We drive in from Hudsonville for the super wet burritos. I grew up on the north end of GR and have been enjoying their food since my highschool days. I got a couple of burritos, and while they were very good, they wouldn't put any salsa in the burrito or any sauce in the burrito. So I've got rice beans cheese and meat, but when I ask him to put salsa inside he said "I can't." So I bought salsa and chips and the salsa was delicious and I just put it on the burrito myself. What's up with that? Also they don't have pico de gallo, what kind of Mexican place doesn't have pico de gallo? I love their food, but it's always dry. When there is no sauce or salsa. Tacky and dive-like? Yes. Thoroughly un-Mexican food? For sure. Do I care? No. Leaving my mother's home in EGR and heading back up to Traverse City means that in approximately two-and-one-half hours I will be eating either a wet burrito or dry burrito with mild sauce in the comforts of my home. I can lick the wet burrito sauce from the plate without embarrassment; I can groan and moan in gastronomic pleasure. Taco Boy is without a doubt one of my favorite meals from Grand Rapids. Okay, if you're looking for a place to take a Prom date to, this isn't the place. However, Taco Boy has everything else to offer to the hungry customer. Some of my favorite items on the menu are: the tacos, tostadas, and the Super Wet meat and bean burrito. Classier than Taco Bell with three-times the taste, the food here does not taste fast-food-like (although it could be considered fast food). Tuesdays they offer a 99 cent menu and their homemade hot sauce is the best. Overall, the decor makes Taco Boy a dive, however the food makes it a 5 Star Restaurant. read more

I can honestly say that I have been going to Taco Boy my entire life. I remember going as a kid and I still stop by whenever I'm visiting my family in Grand Rapids. It's great hangover food and you can't beat the prices. Having been to Mexico several times however, I can say that this is about the most unauthentic Mexican food I've ever had. That's ok. It's what I've dubbed, "Michigan Mexican". It's basically a loose interpretation of what folks in Michigan imagine Mexican food to taste like. While the food is pretty dependable, I'd like to take a moment to comment on the restaurant itself. The place is a dive. Not in that cool, kind of funky way, but in the wobbly seat, tacky menu board, and one step away from being closed down by the health department way. I'm quite certain they've opened other locations throughout the city, so I'm just not sure why their first born has been so sadly neglected. read more

I have been a loyal client for years, I dont know what has happened, but food quality is going down, and their customer service is awful. I struggled with getting the order taker to understand my order, it was read back to me 4 times, and the last time it sounded correct. When I was handed the ticket, it was entirely incorrect. I asked them to correct it and was told that I should have changed it when it was read back to me, and I was the person that did not understand. I left after paying and without food as I did not want what they were preparing. I will dispute the charge with Discover. I will NEVER GO BACK. read more

I'm a big fan of fast casual dining. These kinds diner/dive-type places often serve Cheap, Tasty, and Inventive meals (plus I don't have to fork out tip money!). Taco Boy achieves the first 2 adjectives. While on a sight-seeing tour of Grand Rapids, my friend, a native, highly recommended the place, so we stopped in for lunch. Its not surprising Taco Boy is popular with the locals for its moderately priced mexican food. I ordered a regular taco, which came in a hard shell with meat, cheese, and lettuce, and a spicy pork burrito with beans (which cost extra...). The taco was alright, but I wish it had been spicer. The pork in the burrito was probably the best part of the whole meal, using what they called green sauce gave it a really nice flavor. But for me, with its simple salsas, soupy refried beans, and average meat, Taco Boy's food lacked the flavor and spice that I have come to crave from our friends south of the border. If you live in or near GR, definitly try Taco Boy, they offer cheap, filling meals that are better than Taco Bell or Del Taco. However, they are still miles away from the corn tortilla mexican street tacos of Detroit. read more

Staggering back to a hotel drunk as a skunk is a great way to spend a vacation, at least for me. But eventually the drunk muchies caught up to me, and I found a taco joint to satisfy my cravings, and I gotta tell ya, it hit the spot. Not knowing what this place was, I just gurgled out the first thing I noticed, 2 beef tacos with hot salsa. Grabbed them for about $5, then walked back to my hotel and ate them. The beef was cooked perfectly, a rarity for a taco joint, and the salsa stood out and lifted the whole taco to another level. The cheese and lettuce were a nice touch, and added texture to what would otherwise be a dry taco. I have ate at Taco Boy since 1969 before my mom died of cancer. She luved eating here and was a good friend of the owner. I have enjoyed 100s of burritos and tacos over the years. The food has changed slightly over the years such as not as spicy hot on the green pork as it once was. But it is still the BEST AMERICAN MEXICAN FOOD IN GRAND RAPIDS MICHIGAN!!! Matter of fact I do plan on eating some Taco Boy TODAY!!! All I can say is give it a try. It is so much better and a huge bargain compared to other American Mexican food places and bars. So much flavor and such large servings. I feel that 99% of the people that at least give it a try will give it many more tries. It is a small place and the workers are never rude or pushy. No matter how busy it is they are always friendly. read more

I've been hearing about this place for years so I finally gave it a try. It's not bad. It's not high quality, not the best food and not at all authentic. However for the price it's great. It won't break the bank. It seemed as though everyone was ordering the hard shell tacos. I actually thought they weren't that good. I did really enjoy the wet burrito though. It's excellent for well under $10. They have a great red sauce too. I also tried the bean and cheese burrito. This is another great choice This place is easy, fast and cheap. Been going here my whole life. Always cheap always fast always good. I wish I could find something similar to their hot sauce at the store but so far no such luck, they must be making it with unicorn blood and other obscure ingredients because it's out of this world. They sell bottles now for 5$ but that's a bit pricy as far as I'm concerned. Don't expect authentic Mexican food. Only thing I wish they would change is just get rid of the dining area and have an in door and an out door this place is way to small and way to busy for a seating area. Been eating here for more than 30 years, including once a week for most of my teens and early twenties. There was a bit of a downturn a few years ago, but they've turned it around again. The food is very tasty and the portions are good. Their hot sauce is top notch. Not too hot, not too mild. I've tried most of the classic items on their menu, but keep going back to the taco meat burrito, the wet burrito, and their super cousins. Their refried beans have lost a step, but I think it's because they used to use lard. It is almost always busy, so don't count on eating in the restaurant. They only have 4 booths, so you have to get lucky to sit down. It's worth the wait for takeout, though. The reviews about their odd prices are on point, but I believe they have weird prices because they try to keep the prices tied to what the items actually cost. So yes, not everything ends in neat, round numbers, but they're not gouging you, either. My secret menu suggestion is to get the rice, open the dry burrito (with or without beans, with or without veggies), dump the whole thing in with a generous amount of their hot sauce, close it up and enjoy. Maybe they'll read this and will add a taco meat, bean, and rice burrito to the menu so I can finally stop wasting the styrofoam rice container. It is not an authentic Mexican experience, but it is a Grand Rapids institution going back 50 years. read more

I was born and raised in Grand Rapids, and lived only a mile or two away from Taco Boy. There was probably a time in my life that my family would get take-out from Taco Boy once a week. Are they authentic Mexican? No. Is the food amazing and I eat there AT LEAST once every time I go back to Grand Rapids? YES. Their refried beans are the bar by which I judge all refried beans. They are amazing. I could eat them every day. I wish I was eating them right now. The taco meat, I honestly don't know how they make it so tasty. My favorite things to get there are a taco meat burrito and the regular tacos. Then I order a side of beans, and slather it on the tacos or stick it inside the burrito and re-wrap it. (You can get a taco meat and bean burrito, but you will get less meat that way.) The interior of the restaurant hasn't changed for the 25 years I've been going there. Its old, but not grody. If you go in a month before any holiday, they will have some cheapy decorations up everywhere. There are always high school students working at the front. "No Shirt No Shoes No Service" and a doorbell will greet you as you walk in the door. There are only four booths and two small tables so you better be there for take-out. I hope none of this ever changes. If they ever remodel it will just not be the same. Anytime I visit GR now I drag everyone in my group to Taco Boy. I will then unashemedly drag them there again on the way out of town. If they don't like it, too bad, I'm driving. If I ever drove up to Grand Rapids and found that they were closed, I would probably just break down right there and cry. (And then I'd drive to the Alpine one....) Go to Taco Boy. Its cheap, fast, and delicious. If you don't love it, well, I don't think we could ever be friends. read more
