This place is probably a bit of a tourist trap, but we ended up here since they had seating and were serving food as early as 6:30pm, which is *extremely* early for Spanish dinner. To their credit, the service was the "best" (most attentive, by US standards) of almost anywhere we've been in Spain so far. That said, the food was average and at least partially frozen-reheated. The cod and oxtail were both cooked pretty well, but didn't come out entirely hot. I'm pretty sure the roast potatoes with most dishes were frozen/reheated since they were a bit sqiushy, and so were the green peas and such. Bread came automatically but was commercial and nothing special. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't especially great either. read more

I'm usually skeptical when a tour guide gives a restaurant recommendation but I'm really glad I accepted this one. A classic Spanish tapas bar, noisy and chaotic. The weight staff was impressive, recognizing new arrivals in the crowded quickly getting us drinks, taking care of everything after a couple of beers, we got a table. (Note that the restaurant is on both sides of the pedestrian street! ) Our waiter was cheerful and amusing. Although we mostly spoke Spanish, his English was quite good in the din of the small room. Let me make you aware that these bites were not small and I was sharing with two others but I really made a pig of myself because they were so good. Imbibed were many glasses of their delicious house vermouth and sangria. What can I say, I spent hours walking around the Alhambra and gardens so this was the perfect spot at the end of the night to refuel and unwind. We arrived around 10pm and this bar was crowded, busy, full of lively people and efficient bartenders. The style is very traditional and antique as the establishment is almost 100 years old! After a morning tour of the stunning La Alhambra, my family was hungry at around 11:30am, when most restaurants in Spain are still only open for breakfast. However, the ever-popular Bodegas Castaneda opens for lunch at just that time, so it was perfect for us! The restaurant lies on one of the side streets off a street that runs perpendicular to paths up the Albaicín. We enjoyed how it seemed tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the city! At 11:30am, there were already people waiting for a table, but we were immediately seated outside. One thing to note here is that the servers are neither friendly nor efficient, but many native Granadans have cited that this is normal for a real tapas bar. Our server got us a table, and then did not come to check on us for a good twenty minutes. A cool aspect about this place is that you get a free tapas dish for every drink that you order, so we each got a small plate of tuna, potatoes, and roasted vegetables on bread, as we ordered a sangria (average), a beer, a Coke, and water. The tuna was definitely canned, and the bread was stale, but it was a free tapas dish, so we really can't complain. We started off with a whole portion of the Ensalada de la Casa (House Salad, €8,60 for a whole portion). The salad itself tasted fresh, with a good variety of vegetables ranging from asparagus to beets, though we thought that it could have used a bit more flavor, and we weren't fans of the mayo-based dressing that it came with. We also ordered the Verbena de Canapés (€17,65 for Mediana Portion of 12 pieces), which came with a variety of toppings (Loin, Bacon, Green Peppers, Trevélez Ham, Salmon Paté, Dry-Cured Anchovies, and Frigate Tuna) on pieces of what seemed to be a baguette. Honestly, none of the canapés really stood out to us...the loin was fairly lean, but lacked flavor, the bacon was kind of standard, the ham tasted just like any other deli meat, and the salmon and tuna weren't the freshest. We enjoyed the green peppers, which were flavorful and nicely textured, and the anchovies, which were perfectly salted and not too oily. Again, the bread tasted on the stale side as well. Our final dish was the Tabla Castañeda Caliente (Warm Assortment, €18,80 for Mediana Portion). And wow, even the so-called "Medium" portion was huge! This is basically supposed to be all of their most popular warm tapas, and it comes with homemade croquettes, Spanish omelette, grilled pork loin, bacon, broad beans with ham, and fondue salmon with cheese. Overall, this platter seemed to be a mixed bag for us. The croquettes were some of the best we had in Spain - perfectly crispy and well-seasoned with a gooey interior with ham, cheese, and potatoes, and the Spanish omelette was delicious as well, with a rich, eggy, custard-like consistency and tender potatoes. But our favorite dish in here were surprisingly the broad beans - they had the perfect bite to them, and were paired with small pieces of ham/bacon...we couldn't stop eating them! Again, the pork loin and bacon were just okay, and the peppers were good - there were a lot of repeat dishes from what we'd already tried in the Verbena platter. However, we were not fans at all of the Fondue Salmon with Cheese - there was so little salmon in the dish that you could barely call it that, and the cheese was congealed and greasy by the time we were served. We had also ordered the Gazpacho (€3,80), but they had forgotten about it, and we were so full that we just told them to cancel the order. Overall, this seems to be a popular restaurant in Granada, but we didn't really understand the hype. There were a few standout dishes, and the portion sizes are fairly generous for the price, but everything else felt lackluster, and service was standoffish. In our opinion, there are much better places for Spanish food in Granada (which some say is the birthplace of tapas)! read more

The food tasted delicious and the waiters definitely tried his best to be as tentative as he can. This was our first stop after checking into our hotel in Granada. Saw that it had strong recommendations. This place was hopping on a nice Thursday evening. It was somewhat early for Spain dinner - only eight pm but this place was jammed. Of course being a tapas bar this place was busy and energetic every single time we walked by in our four days in Granada. We lucky got an outdoor table where we could watch the action. We ordered some wine (I still cannot believe how inexpensive decent wine is in Spain) and then one of their meat, cheese and pate boards. In this case the cold assortment. It was very, very good and a great introduction to the meats of Spain. And the price was not too bad. The waiter was brusk but it really did not matter in this situation. We stopped in during our vacation. We weren't ready to go home yet and so worth it. We were in Granada for only one night and stayed close enough to walk here, so here we are. The ambiance was great. It's a lovely place full of people having fun. When we entered about 11:30 pm there was a crowd of people having a great time. We were greeted by other patrons and quickly made our way to the counter for a Vermut on Tap. It's delicious. We were served some salty olives that paired so well. We were then convinced by a fellow patron to try the Calicasas, this is the only place you can get it, he stated so we each ordered one. It's a delicious combination of all of the vermut on tap and then some other ingredients sitting on the bar. It's a must to try. They served it with some anchovies on baguette's. Every time we walked past, this place was always PACKED no matter what time it was. It is a popular place among tourists and locals alike. Prepare to wait 20-30 minutes for a table! You can dine outside or inside. I highly recommend lingering over a glass of wine and trying the tabla caliente platter--the grande size is large enough to comfortably feed a family of four and features a number of classic Spanish tapas dishes/local delicacies. The oxtail dish came with plenty of tender, flavorful meat. Portion sizes for all the dishes are quite large and prices are good (a steal, if you go by NYC standards). Just came from a few days in Seville where the tapas were phenomenal and mind blowing. This is my first tapas bar since arriving in Granada and I'm highly disappointed. The tortilla española was mostly egg and had no oomph to it. Whereas all the many kinds of tortilla Españolas I had in Seville were hearty and full of potato. We also ordered the empanada Gallega and it was so salty and mushy. The eggs in the empanada were hard and over cooked or maybe just old. Bodegas Castaneda has 2 entrance sides = tapas and dine in. I decided to try their tapas. Vermut = The smoothest I've had in Spain, perfect blend. Sangria = Sweeter than usual. I didn't enjoy this as much. Mussels in Wine Sauce = Smooth, the sauce didn't overpower the mussels. The sweet peppers're the perfect compliment. Fried Chorizo Flambeed with Cider = The sausage's more on sweet side and just a tiny bit peppery. That along with the cider, yam, and sweet carrot make the sweet component. Whereas the saltiness of the sauce and chorizo balance the dish out. Jamon = Their jamon's pretty solid. You can see jamon just being displayed all over the restaurant here. The chef's nice enough to show and teach me around the different cuts and meat. He let me sample about 10 of them, which's a really nice experience. This place serves solid tapas. They always make their quality meat as the main star. None of the sauce & sides overpowered the meat, which's how it should be. read more

Lost in translation...between Yelp and Tripadvisor, this looked like a great place to eat. Unfortunately, I ordered poorly. I saw "mejillones" on the menu, which means "mussels". Yes! I love mussels! And it was only €7-8. I envisioned hot and steamy mussels in the shells, marinating in some sort of tasty Spanish broth. Instead, I got a plate of 8 cold mussels on top of some tomatoes and olive oil sauce. It was gross. Maybe this is an epic traditional Spanish dish, but it was not for me...oh well...my stomach felt a bit off for the rest of the night...ugh! The wife got some sort of tasty baked pastry filled with meat, eggs, and vegetables. That came with a small side salad, and was all definitely worth €6.50. The €3.50 mixed tapas of jamon and queso was good as anywhere else. €2-3 wine glasses. No free tapas if you sit down at a table... Its a fun, loud, and lively atmosphere with a traditional Spanish decor, but it looked like 80-90% of the clientele were all tourists. Service was alright. First tapas stop in Granada. Situated in a great location right in the center. As one of the oldest bars, it definitely has an authentic feel. Wasn't super crowded when I arrived around 730pm. The large bar is the centerpiece around which everyone stands. There are a few tables but few of them were occupied. The pace here is very fast when it comes to ordering. I started out with a red wine (really wanted a mixed wine, but the waiter misunderstood me). Didn't mind, took it anyways since it tasted good. First free tapas that accompanied my drink was composed of some bread, olives and some kind of frittata. It looked and tasted super basic. I ventured out and got one of their famous mixed drinks, the Calicasas, made with wine, vermouth and vodka. Not a huge fan of it. More for people who are into reds and it had an aftertaste I didn't appreciate. I was waiting for a 2nd free tapas with this drink. And guess what! It never happened. I waited a good 20mn, made sure I stayed front and center at the bar, made several eye contact with the waiter, nada! And people who came after me were getting thrown plates at them. Location: good Ambiance: sat outside squeezed very closely next to another table, as was the case for all the tables around us. There is indoor seating near the bar and in another smaller room. Service: unfriendly and slow but they're very busy so I'll give them that Food: gross. We got the sampler platter that everyone on Yelp was posting about and dare I say parts of it were inedible. The pork was so tough, the cheese + salmon dish was gross. Drink: strange. my sangria had that canned fruit cocktail in it. those were the fruits in my sangria. Wow what a night! We knew immediately upon spotting the place that it was going to be great. The outdoor seating area is super cozy and our waiter was incredibly entertaining. All of his recommendations were great: from the local wines, to the local cured meats, to the "liquid dessert" (sweet wine), all of it was amazing! We got the oxtail dish, which is super tasty and tender, and the cold platter, which came with meats, cheeses, and pate. Between two hungry people, this was more than enough! We had our first tapas outing at this restaurant. Come either really early or really late during their service hours or prepare yourself to wait for a space to either sit or stand. Once you order a drink you get a free tapa, house choice. They have two locations literally one next to the other but the ambiance in each is different. We visited both several times and ordered a few tapas each time including several Ibérico plates, rabo de toro, marinated anchovies, croquetas and torta española. The tapas were ok, some highlights were the Ibérico de bellota, rabo de toro and anchovies, the others were less memorable. So this place has two sides, a tapas side and a restaurant side. I mistakenly went in the restaurant side at first, so had to find my way over to the other side, which has the big bar, which is where the tapas are (duh!). I had the bread with salmon/caviar and the one with a piece of pork and ham and peppers (not spicy). I forgot both of their actual names, but if you show the server a photo I'm sure he could help you! Both were excellent, especially the pork one, it was juicy and tender, but also a little fatty and oil, just enough to hit the right amount without being overbearing. The salmon was good too, with a nice rich flavor that went well with the cheese and caviar. We were here in 2019 and had a great experience. Don't get intimidated by the crowd. It's packed and frantic, but fight your way to the bar and you'll be rewarded with some local libations and complimentary tapas. We tried numerous drinks from the barrels and enjoyed most. The free tapas weren't mind blowing but were generous in portion and accompanied the unique drinks. We also ordered tapas from their extensive menu and were not disappointed. It was PACKED and had three sections, a restaurant side, a bar, and a patio. We waited patiently for a table, and even when one opened in the restaurant, the server made us wait awhile to sit. It took awhile to order, and in Spain drinks must ordered first (culture). We finally ordered, but most of the menu was pork and I struggled to find anything of interest. We asked the server a lot of questions and he was very condescending about my restriction. He finally suggested the salmon pie so I ordered it and he would not let me get it! It was bizarre. Eric R. finally ordered a cheese platter for me instead. I noticed in the Spanish description that the cheese platter had jamon but Eric R. doesn't know Spanish and the guy ran off so it was too late. After he brought our drinks, he came back awhile later and said he forgot what we ordered! We had to repeat it for him. It was so late by now and and of course we had to wait for the food to be prepared in the full place. When it came, Eric R. got a Galician meat pie which was lots of pork and grease. I got the cheese plate, full of soft cheeses and cheese with ham in it. All of the cheeses without pork tasted quite awful to me and there was nothing good about this. The guy finally came by and seemed shocked that I hardly ate anything. It took him forever to bring the bill, and then when he rang it up, he would not let Eric R. pay in Euros first, then struggled with the credit card. They kept printing receipts that showed the last three tables' bills, like we paid $200 instead of our $25. He had to get the JEFE (boss) from the bar to come and try to figure it out. I asked in Spanish if we were the first people ever from the US to eat there and with a US credit card, and the boss said no, Americans come multiple times a day, ya-da-ya. After more than 30 minutes trying to figure out how to run the card, we got out of the there. I took tons of receipt pictures in case we had to dispute any charges. I had wanted to leave as soon as we got the food but this was like being held hostage. It sucked. By the time we left, most places in the area had closed so I could not get dinner that night. We visited this placed on a Saturday night. I wasn't sure what to expect as we approached but we were surprised by how jammed packed this place was. We weren't even sure we were going to make it through the door. There was standing room only. We made our way through to the corner of the bar area and was able to get two seats for 2 of our friends and my other friend and I stood at the bar when two other patrons left. People were still coming in and out (not discouraged by the crowd). That speaks volumes. This place is clearly popular for [free Taps with every drink you order]. We ordered two sangria each and was pleasantly surprised that the tapas were enjoyable delicious. The bar which was close to the open kitchen and as each platter or tapas went out I was salivating and wanted to order something but I didn't want to be greedy. I will definitely return to try more of there tapas. We watched the chef's skillfully make tapas after tapas and platters (We were so impressed, we took a few pictures and a few videos. The Chef's noticed and smiled with us. If we had more time in Granada, we would of definitely like to visit again, maybe during the day to avoid the massive crowd. read more

This tapas bar was always packed every time I would walk back to my hotel. It's close to Catedral/Capilla Real. Just like in most tapas bars in Granada, order a drink and you'll get free tapas. A glass of beer is less than 8oz so you can easily keep ordering beers and get free tapas with them. They also gave me a plate of green olives. I stood at the bar and I got 2 beers and ordered 2 more tapas so I can sample what they got. I got the croquetas, jamon, stuffed peppers and bacon (not the crispy version you're familiar with). Everything I got was excellent! Great flavors and textures. They have very limited tables and seats. In fact, they have about 2-3 big wine barrels as tables with some chairs, and a regular table on the right of the bar. Don't expect bar stools at the bar either. But the service is great. Come here around 6:30pm to avoid the chaos. read more

When we got to Bodegas, it was already 11:30 pm on a week day, so we were able to get a table right away. As the menu all in Spanish and the waiter didn't speak English, we struggled to order but the waiter was very patient and he understood what I wanted to order with my very limited Spanish. I told the waiter I wanted cheese, hams and stuff and he got us Tabla Castaneda Fria. Although it was a medium portion, it was a lot of food for two. But the cheese was so amazing I could not stopped eating. We pretty much finished everything except the pates, as I am not a fan of any pates. The only minus point would be the bathroom was so disgusting. But again, it is a bar so that's that. I would definitely come here again and next time I will be prepared what to order! read more

This place is always packed to the nine's and for good reason!! Serano ham. It's absolutely delicious. On a first visit we ordered a hot mix platter that including various items such as hams croquettes some cheese-on our second visit we ordered the cold plates which included the Serano ham different salamis reds and cheeses and some orange marmalade. The waitstaff is kind and helpful. I do think you can get similar food nearby for less of a cost but this is the place to be. read more

We had a quick lunch at this Spanish establishment during our stay in Granada. The restaurant offers two menus: one for a sit-down lunch and another for tapas at the bar. We opted for the traditional lunch menu, ordering three dishes: Paella - This dish must be ordered for a minimum of two people. It's filled with meat and seafood, and makes for quite a heavy entree. Although slightly blander than other paellas we have tried, it hit its marks. Spinach with garbanzo beans and sausage - Spinach and garbanzo beans seems to be a fairly standard tapas dish in Spain but the addition of the sausage elevated the flavor profile. Oxtail - The oxtail was tender and accompanied by a side of potatoes and shredded cabbage. We enjoyed this. Good meal overall at Bodegas Castaneda. read more
