We came here on a weekday night and got seated upstairs right away. It's a fairly cozy space and the service was great. For starters, we had the cheese board and went with the one that featured 5 different cheeses, along with pork pate, jam, honey, olives, and butter. Be warned, the serving size of the cheese board was much bigger than we expected. We had plenty for leftover afterwards. For the main dish, I tried their signature roasted octopus on a roof tile. I didn't enjoy my food. We ordered the famous octopus cooked on roof tile dish that won an award but I barely ate it. It smelled so bad and tasted very chewy. Super fishy and tough. The fisherman's soup was good but we asked for it in bread, the bread bowl option, and he brought out the regular bowl instead. Also the wrong bill was given to us at the end so we had to ask for the correct one. No wait at 19:00 on a week day but an hour later it was a one hour wait. Maybe we ordered the wrong dishes but I didn't really enjoy it. Also I emailed for a reservation initially and no one ever got back to me. Also the inside of the place is rustic and cute but not practical. The tables on the first floor are tight, so tight that the couple next to us tried to get up and knocked over their glasses of wine. My friend and I wandered here shortly past 10pm and sat us upstairs. We were really tired and overwhelmed by the menu so we asked our waiter to recommend 3 things from the tapas menu because weren't that hungry but could eat. It turned out to all be basically "bread and meat" dishes which was comical because I don't eat a lot of bread but my friend has a commitment relationship with bread so we had a good laugh about it. Each dish was great and having just one of them would have been fantastic with 2 varying sides but we did ask him for his favorites so I can't blame him for that. In spite of the unpleasant surprise if 12 pieces of bread (each dish had 4 slices), I'm still giving it 4 stars because they were delicious, the wait staff was great and the house red wine hit the spot! Taberna Açor is a must in Azores, whether you're a local or a traveler! It has a beautiful interior, a festive vibe, and quick and friendly customer service. It seems to have either a long wait of minimum an hour or to be booked all night. Outside seating is even harder to get, because there are only four tables. The Portugal gods were smiling at my friend and me, because we got a table instantly upstairs. We ordered: Tabua de Queijos dos Acores cheese plate, which comes with five local cheeses, a fig jam, honey, olives, butter, and paté. They have several types of cheese plates and I wish I wrote down which types we got (was too busy oohing and aahing over the cheese), but they were all pretty different from one another in taste, smell, and salt content, and very delicious. They bring a lot too, enough for 2-4 people. I recommend this one. And for so cheap, too! Tea - I got a pot of red fruit tea. Hot, refreshing, and flavorful. Melon - two slices of juicy lucy melon. Washed down the cheese well! Wine - friend got a glass of wine. She seemed to love it! Overall, an excellent place for a date, ladies' night out, or a relaxing night with the family. My family and I came into Taberna Acor around 6pm on a Thursday night. It was pretty full in the front, so they sat us in the back. We had no reservation, but they managed to find a table for us. I would highly recommend a reservation if you're looking to dine around 7 or 8. When we left around 8pm, there were several parties waiting outside for a table. Our waitress and waiter were both excellent and super nice. We ordered a pate + pineapple jam bruschetta, a grilled beef with peppers dish, and their cheese fondue in bread. The bruschetta was the highlight of the night. I would've gladly eaten 10 of those! We also had their hot stone steak combo, which was a fun experience. I've never cooked beef over a hot stone before, so it was fun. For dessert, we had their steamed egg custard and Azorean pineapples. Definitely eat the pineapples first - or else they'll be really tart from the other dessert. This was our last meal in Ponta Delgada and it was definitely one to remember. read more

Taberna Acor was our favorite restaurant in the entire Azores. It is true what people say about needing reservations as we showed up at opening time for dinner and were still turned away. Fortunately, I made a reservation for the next night and I'm glad I did. The highlight of the meal was their Azores spin on fondue. A delectable cheese made with oregano which can be found several places on Sao Miguel was spread across a bread basket served with crunchy toast. I used a sauce similar to au jus that was served with beef tips to make everything else even tastier! Make sure you ask for the cod fritters first, I apparently got the last two that the restaurant had and I am really glad I asked for them early, they were perfection! read more

We came here late on a Saturday. I had seen an advertisement for this place in one of the airline magazine so we figured why not try it. The outside looked as bit sketchy as some people were loitering (one man followed me and persistently asked for a cigarette). However, I was pleasantly surprised to see the inside was homey and lovely. We did not have a reservation which seemed to annoy the woman working there plus we were clearly tourists. Although they said they could accommodate us we felt ignored after a while and re-asked if we would be seated. The woman was even more annoyed, but eventually we got seated. We tried to order a few apps but it seemed whatever we wanted was not available, so we skipped right onto the main course. I got some grilled fish dish with onions. I wanted the fish cooked on the hot stone but the waiter said it would take too long and I didn't want that. It seemed liked it would be an inconvenience so I just got it grilled. This was my favorite restaurant on Sao Miguel island! The vibe is so cozy, waiters so friendly, and the food is humble, but out-of-this-world delicious. We actually stumbled in by accident, thinking it was a different restaurant, but we couldn't have had a better first dinner on the island. We actually came back on our last night because it was that good. Between two trips, we ordered: - Fisherman's stew in a bread bowl: Excellent rich flavor, and the bread bowl was so yummy after it had soaked up some of the stew - Octopus salad: Lots of tender octopus in a very traditional bell pepper sauce. The leftover sauce was great for bread dipping! - Bruschetta with crackling pate, local cheese, and pineapple jam: My favorite!! I thought I died and went to heaven this was so good. Salty, sweet, crunchy, this had everything. - Bruschetta with chorizo pate, local cheese, and honey: Also amazing. You can't go wrong with the bruschettas. This one was heartier and less sweet but my husband actually preferred it. - Skewer of 3 types of sausage and pineapple with melted cheese: This is insanely rich and decadent, and it's a huge skewer so plan to share it. Turns out we don't love blood sausage but this is a good place to start if you want to try it. - Fresh tuna salad: This was pan-seared tuna pieces over a green salad. Not a standout, but the fish was fresh, and this was a good healthier option. - Bacon wrapped dates: Well-executed. This is always good. - Spicy pork bites: Maybe the only disappointment. A little too cooked for us but good flavor. - Bruschetta with Flemish cheese, crackling pate, and blackberry jam: Oh yeah, this was delicious. - Bruschetta with Flemish cheese, chorizo pate, smoked ham, and honey: Order any of the bruschettas, and you're in for a treat. They are all winners. If that wasn't enough, the prices are unreal and the portion sizes plentiful. On both trips, we ordered way more food we needed to and ended up with a bill less than $40. This place is the best deal in Ponta Delgada. Also their house wine is a great deal. Get here early to get the best chance at a table or make a reservation like we did for our last night. read more

Solid for a casual dinner, and very affordable. We ordered grilled squid, steak grilled on the hot plate, and grilled chorico with a few glasses of wine for probably 30 USD. The squid, which we got with an herb preparation (you could also get butter), was very fresh tasting, and very good. The steak was no frills, but certainly the quality of beef was MUCH higher than you can expect in the US. You grill it yourself on a hot stone, and it came with some sweet potato chips and a salad. I did not care for the chorico - it was VERY salty and smoky and a little too much for me. My partner loved it though. I actually wanted to try a few more things but the server stopped us and said it would be too much food. Little does he know how much Americans eat, LOL. I wanted a cheese board, and he said that would be too much food, and truthfully, he was correct. The cheese board that came out for other diners was ENORMOUS. Personally, this was probably my favorite meal of the trip, though the fact that we were dining with two local friends probably helped as well, and overall made the experience that much better. When our friends picked us up they said they had dropped the ball a bit and waited too long to get a reservation anywhere for our large group. They suggested we come here anyways and put our name on the list while enjoying some drinks outside on the benches. I think we were promised a 20 minute wait and probably waited an hour, but we were having such a good time it didn't matter. When we were finally shown our table we took some time to look over the menu. I was about 1/2 of a bottle of wine deep and was immediately overwhelmed by all the options. This place is pretty much all tapas, so it's a huge menu with tons of options. We decided that it made sense to order 2 tapas per person and all share, and I left my friend Keith H. in charge of picking 2 for me lol. Our friends also ensured we ordered the "must have" items. Food started rolling out immediately and it became a bit of a race to eat things quickly enough to make room for more. I honestly can't remember half the things we got, but definitely get the flaming sausage, and definitely the tomatoes on bread, which are really simple, yet extraordinary. Taberna Açor was recommended to us from multiple sources on the island, but when it came to us trying to make a reservation, they were all booked. We were informed to come back a bit before they opened that evening and we would likely get one of the three first-come, first-serve outdoor tables. Lo and behold, two other parties had been given the same advice, and we all were seated promptly once dinner hours began. While we waited, the restaurant took drink orders so we could sit on benches across the street and enjoy what I found to be the best beer selection we encountered in Ponta Delgada, specializing in Portuguese craft brews. The standout here was an APA called Joe Da Silva, a surprisingly sweet-meets-malty pour in a place where my beer expectations were admittedly low. In terms of expectations for cuisine, those hovered around average and that's about where Taberna Açor landed. When a list of what the Azores are known for are rattled off - lake-filled calderas, whale watching, adventurous outdoor activities, thermal spas, hydrangeas, tea - the local food is often absent from said highlights. After sampling a number of traditional Azores dishes at Taberna Açor, I'm happy to have tried some signature fare, but I'm not all too shocked by their omission, with perhaps one (maybe one and a half) exceptions: - Limpets (or lapas in Portuguese) - In the wild, these look like barnacles, but are actually tiny snails. They are served grilled, like oysters or mussels might be prepared, but these just weren't my thing. They tasted overcooked (though by no means offensive or inedible), but I believe that's just the style. Try them if you feel compelled to check them off your list. - Blood Sausage and Pineapple - We couldn't stomach the sausage. I've had black pudding before, so I knew what I was in for (literally meat casings filled with pig's blood and then cooked and dried to solidify), and should've known better. The pineapple, on the other hand, an island specialty, was sweet and delicious and an appropriate counterpunch pairing to the aggressive blood-and-guts link. - Azorean Cheese Board - Easily the best thing we ordered, you're unlikely to leave the island without having some São Jorge cheese and perhaps some of its lesser-known, but just as impressive, counterparts. And unlike small slates with a pinch of this cheese or that you might find in other parts of the world, Taberna Açor's boards are monstrous enough to be the main course of a meal all their own. To say you got your money's worth on this plate o' dairy is an understatement. In summation, beer and cheese. Get there early if you don't have a reservation. Or just grab a drink, sit outside, and enjoy the geometric design of the Ponta Delgada streets. Taberna Açor remains on a short list for dining options in town to consider (partially given the limited competition), and for even an adventurous eater like myself, I'd sample a dish or two you've never tried, but otherwise, stick to the basics. read more

This was a wonderful memorable dinner on Sao Miguel! Went here following a recommendation from my AirBnb host and I'm so grateful! This had a refreshingly more modern take on cuisine compared to many of the more traditional/home-cooked style restaurants we ate at during our stay on the island. On a Saturday night in June around 8pm we were seated almost immediately (2 people) at an outdoor table, but after being seated I noticed more people arriving that had to wait to be seated. We had an awesome waiter (Henrique) who was very attentive and gave us lots of spot on recommendations regarding the wine, food, and other things to do on the island. Food highlights: a bottle of white wine from Pico recommended by our waiter, Tapa Corsica - amazing! - fried bread with soft cheese, honey and blackberry jam that was out of this world. Fried quail - loved!! Tuna steak - this is brought to the table raw and they give you a hot stone and oils/sauces to cook it in and you can cook it to your doneness preference. For dessert: we had the petit gateau, which was a mini chocolate soufflé - our waiter apologized for the wait and said that they cook the little soufflé like a real soufflé - did not mind waiting for that! It came with blackberry ice cream, yummm. For two people- 1 bottle of wine, 4 appetizers (tapas), 1 entree and 1 dessert we were pleasantly full and spent 50 euros. read more

Upon having a glass of wine while waiting, we got hungry and then looked through the menu. Whoa this place! Maybe not as well known as some other places on the island, but this was not only the best meal of our trip, it was one of the best meals I can remember having. Amazing place with great food and super friendly staff. We did have a small wait to get in, but ordered our first drinks outside while we waited, which they are totally cool with. Again, all the waitstaff, etc., speak amazing English, so you don't have to worry about relying on the shaky translation skills of you or your friends, which was good news in our case. The staff are also apparently very patient with tourists. The wine rack is well stocked here and the staff are prepared to make recommendations. As is typical per the Azores, the price of restaurant wine is quite modest compared to what you would see in the States. I don't remember what the price was, but I do know our meal ended up being like 20 euros per person, so it was extremely affordable (you'll see why below). Since this is a tapas restaurant, we ordered a bunch of small plates. I wish I could remember them all but I'll try to go over some highlights. Flaming sausage - definitely get this one, simply delicious! Cheese plate - a great variety of very sharp hard cheeses as well as some softer ones. I'm a big sharp cheese person, and these are much better than what you will typically encounter in most countries. Thinly sliced ham with cheese on bread - the taste of Azorean meat is different than mainland food, and I like the leanness of it. These were great bite sized snacks! All told, I think our group ordered 15-20 tapas and 3 bottles of wine (plus whatever we had outside), and our total bill came to ~120 Euros. Great value for us! Can't recommend this place enough. I would put it on par with the more well-known Tasca in terms of food quality, and I preferred the ambiance. Go here! read more

We were in Ponta Delgado for a layover and stopped here for dinner. It's very cheap, the prices are similar to what you would find in Lisbon at 2-3 euros a plate, with sausages and cheese board running 6 to 10 euros, respectively. Overall we loved the atmosphere, food, price and drink and highly recommend to all. Went to this restaurant after foolishly attempting to get a table without reservations at A Tasca. It was 10pm on a Tuesday so we thought it can't be that busy - well we were told a table would be free at 11:30. So we went walking and came upon Taberna. Aren't we glad we did! We were greeted with a friendly smile and seated right away. This bar is mostly tapas and we ordered a variety of items to sample. Cheese fondue, cod croquettes, flaming chorizo, octopus salad, crackling pork, bolo levodo with roast pork. Way too much for two people but we enjoyed all of it with the exception of the crackling pork. We were imagining a crispy pork belly but it was big pieces of roasted fatty pork, tasty but not what we expected. The Taberna is a series of three small rooms, we were in room #2 which was very dark and lit by the fridges for the cold drinks not very romantic. The third room offers diners a view of the loo, assuming the first room is best? We would go back for the service and food variety/quality. read more
