Nice ambiance, cool interior and ceiling painting. Very friendly server. But the service was soooooo slow and when we got our food finally it was cold and flavorless. I had to ask for salt... When we got up to pay our bill we noticed the server was sitting at the booth right behind us with someone and there were a bunch of Tito's minis on the table. I don't care if you are winding down your shift, but don't make me wait. And especially don't make me wait for terrible food. I called the restaurant a few days later and spoke to Richard, the manager. Not once did he apologize, but had a million excuses "you shouldn't have been seated so late (8.31 p.m.), "our staff can drink at the end of their shift" and my favorite "yeah, we are having problems with that new chef - things haven't been up to standard" SO WHY ARE YOU KNOWINGLY SELLING SUBSTANDARD FARE!?!?!?!? read more

Came here last night to order take out for the family. The location is nice, very well taken care of, and the decor is great. The customer service was also great. Everyone was friendly. I ordered a taco salad with asada and no sour cream. Unfortunately, it came with a lot of sour cream. Regardless, it was good. Smaller than I would expect for the price, but it was full of flavor. A very authentic Mexican restaurant in a strip mall, but all the decor made you feel like you were in Mexico. Parking is easy and location is easy to find. This has to be one of the most beautifully decorated Mexican restaurants I have ever been in. Everywhere you look, so pretty and colorful. I came here for a first visit and ordered my food to go since it was only me eating. I came back again for a second visit and this time brought the whole family. We were greeted warmly and seated quickly. I went with the taco salad with chicken, my hubby had the Al Pastor taco plate and my daughter enjoyed her vegetarian plate. The chicken was tender and seasoned well which made my salad delicious and filling. Hubby stated his tacos were tasty as well. Service was very good and our drink cups were constantly filled and they checked in a couple of times to make sure we were enjoying our meal. Gracias Taco King for a flavor filled meal. Was craving Mexican food in the area and my sister mentioned this place. We decided to give it a try. Located right next to a Cigar store, it was definitely a bit offputting. The interior was beautifully decorated though- the chairs and walls were decked out with art. It was very beautiful, as if I was transported to Mexico. Unfortunately the food and service didn't live up to the external beauty. Food was a bit steep for very little meat. Additionally, the service wasn't the nicest as the waiter made an offhand racist comment and asking for more chips got us a stare. Probably won't be coming back. read more

We stopped in for dinner while in town for work. People kept rolling in but the staff worked hard to be attentive to everyone and we got our huge meal in under 15 minutes. I ranked our Molcajete higher than my husband did, I really really loved the sauce. We shared the sea and land (or surf & turf) molcajete and it was really good. The whole space was beautiful and we just kept looking around pointing out all of the decor. The chips were never ending and we tried a couple of salsas from their salsa bar. We are local residents. We used to go to Taco King all the time, but over the past year we have only gone 3 times because the food quality has been disappointing. The refried beans taste like they are more processed, salsa is different and the meat dishes taste dried out like the meat has been deep fried before they have been put on the grill. I wrote the owner directly the first time I experienced it last year, but no reply. Tried again a month after that; disappointed again. Then about 6 months passed and thought we would give it one more try, but were again disappointed. Very sad...it used to be one of our favorite places and the people so nice....but not going back anymore. read more

Good food, bad service is the way I'd summarize it. Went in on an early afternoon and ordered a simple lunch: shrimp enchiladas and a Diet Coke. Only two other diners were there besides myself. After waiting a long time, I finally asked the serverr where was my lunch. Lovely little Mexican spot, chuck full of decorations will keep you looking around until your food arrives. Had the special of the day, chicken, Molay, enchiladas with rice and beans, quite good, seasoned rice was really delicious, beans were OK, but a little runny, I think they were trying to make them a bit fancy by doing a purée thing, but I found it less enjoyable. Used to Love This Place - But the Owner Lost Our Business for Good We've been loyal customers of Taco King for years, always enjoying the food and the excellent service from our regular waitress. She knows us well--we usually order the same thing--and even joked when she seated us this time about how "easy" we are because of our usual routine. It was a friendly comment and just highlighted how often we come in. Unfortunately, that's where the good experience ended. Our regular waitress wasn't available after seating us, and the owner ended up taking over. "Helping" is a generous term for what followed. After finishing our meal in a nearly empty restaurant, we waited ten minutes trying to get someone's attention for our check and a to-go container. A young employee acknowledged our request, then went to help a group of people who had just walked in--and never came back. We waited another 5-10 minutes before finally catching the owner's attention. He brought the to-go container but once again forgot about the check, moving on to other tasks. After 20 minutes of waiting, I walked up to the counter and said, "We've been waiting a long time for our check." The owner responded with a curt, dismissive "I'll get it," offering no apology. When my lunch companion noted that we had been waiting 20 minutes, the owner called him rude--still no apology, no accountability. When the owner finally brought the check, he aggressively slapped it onto the table and snapped, "Give me your credit card so you can get out of here." The check was wrong, and he refused to admit the mistake. Our regular waitress--who wasn't even serving us--stepped in and kindly fixed it. Throughout this entire experience, the owner remained rude, defensive, and confrontational. He even told us he didn't want our business anymore. He got his wish. We've supported this place for years, recommending it to others despite the high prices, because we believed in the quality and service. But after this, we're done. The food simply isn't worth dealing with an owner who treats loyal customers this badly read more

Came for lunch right around 1245 and wasn't busy, was able to sit and take my time. The staff were all courteous, helpful and patient. The food was good, I'd say the carne asada in the taco was a bit dry on its own and I wish the pieces were larger instead of diced sized. I really enjoy the Lengua taco, very flavorful and didn't need anything added to it I'll order more of these in the future. Pastor I can't say stood out as great but it was good and same with the carnitas. The asada cheese fries were ok, cheese was thoroughly melted and I'd say everything was evenly spread, where some places might just pile everything in the center. My only complaint but also I don't blame them at all is that the prices seemed a little higher than what I think it should be for what was ordered, but with economy the way it is and everything else that effects it I wouldn't hold it against them. Overall, a very nice lunch and I would recommend this place to others in the future. read more

A Saturday visit to SLO and wanted to try something new. Looking on Yelp and I came across the Taco King and it's solid 4+ star review. The photos looked delicious so we decided to give it a try. First impression was that they put a lot of work into creating a fun yet authentic atmosphere...despite being in a strip mall it had the feel of an authentic Mexican cantina. The complimentary chips and salsa were fresh and delicious and perfectly salted. Feeling a little worse for the wear I went with the Menudo and my daughter went with the Chile Relleno plate. The menudo was solid, very large and had lots of honeycomb tripe. The broth was not quite as rich as I like but that's likely more of a personal preference and not a reflection of the quality flavor. My daughter loved her cheesy, saucy Chile Relleno plate and ate the entire thing. Service was fast and friendly but took a little longer for the food to come out than I would have liked considering how they weren't that busy. Nitpicks aside this was an outstanding choice for Mexican cuisine. read more

One of the best burritos I have ever had. It's so hard to find a California burrito outside of Southern California, and this one is so good. Well....., my family and I have been to this Establishment several times and have had a great experience for the most part. Good food always! HOWEVER ON 1/4/2025...., it was the most outrageous & disappointing experience my family and I experienced! The server said ; " "If you don't have enough money..., don't come and eat here!!!" They over charged a party of 9, and were split on two tables... they wanted to add a $45 split fee for an additional table!! They charge Pennies, nickels and dimes for extra salsa! read more
