This place back in the day was great. The woman in back cooking over an old stove. food and service could not be any better. Now it has changed drastically over the years. The young lady on Wednesday 5/14/26 hung up on my husband because he was taking too long with his order. She was extremely rude which made the ordering twice as hard. He then called back and gave his order to the older woman with no problem. The kicker was that when my husband went to pick up the order, there was another customer there who was so irate and telling the young woman how rude she was. The young woman just walked away. The older woman pretended to not speak English. (She does) The other customer did speak Spanish to them but that made no difference. He told my husband that he has never been treated with so much disrespect And will never come back. The food... far from what it used to be And not worth the aggravation. Taco Ticos. Which I believe when translated means Taco Tacos :) This was one of my favorite comfort food spots during my nine year stint in Newburgh. A former student and I had lunch there my first time and it just blew me away. They have lots of things on the menu but my go to was always the hard shell tacos with everything (seasoned beef, grilled onions, cheese and lettuce) and the rice and beans. The rice was delicious and always had big hunks of sausage in it. You piled the beans on top and had an incredible taco side dish. The tacos are delicious, something about the combo of each ingredient always made me smile. They also have a famous hot sauce which I always dumped liberally on every taco. I must admit and I am sure locals feel the same, that the original ownership had a better product. It was a husband and wife team that sold the business. Despite that fact, this doesn't stop me from jerking my wheel towards Newburgh when passing on the highway. Taco Tico will always have a tractor beam effect on me. read more

The two stars are for the pleasant lady who took my order. It's a hole in the wall building kind of reminiscent of an ice cream stand. Terrible pulling in/out or parking. Cool idea but not executed very well. Pretty dingy tables inside. Exterior can use a facelift. On to the food. I love empanadas normally these were flat more like a steamrolled shell with a teaspoon of pretty greasy bland meat. Come on, it's not hard to make empanadas.....these were definitely NOT worth the $2.50 per chewy hard shell. Their yellow sludgy sauce that they give on the side was the only thing helping me choke down this outer edge. If these were made today I would be shocked, they were not fresh. I had a serious yen for pork and so I came from 3 exits away odered- Pernil dinner, burrito Supreme, tostones, and some empanadas. 20 min. I go wait in the car because it's getting cold and blustery. A bit later the girl knocks on my window. She has my food. I say thanks and pull away. Got home. No empanadas. Sad face. Call and ask for a refund for just the empanadas. But she doesn't know how to do that on the "Square" payment app. So SHE BRINGS TO MY HOUSE along with a slice of tres leches cake as apology. Would I prefer that didn't happen? Sure. I'm going to rate this place appropriately from my experience because the food is pretty darn good, however in light of a local news article about this place being one of the worst in health code violations (back in 2007) specifically, "Preparing chicken in the bathroom" has kept me far away from this place. Best Tacos I've had between Poughkeepsie and Newburgh so far! It's a very small location but everything on the menu is seasoned to perfection. I was questioning the sautéed onions on the taco at first glance, but after tasting the marriage of meat, cheese, onions, and homemade hot sauce I couldn't understand why I never had a taco like this before. I strongly suggest getting an empanada (meat pie) with every meal. It's a great added bonus for your soul. The staff is very friendly and the wait is not very long, even with a large line. As of May 2018 they now except credit cards. Since I was told about this spot in March, I've gone at least 1-2 times a week for lunch. Don't hesitate like did. I can not believe this. A Spanish joint can't make Spanish food. Last month I had a craving for shrimp casadila but to my surprise they don't offer it there. The lady was nice and smiled a lot but I didn't go there for her smiles... I am a foodie person and I wanted to eat something really good that day. Being a Spanish food place I really don't know why they offer casadilas there !?! Because they didn't have casadilas, I ordered enchiladas. The food was done and prepared in the back kitchen so I didn't see them making it. I waited like 10 minutes and the food was given to me wrapped up in to go box. When I got to my car with the food, I drove away to a closest parking lot to eat. I opened the plastic container, and....? I couldn't believe what I saw. Instead of 3 beef enchiladas I got a mixed bowl of something poured into my box. It was like a thick soup with cheddar cheese melted on top of all of it ! What a crazy place. I drove back there immediately and showed it to that lady and asked where were my enchiladas because what was in the food container it wasn't it. She said that I waited to long before I started eating it and it was so hot that it melted. Really ? The soft taco tortilla melted? I never seen nothing like it ! I had not visited Taco Tico in about a year but was passing through Rtes 87/84 and had a craving. I ordered two beef and cheese empanadas and a burrito supreme. Yikes! Was so excited to try their tacos. Every time we drove by, we promised ourselves we would try. I am always on the hunt for good tacos and burritos. The servers were nice. But oh how it went down hill from there. Skimpy on fillings. Lots of bare naked taco shell interior. Noticeably uneven on the fillings between the 3 hard taco shells. Still not a deal breaker to me if its good. But then there was the cheese. At least it was posing as cheese. A cheese food. Honestly, and I pride myself on knowing my cheeses, it wasn't cheddar and certainly not any of the huge variety of lovely white crumbly queso fresco or blanco cheeses that would have been appropriate and luscious. Not even a jack or longhorn or colby. It definitely was an odd and cheap choice of cheese of the velveeta family. The cooked opinions on top in what I assume was some sort of salsa or onion gravy had little flavor and just wet the whole thing down into a drippy mess making that "almost cheese" stick to your fingers and drip down the underside of your forearms. I did like their choices of sodas "Jarritos". Thank goodness. Something good to wash it down. We also tried an enchilada. Was a sad flippy floppy wet thing again with that velveeta type of cheese food that wasn't even close to melty. Cold in the middle. Its very sad to write this. The place is not the cleanest in the world, but they do have a few somewhat tasty dishes, though it's more Puerto Rican/Domican styled fare than Mexican. Tacos, which they are named after, are OK, but you can get much better on Broadway over at Los Portales. And, the prices aren't that cheap here either. Love love love me some Tico Tacos! Been eating here for years. The location leaves something to be desired but the food is very tasty. I always get yellow rice w pork sausage and a meat pie. The rice is perfect here. 98% of the time its very fluffy and fresh. My gf always gets the taco with everything. She loves the onions they use and says they make the taco. The best thing about tico taco is their homemade hot sauce. One of the best I've ever had! Has a nice heat to it that will make your scalp sweat but not burn your tongue off. As far as their past health issues, i see no issue. I've been going to Tico Taco for the past 7 years consistently and have never gotten sick or known someone who has. My only complaint is I wish they would open a bigger place as it gets a little cramped when busy. A place like this with so many loyal customers could definitely pull it off. read more

Sorry Taco Tico's but I'm very disappointed. I rarely take that route into Newburgh, I've driven past dozens the times and never really had the time to stop, my sister had recommended it, today I wasn't in a hurry so I thought I would stop for the first time and try it out. Didn't know what to order so I just picked the Supreme Burrito, I like burritos. I requested no onions. I noticed that there were two different prices, on the menu board behind the counter ( I can't remember exactly what it was, maybe it was like eight dollars and change?) and on the laminated menus on the counter it was $6.25 and I was really happy about that (Fantastic! great price!) and somehow I just assumed that the laminated menu superseded the menu board behind the counter. I'm not a Mexican food aficionado but when she set the plate on the table I was a little surprised, it looked different than what I'm used to but I was OK. Surprised there was a ladle of (whole) beans (at the top of the tri-folded tortilla, as others have mentioned) usually I think it seems with Mexican food the beans are kinda mashed ("retried"). There was a toothpick like another reviewer mentioned but thank goodness I didn't bite it. I thought it was "OK" I think the combination of ground beef and sour cream kind of really hits you in a good place. When I ordered and I noticed there were two prices I was surprised to see the price that was printed out my receipt was different from the other two prices and I told myself I was going to ask her about it after I finished eating. I did ask her and she pointed put at the bottom of the menu it says, "*PRICES SUBJECT TO CHANGE*". (what, when determines how much the prices change?) and she said something to me and I'm sorry I can't remember what she said verbatim but it was something about how prices have changed in January and they hadn't had a chance to update the menus yet but I was not satisfied by that explanation, there were THREE different prices and just now when I looked at the menu here on Yelp it's $6.25 so that's kind of four. I think I would be inclined to let a 20 cent discrepancy slide but $1.74 is a big difference. After having read the reviews here on Yelp and after my experience I'm sorry to say I figure that $1.74 was my tip and I won't be going back. OK here we go- I went here this evening because I've heard nothing but good things about the food here (my brother's family loves it, a cousin loves it) and I like good Mexican food. My wife and I ordered a chicken fajita, an enchilada and a few hard shell taco's as a "sample" dinner to share. As I was eating I'm waiting for the "great" taste to magically appear but it never did. The fajita was bland, the enchilada was watery (?) and the taco's were bland with barely warm meat. I've been asking through my social media about this place and everyone tells me the yellow rice and beans, meat pie, pork chops is where it's at but I don't know...
