Torchy's Tacos

Torchy's Tacos

(106 reviews)

$$

I traveled to Austin earlier this year for work and every Austinite I asked for food…read morerecommendations suggested Torchy's Tacos as a city classic. Regretfully, I never made it to a Torchy's while in Texas--but luckily there's this one right in my backyard at home in Ohio. Torchy's is the Austin institution that went mainstream and is slowly spreading around the country. You'll order on a touchscreen kiosk and choose from tons of different taco and bowl combinations--including breakfast all day! Grab your cup and a buzzer and take a seat; servers will bring out your food as it's ready. I was pretty impressed with the selection overall. From beef to carnitas to chicken to eggs, you can get tons of different taco fillings. The drink station alone is impressive--the typical soda machine options plus iced tea, horchata and even cold brew coffee! There's also a bar if you're inclined to something alcoholic. All of the tacos and the hillbilly queso we ordered were delicious. I was actually impressed with the corn tortillas on my tacos--wasn't expecting them to taste so fresh. Tacos are a great size as well. Two is enough for a decent meal, but they don't pack the toppings on. Any taco you order (I would guess) can be picked up in its entirety. You won't be losing toppings at Torchy's! Service was a bit slow the day I came for lunch but nothing crazy (more like a sit down restaurant than the fast casual it's set up as) and the ambiance is nothing amazing. But the food is delicious, price is decent and I would definitely go back for a little taste of Austin.

Good location away from the mall parking. Friendly staff…read more Taco were good not knock your socks off but decent. Quick service. Good alcoholic drinks.

El Grillo - Enchilada platter with steak

El Grillo

This restaurant is definitely more authentic than most that I have been to. We ordered 4 steak…read moretacos, the chicken and cheese enchilada platter with steak and guacamole. The tacos were ok. The meat definitely needed more flavor. But they were filling. But the enchilada platter was amazing. The steak on the platter had fantastic flavor, the enchiladas were absolutely perfect and the flavor just melted in your mouth. The guacamole was very fresh and I haven't had some that tasty in a long time. The service was great. She made sure that we were doing good and would ask if anything was needed. My spouse is fluent in Spanish so that was a plus. The vibe was definitely more relaxing and welcoming because it wasn't a huge place. We will absolutely be returning to try other things on the menu.

I really like the lengua taco. I also got an Al pastor and a chorizo taco. I found the Al pastor…read moreand chorizo flavors to be a little dull. But the lengua taco was one of the best I've ever had. The salsas are good, hot enough for flavor without to much burn. I got an Al pastor torta, I was not impressed with the bread, it's not from a Mexican bakery, it from Walmart according to the person working there that day. I was told they use the buns from Walmart, because the patrons like it better than a traditional mexican bun because it doesn't fall apart. Overall, it was just ok. It's a nice, little place, a bit of a hole in the wall. I really liked the cooler of traditional Mexican drinks.
