The staff was super friendly, the restaurant was clean, and the food was presented really well. I'm from Southern California, I enjoy street tacos, and this is about as close as it gets to back home. The veggies were cooked well and not raw like I've had at other restaurants. The corn tortillas tasted like they might be house made and fresh. I also appreciated the salsa bar. The restaurant itself was clean and well decorated. However, the women's bathroom had a bottle of soap that was 95% water and didn't leave my hands feeling very clean. The hand dryer was also unplugged and there were no hand towels. What really brings my review down is the service. The service was definitely subpar. Our waitress was also the bartender and paid more attention to the people at the bar than our table. She didn't check on us throughout our meal, and only refilled my water once when she brought our food out. When we were done, we didn't know if they'd bring a bill to us or if we were suppose to go to the front desk, as she never said anything to us. Every single staff in the restaurant was on their personal phones, leaving the restaurant to take personal calls, and fraternizing more than working. We also witnessed several food safety violations including our waitress sticking her hands in her pants in the back to tuck her shirt, and another waitress playing with her hair excessively, all without washing their hands before interacting with customers again. While good food, I don't know that I'll go back given the experience we had with the staff. I really question cleanliness when behaviors like that are happening in front of customers.

I ordered the California super burrito with chicken and it was pretty tasty. The burrito was jam packed with flavor, I added a little bit of the chipotle salsa and it was delicious. I also ordered a couple Al pastor tacos and after adding a little onion, cilantro, salsa and lime... it was perfection. The corn tacos felt and tasted like they were home made which is another huge plus. The only negative about our experience was the service. Our waitress was totally absent and only came to check on us once during our meal. We both sat there with empty drinks and it was the only downside to an otherwise great experience. Another weird thing, the staff were trying to get a specific song to play and kept skipping songs for like 5 minutes straight. Every few skips, they'd run out of songs so we'd have to listen to ads which really threw the vibe off.

I say "experience" because this place is not just a place to get tacos. Half of the store is also a Mexican food market, which was such a fun surprise. You order up at the counter and simply find the seat that calls to you. Simply pay when you're headed on your way out. The birria pizza was so good. I will go here again just for that alone. So unique, but also delicious. The birria tacos fell a bit short of my expectations, but the burrito was fantastic. Will definitely come back because I can stress this enough, the experience alone was such a great pattern interrupt from how we typically anticipate Mexican restaurants to be. The staff was also very friendly.

Tried questioning the sales tax charged on our ticket which worked out to approx. 18.5% ($6.65 on a ticket total of $35.85) (Crump TN, where they are located, has a combined tax rate of 9.75%). Whoever checked me out was vague and very dismissive. Claimed he didn't know what other businesses charge, then blew me off completely to seat incoming customers. We have been going to Sombreros for several years, but as of today we will not be going back. I can (although I shouldn't) deal with being overcharged, but I'm Not going to put up with shabby, dismissive treatment. Anyone who goes there should check the tax charged on their ticket. It will probably be nearly double whatever it should be. Adios, Sombreros.
