We only went for drinks so unfortunately I can't speak to the food, but we had a great time. Fair warning, it gets packed to the gills but everyone is having a great time and happy, what more could you ask for? The bartenders are working hard so wait time for drinks was minimal. Despite how wild the crowd gets, the staff is working hard to keep it clean. Bartenders and security were very friendly throughout the night. We went on a Friday night and they had a great band playing from 10- close. Will absolutely visit again next time we're in town. read more

We did come back later and did enjoy the other band, though they played a mix of traditional and American music. Came here on recommendation of a friend. Wasn't left satisfied, but had a decent time. The food was alright. For €7 I got the student toastie and soup of the day. The toastie tasted good but was overall very small and very cheaply made; barely had enough room for the ingredients and was eaten without much effort. The soup was a nice addition, though it was a bit lukewarm when arrived. In addition, the food took a while to arrive, which was surprising considering the quality and quantity of the food my party ordered. Had I known these ahead of time, I would've invested in a more hearty meal. The service was alright, though a bit out of it. All the crews were rushing around and was hard to find a table for us. They all seemed confused and was hard to get a hold of them. The ambiance held up for the most part, with the inside looking like an ideal cozy pub with low lighting and stone walls. The bathroom, however, was horrendous. The floor and toilet seat were soaking wet, with the stall door barely able to close and the flush button completely destroyed; not to mention the smell of the stall. It was apparent it wasn't taken care of. Though I may come back for a quick bite to eat when I'm back in Galway, I wouldn't claim to have enjoyed my experience. read more

Authentic Irish pub. Stopped in Galway on our way to the Cliffs of Moher. Entire city was full of tourists on buses. Last week of October most tours end soon. Walked down into the Latin Quarter and toward the end of the street decided to stop in for a lite lunch. Would have chosen the outside tables but was a bit chilly and rainy. Took a minute tho the pub was packed with regulars. Was warmly welcomed. Order a couple of sandwiches and a pint. Food was a little slow coming out but figured due to it being packed. Food was very tasty. Would definitely recommend for lunch, but beware during the summer season probably couldn't get in during regular lunch hour. read more

Cool place to hang out while the rain decided to bless us with her presence! The Bar was a little too crowded with no room and hard to get service. Once we did order I chose the potato and leek soup as well as a tomato and cheese sandwich. The sandwich featured a soggy tomato and I could not find a potato anywhere in my bowl. I agree with a review, the pub is a 'victim of YELP success'. They promote Live Music Everyday however, when arrived at 6pm for the 6:30pm music, figuring we'd grab a good spot, grab a pint, and be ready to go, it turns out they don't really use the stage. The musicians sit at booths of their choosing, and unless you are the booth right next to them you can't hear across the bar. The pints were warm-even from the tap. In addition, we learned about how the Irish poor 'quality Guinness' and this was not a place that pours 'quality Guinness'. It would be better to skip the 'live music' promise and grab a nicer, friendlier bar with just music on the loud speakers-it'd be a better experience. read more

Great wee pub in Galway. Traveled half a day across the country to visit my wee cousin in Galway; we popped in here for lunch and of course an Irish coffee. I loved the vibe of this quaint wee pub that's serving up some fantastic sandwiches. The sandwiches and soup both really hit that sweet spot in your tummy. It's best washed down with an Irish coffee; don't worry it's always 5 o'clock somewhere, plus no one will judge you in Ireland no matter what time it is. So if you're in Galway, just stroll down Shop Street and enjoy a really good sandwich and a pint or two. They also have live music, and just a head's up the kitchen does close early. read more

We stopped by this pub after a long day of site seeing. It was a gloomy, chilly evening and I just wanted to get warm. The fireplaces were roaring when we entered and the place was packed. This must have been another locals favorite, because we definitely "stood out." We grabbed our Bulmers, Guinness, and two wooden stools and listened to the music being played. We stayed for a few rounds and then left, but I really enjoyed our time there. I would definitely vist this pub again! read more

Great place! Live music twice a day which is grand and a great place to tuck in when it's raining and cold. Was wondering by when I heard the music and decided to pop in for a look. Found a spot at the bar got a Guinness and just relaxed! It's a very warm and friendly atmosphere there's no pretension or pressure you can literally just sit and relax and enjoy! Being by myself I ended up meeting random local people who shared stories and such, nothing creepy just the kind people of Ireland for ya! Service was great all very quick and helpful and kept an eye on things in a way I haven't really seen in the states. Saw them refuse a guy because he was already pretty wasted and they were clear and firm simply telling him to come back tomorrow. I do t really ever see that and I respected them for keeping a sharp eye and maintaining the good happy safe atmosphere! I would definitely recommend if you're in Galway looking for a pint and some good music just pop by there! Taffes Bar actually spelled Taaffes Me and the Gal spent a week traveling around Ireland seeing the Sights and have a few Pints. Okay, We had more than a few pints. We wanted to spend some time in Irish Pubs. Out of all the Pubs we love Taffes the most. Good Irish music, friendly staff, a good mix of mostly Locals and a few Tourist. We spent the evening talking to a couple of local Guys. Well before we knew it we had been locked in the Pub. Apparently at closing time they lock the doors so no one else can get in and but we can continue knocking down Pints. We needed a Regular to show us how to unlock the door. Interesting enough we got lock in the Pub but got lock out of your hotel and needed to buzz to get in. It was great to listen to the locals speaking Gaelic with a more than occasional English swear word thrown in. Our new mates were trying to give us directions for a restaurant they thought we should visit and asked how we liked their winding twisting streets. I said "Hey I'm from Minneapolis/St. Paul we had drunken Irishmen build our streets in St. Paul!" That got the Locals and the bartender rolling on the ground laughing and it got me and the Gal a free pint of Guinness from the bartender. The bartender kicked out a group 4 or 5 girls that looked like they were 15 years old. He said some like, "Oh no, you know better, get out!" I wasn't sure if any minim drinking age was enforced because I never saw ID's check at any of the Pubs. So it was nice to see. 5 stars. read more

The bartenders made our experience incredible!! We came in here and we're instantly greeted by Nick, who has been there awhile and was super friendly and beer knowledgable. We had a really nice, chill lunch at Taaffes. My wife ordered the vegetable soup and bread; it was a delicious blended soup, with flavors of carrot and perhaps mushroom. The bread of course was the delicious brown/soda bread that we miss now, being back in the US! I ordered an open-faced tuna salad sandwich, which was good because the tuna and bread were good quality; if I ordered it again, I'd ask for half (or less) the mayonnaise. Took my friend to his first Irish pub here! It had also been years since I had been in a pub - my heart swelled as soon as I heard the rendition of "that Pogues Christmas song" from the live band. The place was hopping with people of all ages dancing and singing along. I always appreciate the great mix of people you see at pubs. We were here one evening for the live music. The music, drinks, and atmosphere were great, but it was much too crowded. I know pubs get crowded and I don't expect to have much personal space when I'm out at night, but it was uncomfortably crowded. This pub should be on your list if you like a good pint, a relaxed atmosphere and some decent traditional music. The pub is usually buzzing on the main strip in city centre, but there's still a conversational, convivial atmosphere - both ingredients of good craic. I enjoyed the Guinness here and even more enjoyed the FC Chelsea television that someone had put on the television in the front room! A banjo and guitar cut above healthy chatter in the main bar, and both musicians were very good. Overall, Taffes is a place well worth a visit in Galway. read more
