Even more tacky random Mexican stuff lined the walls, ceilings and wherever else it could be nailed to and the sounds of screaming kids welcomed us in. We didn't have a booking but got a table without a hassle, but I could see it being very busy in here during peak holiday times. We ordered a margarita sampler each, which was four different flavours of margarita in small glasses of (Lemon, Strawberry, Pine Lime and Mango). They were all very quite and didn't taste like there was much alcohol in them at all. After our recent travels around America the sight of queso on a menu resulted in that being quickly ordered. It had a lot more beans in it than anything else and not a lot of cheese, but it was quite nice and the chips that came with it were tasty. For main I ordered a soft taco combo plate, which were okay but nothing special. Someone else at our table ordered the fajitas which was quite a large dish and was rather tasty. I probably would not return to Panhandle, but if you're in the mood for what is probably the only (Tex) Mexican on Philip Island it's worth stopping in to.

It had chips and salsa which was what I needed, since I was somewhat tired of eating beef. Now that being said. This is the cheesiest Mexican food place on planet earth. If you could buy a cheap souvenir the owners have bought it and it now sits on their walls. There were mexican hats, texas license plates, cowboy pictures and about everything else possible. Wow... The service was actually good. Although we were the only people in the place, not a good sign at 6pm.

They still make the effort as if they have newly opened! The food was delicious, the service was great, and it's so family friendly! My little one (1.5yo) had her own menu and colouring pencils, she enjoyed her (healthy!) Kid's Fajitas meal and even when she got restless and was strolling around and dancing to the music (played at a suitable volume to create an atmosphere but still be able to have easy conversations), the team interacted with her in such a lovely manner. I'm glad we stopped here for dinner on our way into Bendigo from Melbourne. We were quite impressed with everything... you have a great team there! Tip: the drinks selection is pretty good - but they also offer BYO beer & wine Mon-Thurs. And the taco platter is yummy - you can mix it up and choose 3 different fillings (the slow cooked lamb was surprisingly my favourite!).

You could tell the chips were made with care and precision. I was wanting to order another plate. The first of our mains was the 1/2 baby chicken which was a large cut for one. I tend to eat the items on my plate singularly (I'm weird) but, this dish forced you to combine and I simply loved it!! The balance is obviously the main strength. The second main was the duck. I have NEVER had cooked at this high standard and the quince dressing was perfect with it. We were full after all this but we wanted to continue eating because the food was so delicious. I loved the chilli pineapple (with a one-punch) and ice cream sandwich, and the house made apple sorbet was very fresh.

I had a seared piece of barramundi in a crab broth with greens and coconut rice, so satisfying and the broth was spectacular. My friend had the lamb ribs which were well prepared, and a very large portion. The only thing that was a miss for us was her charred kale and purple sweet potato salad which had a dressing too sweet for our palates. The wait staff was very friendly and attentive, would highly recommend!!

The shop itself is very unassuming - a diamond in the rough. Juanita (or who I assume is Juanita? Should have asked! ... ) was very friendly. She made us feel very welcome and ensured we had everything we needed. We tried the taco mix, pork and chicken tacos. The tortillas were rustic. They come with an array of sides (& plenty of them!) including a pineapple/cucumber salsa, a cabbage slaw, some diced onions, coriander, tomatillo with avocado and chipotle sauce. There was also a couple of Juanita's home made sauces on the table to use. We enjoyed it all! Although quite full we couldn't resist trying the salted caramel Cheezecake. It was really delicious, thick and rich but well balanced with the addition of yoghurt, honey, bitter chocolate and praline served with it. This is a vegan option FYI! BTW - Juanita's sells delicious sauces and spices to take away ... we just had to grab one. We'll definitely head back.

The chicken mole was the best I've had in Oz, as were the corn tortillas - the latter had real flavor and must have been prepared by someone who has eaten real ones for many years in Mexico.
