So much so, it's time for an updated review. I called ahead but it didn't really matter since seating was swift the night we went. I will say that the biggest downside is the small entry...when people are waiting, they often forget there's other people in the world other than themselves. We were quickly seated and the chips, salsa and bean dip with mushrooms and onions were delivered moments after. The salsa was nice, though needed salt...and the chips were on the older side. Bean dip was warm and tasted great with the mushrooms and onions mixed in. The server was very considerate while my friend and I eyed the large menu discussing all the options our stomachs were interested in. I settled on the burrito de chile verde and my friend had the carne asada taco plate. Food came roughly 15 minutes later, piping hot and with generous portions. I'm well aware this is authentic "Americanized" Mexican food, so I'm reviewing from that perspective. In this context, the food was very well prepared and tasted fresh. The pork in my burrito was tender, heavily sauced and cheesy-melty, wrapped in a fresh tortilla, topped with a lightly flavored chili verde sauce. Beans tasted homemade, though they could use a little more salt or garlic. Rice was a little dry but still edible, especially mixed with the beans, sauce and burrito. Would have loved some more sour cream or guacamole, but overall the meal was very filling and satisfying.

My wife had the 2 Chiles Rellenos combo. She said that her meal was excellent. We're from California and have been lamenting not having a go to spot for Mexican food. Not anymore. We both agreed that we've found a new favorite.

My wife ordered a chile rellano and an enchilda. I ordered camarones diabla, one of my favorite dishes. My wife had a coke and I had water. My wife really enjoyed her food, and there was plenty of it, as she brought some home. In my dish, the shrimp were nice and plump, which was great, and the sauce was flavorful, though not as good as at another place I frequent. There were small pieces of mushroom, but there were also a lot of strips of onion, which I'm not a fan of. Just my personal taste. They charge $3.50 for a soda, and for that price, my wife asked for a refill to go. She thought our server was perhaps a bit displeased that she made this request, but we feel that it is reasonable, given the price tag for soda that comes from a machine. All in all, we enjoyed our experience at La Cabanita, and will return, we happen to be in the area (we live in Star).

My wife and I stopped in on a Sunday for lunch before heading to church. I would rate them 3.5 stars. One of the problems, and it may be ongoing because my wife experienced it when she came here last, is that the AC does not seem to work well. It is uncomfortably warm, so much so that we opted to sit on the patio, which thankfully had a nice breeze and was in the shade. The service was good enough. I was helped by a young woman that served me well, except she did not seem to hear me well, and I am normally known for a loud voice, though it is very low. She kept missing what I was saying and I ended up feeling like I was practically yelling at her. I told her that my wife wanted a drink but I wanted water, but she charged us for two drinks. I had a Fire Chicken bowl with black beans, rice, cheese, guacamole, and salsa. The chicken was a little chewy but generally flavorful. My wife had the steak taco meal with rice and beans. They don't seem to offer corn tortillas which I would prefer, but her steak was very tender and flavorful. I would probably get that next time. So, all in all I had a good experience, with a small hiccup when ordering, generally good food, but uncomfortable atmosphere due to the AC not working well. I will come here again, though most likely just for takeout.

Cafe Rio - Forgot the side and this may look large but it was a tiny burrito compared to the normal portions we're use to from the same restaurant.

While we were waiting on friends, the apps we ordered early took forever. This was a theme that would continue through out the afternoon. The food took forever. The tables sat around us ordered after us and were done eating by the time any of ours arrived. They forgot one of the burritos ordered and tried to claim it's because they ran out of that specific meat. It was way too slow to run out of anything. Server was nice, but the kitchen and food was just so insanely slow. Despite having to wait forever, once it showed up, it was okay. Not great, not terrible, just ok. I'm not saying I won't come back, I'm just saying I know what to expect. There are better Mexican restaurants in Caldwell, and a much better one in Kuna that I'd rather go to.
