This is one of the classic restaurants in Granada.
It was founded in the 1920's in an elegant neighborhood -
Near the Fountain of the Granadas on the broad boulevard of Carrera de la Virgine.
It is far from the tourist anthills of the Alhambra, Calle Molinos and Calle Reyes Catoloicos.
They make their own house vermouth.
However, they carry a much larger selection of vermouths than do most Spanish places - generally premium brands.
You can't go wrong drinking either homemade or premium.

Granada has a local tradition that if you order an alcoholic drink, you automatically get one tapa.
This is possibly a Granada anti-drunkenness measure to put something into your stomach to cut your drink.
You don't get a choice about what free tapa you get ... but we got good ones.
Over the course of the evening, spiced olives, a good salame, and a sensational tuna and pepper mix all appeared for nothing.

Most of the menu involves large dishes rather than tapas.
The plates are intended for sharing or for feeding a family.
At most other tables, this was just what was happening.
The most common configurations were Mommy, Daddy and child in a stroller sharing one plate.
The second most common configuration was a romantic couple just drinking.

I had the albondigas.
These albondigas are huge.
There were three meatballs in a serving and each one was bigger than a quarter-pounder.
They were served in a suave tomato sauce.
Italian meatballs can go take a walk.
My wife got "tuna with onions".
This was a fresh tuna steak, once again of enormous size, pan roasted with caramelized onions.
The tuna absolutely tasted of the sea.
I have never had tuna that fresh in my life -
and that includes eating sushi in Japan and eating at waterfront seafood places in the Greek islands.
Caramelized onions gives you a mellower more baritone dish than you normally think of with tuna.

There are no desserts here, but there is a perfectly functional ice cream place four doors down at the fountain itself.
There was some sweetness at the end of the meal anyway.
The price of the meal was much less than we would have expected to pay.

Generally, Taberna Granados is a classic upscale tapas bar
With a fine kitchen, a beautiful view, an excellent vermouth selection, very reasonable prices and not a tourist in sight.
