The instructor has over 35 years of instruction experience and is very kind and patient. The class atmosphere is very welcoming to anyone, never do you feel pushed beyond your limits or feel like your competing against other students. Once upon a time, I fell in love with a photograph of this exotic, lovely, dark belly dancer. Years…read morelater, I found out her name, and then I looked up her style/type of belly dancing. Her name isn't important here, but as I started to read her biography, I knew she studied American Tribal Style (ATS) as a big part of her bellydance fusion baseline. I read further and found that she had studied Fat Chance Belly Dance (FCBD) ATS in particular. I went to a restaurant up in Seattle to see some bellydance performances...I knew there would be more traditional styles represented, but it seemed like a fun thing to do. Then this trio of dancers came into view. A tall woman with great poise, a tiny woman with an imp-like smile, and a man....a genie!! Yes, there was a genie on the dance floor! I had never seen ATS in person, and I was flat-out AMAZED. I loved their style, their pose, their HUGE smiles and the fun they were having! Afterward, I spoke to them (and Nancy Brown, unbeknown st to me) about classes. I started looking into instructors in the Seattle area because there weren't FECUND ATS in my South Sound area, and stumbled into one of Nancy's Seattle classes, with a couple references from other area (both professional and student) dancers. Since day one I was hooked! I don't know whether to start with the style itself, the costuming or the class's style is a codified set of cued movements drawn from many other styles of dance. This enables dancers to have a mealtime "discussion" while dancing with one another, even up to dancing in large groups, with different people taking the lead position and "leading the conversation". It's a very interesting dynamic that I enjoy very much and keeps my mind engaged. The costuming is modest but beautiful and lavish as well. Exotic, sultry, and not outside my comfort zone! As time has continued, Nancy has added Tacoma classes, which is really nice for the South Sound students. I usually attend the Seattle classes due to a schedule conflict, but there is no quality difference between the two, just some different students. I do try to get a Tacoma class when I can though doesn't need more dancing in their life? Everyone is very supportive of one another. This is very important for me; I do not learn well in a negative environment and Ucanto is far from that. Every Sunday I look forward to the smiling faces, the laughing, the dancing, and the learning that occurs. My boyfriend, a professional performer himself, loves to watch us dance. Others tell us how much they love to watch us dance too. I've asked them why. The answers are mostly about how pretty we are (costuming), how pretty our dance was (technique and style), but more often than not the comments focus on our smiles and genuine fondness for one another. This is my dance family, come join us.

Nancy, of uncanto bellydance, helps break down the moves so you can learn them easily. She is always willing to take time out to answer questions and help you with your body position and technique. The flexibility class was great and so are the other classes I've tried- even ones that were definitely above my skill level. They offer a wide range of time frames for classes. Classes are posted two weeks in advance and do fill up quick but you have a good chance of getting off the wait list. The owner Alyssa and the other instructor I've seen are both super encouraging and refused to let me give up/watch from the side lines and gave tips on how to adapt moves to my skill level. I especially appreciated it in a particular class where I didn't think I was physically capable of a particular move and was able to get it with some assistance. I'll definitely be back and I also love that the classes in a package don't expire, which is great since its hard for me to find classes that fit around my work schedule and other classes. The class sizes are great (8 max for most classes) and the students have all been supportive and friendly.

Easy to find location, easy to find parking, nice…read morewood floors, just enough room to dance but not so big as to dilute the festive atmosphere, great music from a DJ that plays professional recordings that span a variety of styles while staying true to the roots of jazz, a sweet hostess, savory food and beverage, no cliques, no rockstars, and exceptionally good floorcraft (which is saying a lot coming from a tanguero). Sounds like I'm talking about a milonga, but no, this is actually a swing dance. If you live south of Seattle and like to dance to traditional jazz, this is the place to be on Thursday nights.

I called The Toy Box and the spoke with the owner. She invited me to the studio the following week to try out a class & ask all the questions I needed. When I arrived I was greeted by the owner who instructs all the classes. The other women in the class greeted me too, and they all were encouraging and welcoming. The prices for classes were affordable. I signed up for 4 classes a month (once a week). That was 2 years ago and I still look forward to going to my weekly class at the Toy Box. You can sign up for multiple classes a week. The studio does not have windows and is private. Students are on their own pole for the whole hour. Classes are limted to 7 students Due to small classes the instructor is able to provide one on one instruction. Classes focus on teaching the sport of pole dance with a focus on acrobatics on a verticle pole. Individual instruction is given based on a students level: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. The instructor and other students are encouraging. The other women in the classes are fun supportive and at times silly. I had hardly no upper body strength and absolutely no formal dance or gynamstic ability when I walked into the studio my first day. The instructor started me with the basics, gave me tips on what I was doing in error and making moves more difficult for myself, and encouraged me. Through pole fitness I gained muscle tone, strenght, flexibility, confidence (it feels incredible when you are able to master a challenging move and do combos). I also gained friends and a sense of empowerment. The studio has offered special event workshops that are in addition to classes for students who are interested. These workshops are at the Toy Box and hosted by Pole Fitness Champions. The most recent being Veronica Solimano and Natasha Wang (have you youtubed these women, wow!). The classes here are great for anyone who wants to learn pole fitness, improve skills they may already have and be in a supportive fun enviornment.

She will try to get you to buy matching lingerie with everyone so she can make more of a profit off of you. Not to mention, not everyone is very comfortable wearing lingerie at public events!
