a line but nothing too bad. It was a chilly night so I'm glad this location has indoor seating! Tried out tacos de adobada (marinated pork), cabeza (head), asada (beef), pollo (chicken) and chorizo (pork sausage). Also got some mulitas for the kids. Mulitas are basically a cheese quesadilla with any meat of your choice inside. I'm Mexican and grew up in the southern most city of San Diego before crossing the border into TIjuana (San Ysidro) Needless to say living in Orange County always has me on a quest for the most delicious tacos because I miss and crave the taste of real deal TJ style tacos. That being said, Tacos La Central ARE THE REAL DEAL. They are owned and operated by Tijuanenses. One who comes from a long family history in the TJ taco scene. So trust me when I tell you they are LEGIT! The only difference (which I know consumers will love and appreciate) is that they PACK ON THE MEAT! You have meat spilling out of your taco with every bite, that's a good thing!! All you need to do is pick it right back up with your finger, fork, or left over tortilla! Now my biggest pet peeve and what I normally come across in asada tacos, is a bunch of fatty bits of meat that are tough and hard to chew. I'm always picking them out of my taco. But not at Tacos La Central!! I ATE EVERY PIECE OF CHOPPED UP ASADA IN MY TACOS! So this tells me they are using QUALITY MEATS! The adobaba tacos are always my favorite. They seasoned, cooked, and cut theirs to perfection! Yum!! Next, tacos de cabeza (head). Sounds scary but it's really not. They take the meat (only) off a cows head and steam cook it (al vapor). Proper way to eat this is with a squeeze of lime and a dash of salt to your liking. I love that they leave you to add the salt, it's a good thing if you are trying to keep things healthier in your diet. I had 4 tacos and was so full! I love street tacos handmade tortillas are a bonus. They have an avocado salsa that is amazing. Almost taste liKe the avocadoless salsa taco spots are known for making. I was extremely excited because you can smell the char as you walk in. The asada however had no flavor. All I could taste was the smokiness. I know sometimes people forget to season their food so I would give it another try but even the chicken was lacking flavor. They offer salt packets and fresh cut limes which made my food tasty. I had one asada tacos, one chicken taco and mulitas. They give you heavy meat servings so I think it's worth the money they charge i just wish it had actual seasoning.
