It's nothing special, the ambience is terrible, but they are producing decent food within those limits, and it's probably fine by the middle-American palate. Jolly Roger is located in Port Clinton right on Lake Erie; I was expecting something ordinary or just a bit dated and boy was I wrong. The building is very modern and clean from the outside, white and angular with big windows. Inside white walls, rough hewn wooden tables and just the right amount of decor makes for a modern seaside feel, casual but also classy. The setup is fast casual, you order and pay up front at the counter, get a number for your table and then get your own drink at the service station. The menu is understandably very heavy on fish and seafood with a couple of other items. While there are the expected fried fish meals, but also oysters, shrimp and salmon, salads and even some tacos. The reason I came was of course for the fried fish, I decided on the Perch and Chips, which is $18. I grabbed some water, hot sauce and lemon and settled onto a table. The meal was brought out fresh and hot by a food runner in a couple of minutes. The meal was 4 nice sized perch fillets on top of a generous portion of fresh waffle fried potatoes with a side of tarter sauce. The fish were excellent, fresh and perfectly fried with a nice crispy cornmeal crust around the delicately fish; moist with a slight sweetness and perfect texture. The waffle fries were exceptional, fried to a crisp outside and tasty inside; usually fries at a seafood place are an afterthought, here they actually are well worth getting and eating. Even the tarter sauce was very nice, nothing special but creamy with a nice pickle contrast to add a little extra flavor. Usually when I see a place that has been around this long and has great reviews I am a bit let down when I give them a try; Jolly Rogers Seafood House exceeded my expectations in almost every way. Although set up as a fast casual restaurant with a typical fried seafood menu, the actual restaurant feels more upscale and modern with a great inside and a very nice patio looking out onto Lake Erie. The food is not cutting edge, but it is expertly prepared and delicious. Prices are moderate with large portions for your money. Some of the best fried perch and waffle fries I have had. I will be back any time I am in the area, a very high recommendation as long as you are looking for fish or seafood, go and enjoy.

As you enter, it seems like more of a farm. They have ample free parking and overflow parking so that's never going to be an issue. As you approach the main building, they have signs about the different outdoor areas and whether they're open or closed based on the weather or events. If you explore the grounds, you'll find concert areas, forested areas, fields, places to play games and be outside. The large patio area also has more bars and an event space. Plus the namesake twin oasts outside that serve as fire pit relaxation areas to drink as well. We went inside, which was also super busy for a weekday. There are lots of campgrounds and other lodgings nearby, so it seems like a regional hangout. We each got flights at the bar, all the bartenders were friendly and efficient, even with the constant flow of customers. The beer quality is solid and prices are reasonable. They have a merchandise area near the restrooms. Indoor has bar seating, tables, and cozier living room like areas with big open windows to enjoy the outside on cold or wet days. If you're a beer fan in the area, this is a must-visit. Even if you just like nice places to eat and enjoy nature, this is also for you.
