We came across La Surena and thinking that I knew all the Spanish in the world after just taking Spanish100, I decided to attempt to translate the menu. I read chicken and fish and all, and naively thought that I would be having a fantastic meal for a ridiculous price. Yea right... So our meal came to $11 euros and that included 2 large pints of beer. And this is really what he had ordered... 7 mini sandwiches and a salad for S (which was also the most expensive item on our bill). So apparently on specific days, you can get mini sandwiches for just 1 euro! Yea, and they were filled with all the ingredients I had attempted to translate...So I hadn't exactly gotten the translations wrong, I just didn't know they would be coming inside a sandwich...a mini one to be exact. And although M hates sandwiches, he admitted that these were pretty good! The ingredients and sauce inside really made it delicious. I actually wouldn't mind having these agin to be honest. Just funny how I sort of tricked M into getting sandwiches when I really didn't know. The place was packed and their other popular items are nachos which are also dirt cheap. This would be the perfect place to grab a quick snack and a beer. On different days, they also have other deals such as a bucket of beer for a really cheap price.

We could only get two stools at the bar which might likely have suited a more romantic and younger couple. Despite this setback due to a previous day in-person last minute reservation the food and ambiance was excellent. Must say despite the frantic activity the staff were friendly, helpful and courteous. Our shared dishes were Grilled Sardines, Black Sausage (the best we've ever tasted), Cod Croquettes (nothing exceptional), Pimentos de Padron & Salad. The wine by the glass was good bit I'd skip the local region French style overly expensive Sauvignon Blanc and stick to Verdejo or other Spanish wines on offer. This is not a restaurant for a relaxing or a laid back evening. I don't think the servers feet ever touch the ground and the kitchen must be volcanic! Great value and well worth a one-off experience. Our meal €64.35 for 2 and like many tourists was rounded up to $65.00. We might be tempted to return but definitely only to sit at a table.

We're from New York City and finding a dimly lit "dive bar" in Spain was incredible. It has an edge to it, but the bartenders were amazing. Our Español was pretty terrible, and they helped us out. We ordered two large beers and were handed a plate of tapas all for 3 euro... which led to several more rounds... and then led to us returning the next night. I would've happily returned night after night if our itinerary did not put us on a train to Seville the next day. Hands down the best olives we had during the entire trip. I love the decor.
