The food taste like a loving family meal. I tried both scrambled egg & ham and huevos a la Mexicana (Mexican scramble which had a spicy kick on few bites and very tolerable at that!). Both were delicious and if I had to recommend one it would be the Mexican scramble! Instead of adding ketchup I ordered two sides of green and red sauce, which I added to eggs. YUMMY! The beans and rice side was so comforting. It came with two tortilla chips in the beans. I initially ignored the chips but decided to try and they were actually yummy! I ended up eating more chips from plates that didnt touch them! I'd def come back and because the refried pinto beans were good I'm planning on getting a bean and cheese burrito mojado! The place is huge with plenty of seating. The service was kind. I heard the chef know who I assume was a regular guy picking up his order by name which was nice to see how they treat repeat customers. Just went with my kiddo's it was bad. The place smells like old grease and the food looks/smells/tastes old. I had the chile relleno meal and it was soggy, soupy and tasted like the rice and beans were spoiled. My kids ate the carne asada fries and the meat was old tasting, the fries were old tasting and the cheese was basically melted American cheese. I ordered a shrimp cocktail and the flavor was severely lacking. It was extremely bland that even the cucumber and onion didn't have much flavor which was weird. The portion size was good so I'm able to save half of it for another meal though. My husband got a quesadilla and he said it was just 'okay'. He got the grilled chicken. I also got an Horchata and that was really good! Though I will say I got a medium and their mediums are similar to smalls by today's standard. I love getting carne asada fries here! It's my favorite place to get them. My boyfriend and I also tried the fried tilapia and it's so good because it came with tortillas and it's really filling. This review is not for the food but should still be read. It's important. On the way to Southern California from Sacramento this morning my companion and I (aged 64 and 57) had a tire blow out as we were going 70 mph. We waited an hour for Auto Club on the shoulder of the road. Finally towed in on flat bed truck to Les Schwab. During the wait we decided to walk to Subway for a sandwich, even though we wouldn't be able to eat inside. I noticed two tables outside of El Grullense. Both empty. The restaurant was completely empty as well. A man from El Grullense came out and told us to leave. I said we will only be a few minutes and will pick up our trash. He said, "no" and made us leave. I am a small business owner and would never think of treating anyone this way - vendor, client, employee, neighbor. In the past I have had homeless people come in looking for a handout and even though we are an office with limited food on hand I always manage to scrape something together for them. With how hard life is these days, doesn't it seem like some compassion goes a long way? Of course this man didn't know we broke down on the freeway but being in the restaurant/hospitality industry (and with a completely empty restaurant), he could have come out to let us know they were his tables but we were fine to use them. There are a lot of good restaurants run by decent and reasonable people. Give your business to them. read more

My Dad and I took a shot on this place while driving around on vacation in the Bay Area. This was around 6ish, and we were sitting outside, so it was windy. Still, the outdoor seating was beautiful, and the day was nice. The entire indoor area was packed, a testament to their delicious food. We got the Quesabirria, two for each of us and several sauces on the side dad liked more than me. The meat was so fresh, and it the tacos themselves tasted really fresh and delicious. I was surprised (in a good way) by our service. This is the location in San Carlos, just so people know. The woman behind the counter was very helpful in giving us recommendations (we also got some tacos al pastor and grilled chicken tacos) and the staff had our food out swiftly. We also had two large horchatas, and i had never had one before (spoiler alert, they were fantastic). Would recommend their food to anyone who sees, whether you drive past it every day or are in town visiting. Cannot speak to the service at other places, but in the San Carlos/Redwood city area there is this place, which I would come back for again and again. 5 stars, 11/10. read more

This place is incredible! 15/10. The food is fresh, prepared with care and when you order take out, the ensure your food is secure from spilling over. That's rare in any food service nowadays. I have ordered the menudo (you get a huge pata), the shrimp cocktail, the aguachiles, the Quesabirria, the tostada mixta and thats not even the complete list. The person who took our order was a young woman may have been 18-20, she declared "you didn't say you wanted that", and YOU DIDN'T ASK. You been racist with me i just want my food or give me my money back . manager approche to her phone and put her translator and slam her hand in the wall saying inspection was good no need to worry but in a rude way . i then approach to the cashier the light skinnied short hispanic lady to please make my burrito or give me my money back she was so kind she came out of her position and help me make my burrito she was so kind to make it for me .
