Parking is Free and Plentiful -- In early August 2025 we showed up at 6:30pm on a Monday (to hike the preserve). There was tons of parking in the lots that abut The Boathouse, and the lots are always free for the public. There is also free street parking on the street just past the traffic circle. The hike/trail (The Douglas Family Preserve): A nice easy trail, and really fun for the doggos as it is an off-leash area. I'd say that half the people we saw on the trail had a pup, while the other half had no pets. The loop from the ground to the top and back is 1.5miles. There is 150 feet of elevation gain over a distance of about 1/3 of a mile; the rest of the hike is flat (w/ a large mesa at the top with lots of interconnected trails if you want to make the hike more extensive than a 1.5mile loop). Our dog not only enjoyed the walk, but had lots of fun trying to start some small play sessions with other dogs that she saw on the trail. Bonus: this trail uses the same parking lot as Hendry's Beach (Arroyo Burro Beach), which is leash free along the coastline east of the lifeguard tower (to the left of the lifeguard tower if you are facing the ocean).

No. But it was pleasant and super easy, with free parking and zero crowd. We'd be lucky to have a beach like it in L.A. The sand wasn't especially nice, I guess, coarse and rocky and full of ocean debris. There was also a water quality advisory out for the day we went, which we only discovered once we had all our stuff set up. Otherwise, though, I have no complaints. The view was beautiful, and we were able to claim a prime spot to put down our friends' massive cabana. We brought chairs and beach toys and spent the afternoon relaxing, as all five kids in our crew were thoroughly entertained. My older boy even enjoyed the rockiness of the beach, collecting several interesting rocks that he requested to take home (we let him pick two). If you're looking for a quiet beach to lay out and entertain children, Goleta Beach is a great option. We had a lot of fun here and would be happy to go back for more rocks and sun.

It was a cold afternoon in the last days of 2022, and the park was pleasant despite the chill, a great place to hang out with a gaggle of littles. The park was clean and attractive with an ample parking lot and sizable playground. Our toddler loved the swings and the jungle gym, and the older kids liked going up the climbing tower and looking down at the rest of us from on high. It was reasonably busy on a Wednesday afternoon, though not at all crowded. I did have to intervene on behalf of another set of parents when their toddler ran right into the path of my son's swing. They did not seem to notice. We spent a good hour here and other than that moment of child endangerment, it was a lovely time. I'd recommend MacKenzie Park if you need a place to play or entertain kids in the neighborhood.

Value - 5 The value here is incredible. We reserved Area A for just $65 for the whole day for our family reunion! It came with a large, double-width bbq, two picnic tables and a long, high-top serving table. That's a steal, especially considering places in Oxnard (which aren't nearly as bougie or clean) were charging well over $200. Quality / Cleanliness - 5 This park is impeccably maintained. There are two large picnic areas (require reservation) and several smaller picnic areas with bbq (first come, first served), and the large, well-maintained play area for kids is fantastic, including a jungle gym and even musical instruments. The path down to the beach is somewhat steep but totally worth it. The beach itself is super clean, with sand at low tide and lots of cute nooks and crannies to explore. At high tide, it becomes a rocky beach as the water comes right up to the path landing. Plus, it's pet-friendly! Service - N/A As a public park, there isn't a traditional "service" component to review, but the booking process for the picnic area was smooth. Physical Location - 5 The location is simply stunning. Being on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean is breathtaking. The park is clean, the amenities are well-kept, and there's a cute little town/shopping area just past the Amtrak overpass that's easily walkable from the park. I really had a blast checking out all the decor and elements at this park! It fits right into Solvang's Danish theme! By the way, Solvang translates to "Sunny Field(s)". If you are in downtown, it would be better to drive to this park. It's not in the main touristy area of Solvang. We drove out to the park since it's about 3 miles away. There is free parking, playground, picnic areas, sports fields, walking path, & restrooms. This park is unique! I planned to come see it for myself when I came to Solvang on Jan. 17, 2026. Every aspect from the entrance sign to the playground is filled with Danish decor! I was intrigued with the mosaic clock tower out front and the embedded elements in the walkway. The playground is awesome! You walk through the windmill to the slightly raised decking. I checked out the neat painted wood panels, each with cutouts for your face or body. Photo Op time! There's a castle with towers, slides, tire swings and regular swings, rubber rope to walk across, rock climbing wall, monkey bars, rings, and more! More specific Danish themed items at this park are a Gingerbread House, Puppet Theater and Viking Ship. They're so cool! There's also a Tot Lot for 2-5 year olds and adult supervision is required. The play houses and a wagon for climbing are in this area. It also has spring ride-on animals and 3 baby swings. There's a picnic shelter with a Santa Maria style grill. It's perfect for grilling lots of food for a large group! The restrooms are just beyond this picnic shelter. They are each accessed by their own door. I prefer this style rather than the multi-stall restroom. Whether or not you are a kid, kid at heart, have kids, or have kids with kids... come check it out! I think you'll be happy you did!
