I love this taco place, so many choices. I especially enjoy the el pastor tacos, I always try them at Avery taco place I go. They have a lot of options and specialty tacos and even an el pastor burger that I am dying to try soon. They have a really good salsa bar too. Great Mexican food! The enchiladas Mexico were good and tasty! The alambre tacos were fresh, tender and delicious, the gordita was crispy... I would have liked a bit more meat but it was flavorful! I am months late in writing this review but, was somehow reminded of the interesting artwork inside Taco Mesa. There was Day of the Dead artwork, Virgin Mary, and other artsy things on the inside. As for the food and service, they did ok. The cashier's priority seems to be to move the lunch lines along so you may or may not get friendly service. For food, the guac and chips were solid. Guac tasted fresh and the chips were standard. My entree was a plate of cheese enchiladas, beans, and rice and tasty. Seating is in the covered outdoor patio which reminded me of Wahoo's with a bunch stickers and such on the wall. Food: . Each taco is 3-5 bucks which is kinda expensive. But I would say their size is bigger than the normal street tacos. Got the: blackened chicken - chicken is cut into thin strips and very dry. Not much flavor. Would pass on this al pastor - meat is tender and flavorful without being oily. They add some pineapple on top as well and the sweetness isnt overwhelming. Definitely a favorite battered fish - the fish was good. But my tiff is with the cabbage. The cabbage was super bitter and cut into very big thick pieces. Great ayce salsa bar. I'm a huge fan of pickled carrots but theirs is different. Its soaked in some sort of tangy oil with seasoning and bits of cauliflower. Interesting but a fan! Seating: outdoors but theres heaters. Yelp once again hits the bull's-eye for me. Went right from the dog park in Huntington Beach was trying to find a place with an open patio and lots of shade and some thing to grub on while getting out of all the traffic on PCH and I found this place on yelp. I filtered out open with a patio and dog friendly. The place is super clean and the shade was magnificent and they even had nice menus to look at, instead of using your phone. After driving to a different taco spot and leaving because it looked absolutely filthy and unhygienic, yelped other restaurants in the area and found this cute place! The restaurant is clean and very inviting with both indoor and outdoor seating. We ordered a few different tacos to try - steak, carnitas and al pastore. Personal favorite was definitely the steak - something about the seasoning and the way the meat is cooked makes it very tasty and flavourful. Another bonus - lots of sides! Many tacos places that I've tried before are limited to radish and limes, but Taco Mesa has a whole gamut of different items such as cilantro, onions, pickled radishes, etc. Because who doesn't love extra sides! If you can't finish your food, they do provide takeaway boxes and bags and their service was really great. Definitely would recommend and will be returning for sure! read more

"The OC's" version of a taco joint! This is the ultimate icon for Taco Nights and such concepts as "Taco Tuesdays" and the like. My friend visiting from the east coast described this place as a "surfer taco joint with a twist of heart attack and two table spoons of gas." He loved it. I personally, have never really cared for this place. However, it was always one of those "go to" places for the off-night out during the week. While my buddy from the DC appreciated this place, it has a somewhat more "whatervers" feeling for me. Taco bar is a deal. Decent Taco night. Never liked much of anything else. I didn't have such a great experience the first time, but was in the area again today, so came back. What was wrong? + Tacos are T-I-N-Y. For $3, please put more than a mouthful of meat in there. I ate around most of the chicken and ate three bites of lettuce and a dabble of queso fresco. + Chips are bland. So even though the baja fish is deep fried well, they don't have the tartar sauce to compound and bring it to the 5 star level. Chili verde- Do you love chili? Spiciness? You can't handle it? It's okay, it's not spicy lol. Salsa? Yay. Al pastor- This one was the better one I had. Flavorful and delish. Jalapeno poppers- I don't know what they're actually called but my friend ordered it and I just ate it. I love deep fried stuff. Not spicy either because the seeds aren't there! I've been coming here for years. I guess it time to update this review. I got a langosta burrito to go. When I got home (I don't live far) it was a cold gelatinous mess. Whatever sauce they use had turned to gelatin and the whole thing was nasty. I tossed it in the sink, it belongs in the garbage. Healthy (healthier) Mexican food and a pretty decent spot for Taco Tuesdays. For just $1 you can get a taco with your choice of meat including: al pastor, chile verde, Baja (tilapia), carnitas pibil, carnitas (fried), papa en adobo and vegetarian. And these are full size tacos too, not those tiny street tacos. I recommend the al pastor and carnitas. If they added asada to the $1 menu, I would instantly upgrade them to 4 stars or higher. They also have a great salsa bar that has spicy red, smoked chipotle, chili verde and avocado salsas to choose from. Chips are extra though. 3.5 stars read more

Average Mexican food delivered from high expectations. I was excited to try this place out based off the reviews but it did not live up to the hype. I went with one of the most popular items which was the Baja Fish Taco. The Taco was good but nothing great. It reminded me of a floppy fish stick and was hoping the cabbage would make up for it but it didn't have the flavor to pull through. The chips were over cooked and stale although the guacamole we got to go with it was delicious. I also got to try the verde chicken enchilada and that was better than the Fish Tacos. It had a little spice to it with great flavor. I called ahead to order and got there before they said it would be ready and they already had it bagged for me which was great. Customer service seemed as good as it could be for a to go order. They also had a salsa bar with 3 different salsa's and other condiments to put on your taco's. However, parking lot super small so expect to park far if you come during rush hour. I was not a fan of the cleanliness here but it is part of how busy this place can get. I always ask questions and he always answers me right away with recommendations which I really appreciate. FOOD: Love the food here! I always order carne asada tacos and chicken tacos with the rice and beans. really really really good. The pickles bar is really good here you can add so much flavor to your meal with it as well. Taco Mesa is definitely one of the top spots in the area. The steak tacos are the best around by far. Tried the Chile verde tacos which were good as well. I also had the shredded beef tacos which had really good flavor but they were served in hard shell tortillas that weren't great in my opinion. They ended up kinda chewy and I'm not into chewy tacos. I think I went here back in college, and even then, my plebeian taste buds told me that this joint is no bueno. My little brain was tricked into believing that Taco Mesa was going to be the mecca of tacos in Costa Mesa. My friends and I ordered an array of tacos- mine included a fish, al pastor, and carne asada taco for variety. As I bit into each taco, I was amazed at how tasteless each filling was. I had to drench my tacos in their salsa to create some sort of flavor- but really, everything tasted really meh. If I had to choose, I would maybe get the fish taco again? But that would only happen I was forced to come here against my will. The whole outside patio is also a fiasco during Taco Tuesday. Seating is limited. Authentic Mexican food? Nope. The beef was flavorful and the crunch to the taco was perfect and not hard at all. The fish was battered and fried, but you could still taste the freshness of the ocean. And the al pastor wasn't greasy at all. Super good and super stuffed!! It was really busy when we arrived for lunch so the tables were a little dirty and the salsa bar was a little messy. A hole in the wall that tastes like a five star restaurant. They have home made tortillas and my favorite shrimp tacos to date. Yes, I've been to Javier's and even the Michelin rated Taco Maria. This is STILL my favorite place for shrimp tacos. Makes sense as the owner is a former chef of a very famous Mexican restaurant. The only minus is the lack of seating and the cold outdoor space. This is why we usually get our orders to go, but would much rather eat there due to their nice salsa bar. read more
