The Shabby Tabby: My Stay at The Tabard Inn While visiting Washington D.C., I stayed at the historic Tabard Inn. Before I arrived I called and asked about specific details; careful planning is important and necessary for me since I travel with some limitations. I spoke with a woman named "Emma" who sounded annoyed by my questions. She responded to my questions in a flat tone, pausing for a few seconds before answering. I didn't think much of it until I asked what toiletries were included in the bathroom. She repeated, "Toiletries?" in a questioning tone, which caught me off guard. I asked her if she knew what I meant, to which she responded "It has what all hotels have". I tried not to dwell on it. Maybe she was having a rough day; we're all human and we all deserve grace. As a fan of Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales, this stay was a must. The inn is named after the original Tabard Inn located in London, where Chaucer's pilgrims began their journey! The Tabard Inn is also Washington D.C.'s longest running inn, operating continuously since 1922. The lobby felt mysterious as it was dimly lit and filled with what seemed to be random knicknacks. In addition to the various photos, small statues, and other antique decor, the lobby smelled historic. There was a distinct stale stench, reminiscent of an old storage room. The area rug looked like it hadn't been cleaned since the inn opened over 100 years ago. I was immediately worried about how my room might be. While I didn't mind the old-fashioned manner of operation- Keys instead of key cards for room access, no elevators, and no television in the bedroom- I would have appreciated some modernization during my stay. My bedding was even stained upon check-in so I requested it be changed with clean linens. But to be fair, the price point very much reflects my experience. While there were quite a few mishaps, like my bedroom light turning on and off by itself, what stood out was the staff's accommodating nature. This accommodating nature was felt in their restaurant, too. I'll tell all about that later. The Tabard Inn feels like a glorified motel, struggling to balance historic charm with modern comfort. However, their responsiveness and willingness to address guest concerns remain their strongest asset.

The Tabard Inn website

Wonderful inn, unique rooms (stairs so perhaps challenging for some), lovely people in every position, great common space/bar to hang out in, and a restaurant locals come to. Warning: make SURE you book directly with them. Two different friends were tricked by google results: they thought they were booking directly with the inn but it turned out to be a third party (expedia) Expedia booked one of them into THREE nonrefundable reservations for the same time period. He made the reservation by calling a number that actually answered the phone "Tabard Inn" when it wasn't. The other booked online only to learn, when she checked in and said she was going to leave a day early, that the reservation was made through a third party...because the google search misled her. Luckily the front desk helped resolve both of these problems but who needs the stress! Just make sure you see this website before booking!

The rooms have a lovely ambiance.

My husband, adult son, his partner, and I needed to plan for a short stay in DC, more business than pleasure, but we thought a unique hotel would make it more fun. We chose the Tabard Inn for its history and overall aesthetics. We were not disappointed. The inn is colorful, unique, and provides all the ambiance anyone could ask for. The staff for both the hotel and for the restaurant were all friendly. Prior to the trip we suddenly had to extend our stay by a day. When l called to see if these arrangements could be made, I was helped immediately and was able to extend our stay without having to deal with a rate change that sometimes happens when a weekday stay becomes a weekend stay. They make it clear on their site that because of the nature of the inn, that there is no elevator. This is important to know when you have a room on the fourth floor. The stairs were daunting. Don't go into a stay there expecting to have the same experience you would in a more modern, typical hotel. It has quirks. But if you are looking for somewhere with atmosphere that is interesting and welcoming, give them a try. We took the chance and absolutely loved our visit.

Beautiful hotel!! I had no idea what to expect when I booked the room. It was on a whim and the price was right. The room was stunning. Private bathroom in the room. There is no tv or mini fridge but they have a restaurant and lounge downstairs and free WiFi. We also valeted our car next door for $49. Very nice guys!!

With Pooka at The Tabard Inn: Boogie Night The place is just packed this evening, and Pooka and I entered the dining room being led by the concierge. There was (literally) a collective gasp, and then exclamations of joy and approval from all the patrons having their Chrisnukah feast. Pooka was in top form, and grinned and wagged her entire butt as she dived into the fray. Much holiday love and adoration was had. I told all that asked that she is an Ayatollah Bordello Hound. We went up to our room to get settled in, and then went down to the bar where I sipped whiskey, and Pooka continued to hold court and get chummy with the staff. My first "real" job was at The Tabard Inn in 1977. My mom was besties with the head chef, an up and coming Austrian cook, Nora Poullion. Nora hired me as a dishwasher, and baby, I did a lot of dishes! That year in July - tropical DC summer - "Boogie Nights" by Heatwave dropped, and the pop radio stations went bananas. At one point it came on the kitchen radio, and EVERYONE in the kitchen started grooving. Then. When the song ended, the station DJ said, "People, that was too good; gotta turn that motha out again!" And the song started again, and everyone in the kitchen whooped, and everyone dropped what they were doing and started dancing, and I was over in the dishwashing station getting totally amped, and washing that pile of dishes like it was my funky mission. And THEN, the DJ played that song a third time, and the radio got turned up to 11, and the party spilled out into the bar, the Ethiopian waitress grabbed my hand and pulled me out of the dishes, and we all shared an absolute triple charged ecstasy. Radio still really mattered then. That's where you heard the new stuff. Subsequently, Nora's boyfriend, Steve told her that my mom was too old to be a friend, and that it wasn't a good look. Nora told my mom this, and utterly broke her heart. You see, mom had given Nora her first cooking lessons in Bangui (Central African Republic) when Nora was a clueless young newlywed with a French husband who had certain "expectations". In the following years Nora discovered her true calling, and became a culinary rock star. I kept the job for the rest of the summer. I highly recommend The Tabard Inn. It's employee owned, had a cool vibe, and not only is it a dog-friendly establishment, but is sincerely so. Also, as a hotel it is probably the best goddamn deal in downtown Washington, DC. I also found rock star parking out front.

What a charming place and very unassuming and actually a hidden gem in a rustic hotel situated on a NW street near DuPont Circle in Wash., DC! I met a very good friend and a visiting priest friend from the Netherlands for a beautiful breakfast. My friend had the Chicken & Churro waffles, Father had the classic Eggs Benedict and I enjoyed the famous Tabard Donuts (they give you two cinnamon sugar donuts) and vanilla whipped cream in a ramekin, Gouda Grits (in honor of Father who is from Holland, where that traditional Dutch cheese is from), and I had the Brussels Sprouts and bacon. Simple? I loved the donut, I only ate one & brought the other one back to my office to eat later; the Gouda Grits were good and a lot in the bowl. He tasted it too and approved, although he said it was also rich. The grits were topped off with decorative chopped scallion. I thoroughly enjoyed the Brussels Sprouts, in fact, I have never had them this good actually. They were excellent. My friend and I wanted to have Aperol Spritz but waiter said it was too early for the bar. So Father had an Earl Grey tea and I had a latte and my friend had a coke. It was an enjoyable breakfast and I would love to return again hopefully to enjoy the Aperol Spritz with breakfast and those excellent Brussels Sprouts and more on the menu to try. Had the waiter been service-oriented, personality wise, I would've given 5 stars!)

The staff and management did an outstanding job and left nothing to be desired. They went out of their way to ensure that our first anniversary celebratory dinner was an absolute success. We were greeted with a warm welcome and two cozy seating options (indoors or out). We chose indoor seating since the temps were running low that eve. Compliments of the chef we were offered a dry brut rose' along with a personalized anniversary card signed by the entire staff. Without further ado, the kale frisée' salad with feta and grapes was the perfect 'get your greens in before the main entree appetizer. We chose the veal porterhouse for our main course which was out of this world and paired with their Tempranillo by the glass. Although a bit cliche, it was honestly the best bone in veal we've ever had, so compliments to the chef. Also Tabard has wonderful tea and decaf coffee selections to pair with any of their deserts. I can honestly say that the food availability, portions, customer experience has improved significantly since our last visit. We look forward to returning for their, brunch, cocktails or lunch sometime soon. Kindest regards Cheers

What a beautiful gem. They make you feel like you're visiting family. Highly recommend this place. Prices are awesome. Love the beautiful decor and love the fact NO TV's. Close to some great eateries. People are super nice and friendly. No parking is a pain but there are meters right outside.

The staff is warm and gracious. One cannot beat the location for proximity to everything . Our room was spacious and decorated to match the hotel's rich history. The lounge was perfect for an evening conversation and a night cap. The breakfast was delicious and abundant. The three issues that hold me back from giving more stars is that the mattresses were almost unbearably hard, our room was bathed in light at night, and the noise of late night pedestrians, some super joyful and others very angry, invaded the room until 2:30 a.m. Recommendations for future guests - bring ear plugs, night/eye shades, and be prepared for a hard mattress. Perhaps the hotel could offer ear plugs and eye shades for sale or as a courtesy to light sleepers.

In our beautiful room!!

Stay at the tabard in to get transported to a different country and a different time period!!! So much unique art, culture, winding staircases and cozy fireplace nooks. It feels like being at home and in a fantasy world at the same time! I booked a room last min for my husbands birthday and they provided complimentary champagne!! They also let us check in 3 hours early because arrived early! We will 100% be staying here again!! They also give you a $10 voucher for the restaurant/bakery so we tried their cinnamon sugar donuts - they are AMAZING!!!

I went back and fourth on my review of the Tabard Inn. I loved staying there, and was so glad I chose it over the cookie-cutter "fancy hotels" that were part of my conference. The place is charming. The bed was very comfy, and possibly even had a new mattress. Super soft sheets and quilts adorned the bed. The space was large and comfortable with a walk-in closet nearly as big as the bathroom! I really enjoyed the cozy seating area and fireplace that were in the room. There is tons of space, and no tv included (just how I like it!) and the staff was friendly and attentive. An ironing board was included in the room and I was able to borrow a nice new iron (much better than the ones usually found in hotel rooms) from the front desk. The A/C worked very well and each room comes with a water container. The parts that left me torn were the label-maker labeled soap, shampoo and conditioner bottles. I had no idea what kind of soap was in them, likely cheap soap. Usually in these kinds of quirky places there is effort to make some sort of eco friendly, local or great smelling soap in the bathroom. Not the case here. The shower fluctuated from hot to cold regularly each day while I showered for no apparent reason. This particular room is also very dark. With no overhead lighting, and even with the wall length windows open fully, it does not receive much lighting. By turning on each lamp (and there are many) in the room, it reaches a semi functional brightness. And lastly, I was woken up at 7am each morning by stomping and banging on the wooden floors above me. It was quiet all the rest of the time, and I was generally up by seven each day anyway, but it seemed unnecessary and I assume for folks who would like to seep a little later it would be cause for annoyance. To echo some of the hotel reviews below, this hotel is a great find for a certain kind of traveler. I am that kind of traveler. I hate staying in normal hotels and don't expect it to be fancy, but choose culture and experience over most things. As a note of caution, the staircase is very narrow and steep! If you end up on the higher floors you will have a workout lugging your suitcase and bags up through the tight and twisty staircase. The hotel is happy to offer assistance, however. There is no elevator so you must be able to brave the stairs. I enjoyed my stay and would happily book again, aiming for a different room next time (each room is individually styled!) This review is likely specifically for Room #4, since I assume many do not suffer from the same darkness or noise concerns that mine did.

Room #5

Stayed last night in room #5 which is room category "private low end double" according to the lovely voucher I received at check-in. I will not be staying here ever again since I only got about 2 hours of sleep because the hotel is extremely noisy inside and out. Negatives: Very noisy hotel, you can hear everything. Squeaky floors and pipes. Bathroom could use an upgrade, bathtub looked a bit gross so I skipped the shower. Pillows are extremely flat. Really tiny room. The bed is a double and pretty uncomfortable. Light shines into room so impossible to sleep in. In the morning could hear dumpster trucks, glass rattling and trucks unloading in the street. Housekeeping kept knocking on the door at 8am and 9am. Why? They outsource valet parking which is $39 overnight and it took 30 min to get my car in the morning. Positives: Eclectic. Fluffy towels. High water pressure. Breakfast is amazing and service was equally as impeccable. Donuts. I had breakfast there and they asked me how my stay was and I told them it was really awful because housekeeping woke me up twice at 8 and 9am and they said they would let the hotel manager know but no one bothered to discuss my stay with me. I was better off sleeping in my car than sleeping in this hotel ever again.

The basement apartment is self sufficient, so we did not have the "bed and breakfast" experience of sharing, but that's OK for us.. The bed was amazingly comfortable -- one of those adjustable tempurpedic mattresses. I'm not sure if every room has one or if it was just our room, but it sure made it hard to want to get out of bed. There is free wi-fi and continental breakfast downstairs in the morning. This place is a great alternative to the pricey hotels around DC -- it has a private, relaxing feel and yet is close enough to the Metro that it is also pretty convenient. We would definitely stay here again.

Make sure you read all the info on the website, the only TV is in the common area (though there was good WiFi access in the rooms), the only parking is street parking which is free overnight until 9am but $15 for a permit during the day, but this is all made clear on the website, I had no surprises. In fact the owner was very helpful when we had our rental car a night longer than expected and he let us park in his personal driveway for a short time so we could have a leisurely breakfast and not rush to move it. Breakfast is simple but filling and well-cooked, when the pot of coffee is done after breakfast you can always make yourself a cup of keurig, there is always a bottle of wine and a plate of cookies to welcome guests when they return (my only complaint is the cookies are cooked crisp... We're spending a few days here for a cozy, romantic anniversary getaway. We had visited the inn several times, but our last visit, seven months ago, was different. I just had to write a review about an amazing young woman named Saxton, who made such an impression on us. It was her very first week working at the inn. I could tell she was going through some struggles in her personal life, but despite whatever challenges she was facing, she gave everything she had to making sure her guests had a wonderful experience. Her kindness, determination, and genuine desire to do her very best were impossible not to notice. I remember thinking there was something really special about her and that she needed to be recognized for being an extraordinary woman. I had no idea that taking a few minutes to recognize someone for the wonderful job they were doing could have such an impact on their life. When we returned this week, something happened that brought me to tears. During dinner, I saw Saxton again, and she was doing what she does best! There was a wobbly table, and she was determined to fix it. She literally had to get down on the floor and sit there to accomplish that goal, and she did just that! She wasn't going to walk away until the table was steady. That's the kind of person she is. You can tell she takes pride in what she does, even the smallest details. I saw her look up with a big smile, as if she recognized me. As we were leaving, Jessica, the lovely young woman who checked us into the inn, told me that Saxton had recognized me and wondered if I was the lady who had written the review. I said yes and asked if I could see her to say hello. When I saw Saxton, she gave me the biggest hug and told me that my review had literally changed her life! Apparently, it brought her hard work and dedication into the spotlight, and management took notice. She was finally being recognized for the effort and heart she had been putting into her work from the very beginning. But what makes me even prouder is that Saxton didn't stop there. She took that recognition and continued to build on it. Her determination, dedication, and ability to connect with people have only grown stronger. She kept showing up, giving her best, and proving herself through her actions. Now, just seven months later, she's being considered for restaurant manager! Yes, the same woman that sat on the floor to accomplish her goal of fixing that table. I may have helped bring attention to her hard work, but Saxton is the one who earned every bit of the recognition and opportunity that followed. What touched me just as much was seeing the light in her eyes that I hadn't seen seven months ago. I cannot begin to tell you how much that meant to me. It brought me to tears. I was so proud of her! She deserves every bit of that recognition. And now I also have to tell you about Jessica, another extraordinary woman in her own way. From the moment she checked us in, she was so warm and welcoming. She even went out of her way to personally escort us to our cottage, even though her shift was over and she was leaving. That was when we discovered that we share a love for birds. The next morning, when we returned to the restaurant, we saw that Jessica had left us her personal Birds of Virginia book to borrow, along with a map she had taken the time to mark with the places where she had seen some of her favorite birds. She was genuinely excited to share something she loves with us, and I thought that was just the sweetest thing. She didn't have to do any of that. She simply wanted to share her excitement and help us experience something special. I was so touched by her thoughtfulness. Lastly, let's talk about the food! Once again, it was absolutely extraordinary! Every meal has been wonderful, and the entire experience has made our anniversary getaway everything we could have hoped for and more. What makes this inn so special isn't just the beautiful surroundings, the cozy accommodations, or the incredible food. It's the people. Saxton and Jessica are two remarkable young women who genuinely care about what they do and the people they encounter. You simply cannot teach that kind of kindness and dedication. It comes from the heart. I sincerely hope management recognizes and appreciates what they have in these two women. And Saxton, I want you to know how incredibly proud I am of you. Seeing you again, seeing that light in your eyes, and hearing about everything you've accomplished was such a gift to me. I hope you get that management position because you have certainly earned the opportunity! And when you do, there should be a celebration. I hope we get invited to honor your spirit. Thank you for making our anniversary so memorable. We couldn't have chosen a more perfect place to celebrate!
