Kettle Restaurant - Toasted/hard as a rock hash browns and EXPIRED bacon.

Kettle Restaurant

While down in Laredo, I was taken aback! I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me when I saw the…read moresign. I have not seen a Kettle in decades. While growing up in Conroe as a young lad, a Kettle was located in town near the interstate. It was never really a culinary delight, but it was 24 hours, and catered to the drunken crowd at 2 A.M. After many years, it closed, and I've never seen one since. Curious to see if the Kettle was still the same, my friend and I decided to give this one a whirl. To be fair, my expectations were low, and the bar was set very low upon walking in. I have always thought of Kettle to be a red headed step child to Shoney's. Upon pulling in the parking lot, it was not very busy. The exterior was pretty run down, and the building looks like it could use a facelift and a new coat of paint. Upon walking in we were greeted and sat down in good time. The inside looked like an old antiquated diner, as expected, but was surprisingly clean. Upon walking to our table, we passed by a dog approximately the size of a Labrador, sitting by a table. No biggie, maybe it is a service dog. Upon closer look, the dog was not a service dog, and was a pet of a homely looking fella in a booth. Before all of the dog lovers get on my case about being mean to dogs, I am a dog lover myself, and have two dogs of my own. Also, my comment regarding the homely fella is not meant to be offensive, as I am not better than anyone. That being said, the dog was not a service dog, and was very attentively waiting to be fed by its owner. The dog also had no vest, or items that usually mark a service dog. It was at this point I was tempted to leave, as this is disgusting, and highly unsanitary. While the establishment should have a no dog policy (service dogs excluded), I decided to give this place a chance. The waitress took our drink orders, brought our drinks, and took our order. The menus look old, and the food in the pictures do not look very appealing. My friend ordered the #41 and I ordered a three egg omelet. We waited for our food, and our drink glasses stayed at acceptable levels. So far, so good. Food came out in average time. My omelet was very good. The hash browns left a little to be desired, but still not bad. My friend ate his food and did not have any complaints. The service sort of trailed off after we got our food. We asked for our check, but the waitress never came back. After we waited long enough, we just decided to go up to the front and wait for our check. When we did that, our waitress reappeared quickly, and cashed us out. Overall, I would say the experience was just meh. My low expectations did not disappoint me at all. The food was surprisingly good, and better than the one in Conroe I was accustomed to. The experience with the dog just ruined it for me. This could have easily been a three or four star visit, Fido ruined that. Do I recommend this place? I would say maybe. Depending on what you are looking for, and if you have an open mind, I would say sure, why not. If you are looking for a more modern and upscale place, pass on by. I would have to say this is probably my first review where I have been so indecisive on recommending a place to eat or not. Enjoy.

I stopped by for the first time in years. The atmosphere is that of a run down dinner. The service…read moreis awful, with a sense of entitlement that says "don't ask me, don't bother me". The food is unsatisfactory. I ordered the eggtravaganza which consist of 4 eggs, hash browns and bacon with a side order of two pancakes. After about 30 minutes of waiting, I finally got my meal. The eggs were "MEH", the hash browns were extremely toasted and hard as a rock. When I tasted them, I taught I had gotten a small rock on my teeth. The bacon, appeared undercooked and had a distinct taste and smell to it. I spit it out as , as It was EXPIRED. I put the plate aside and tried the pancakes. They were "grainy and blend", I ate a few bites and abandoned the plate. I told the waitress of the EXPIRED bacon and for her to tell the cook. She just said OK, and if I wanted something different. I said "no" the bacon had ruined my appetite. I asked for the bill, she went to get it. Upon paying I noticed she removed the plate and left the pancakes. Nonetheless, I ended up paying about 15 bucks for two pancakes and a cup of coffee. Service and food are horrible at such place.

The prices here are reasonable compared to Houston or Dallas, for example, but most everything is a la carte, so you can spend a lot quickly if not careful. My eyes were set on the seabass ceviche, so I know I had to have that. I also wanted a cocktail, but I remembered I had a long drive ahead of me, so I just opted for more food instead. I ordered the corn flake fried chicken sandwich. Ceviche - a nicely sized portion that comes with 2 crispy tortillas. Inside the ceviche are finely diced carrots, red onions and cucumbers, cilantro, sliced avocado, and numerous pieces of diced fish and lime juice at the bottom. 5/5 Chicken sandwich - served on a plate with 2 sliced yellow cherry tomatoes sitting face down. This has a large breast, with pickles and cole slaw. 3/5 This is my kinda place, and it seems fairly unusual to find a restaurant like this in Laredo of all places. I would definitely come back on my next visit to Laredo.

So very disappointed with service, marketing, and meal. I came from California and wanted to have…read moresomething nice and unique. The menu online looks spectacular and had a lot of interesting dishes. I was super excited. I saw that they were open late and I was also very happy about this because my meal was after work. I arrived at 9:30 walked in the side entrance and saw a post hunched over and squatted down, looking at her iPhone. I also saw another employee leaning on the host stand talking to her. He didn't greet me neither did she until I walked to the front of the house stand. She got up from her crouch position and said can I help you? I was surprised to see what she was wearing, an oversized hoodie with some type of logo on it, which was not an appropriate thing to wear, and it did not match the other employee that were more crisp. I said dining for one and grabbed a menu and slid it across the host stand out of pure laziness. She slumped her way over with the menu hanging on her left side and sat me at a table. Wow what a lousy first impression for a restaurant that I was so excited to visit. A server came over gave me a menu and brought me water. Disappointed to see that the menu was completely different from the menu that I saw online. No unique dishes and the variety was not great. However, I was there and felt I'd give it a chance. A server that was at the bar entering tickets or something, kept looking over at my table, but no one ever acknowledged me after I was seated. I waited for about 10 minutes until someone realized I need assistance. The server finally came over. He was polite to check my order served my meal left me to be on my own to check on me one time, but it certainly wasn't a two minute check when he should to see if my meal was to my satisfaction. My plates were not cleared and I had to ask for the check.. the food was OK. I had the salmon. Nothing spectacular. risotto was uneventful. Got my check and left. No goodbye, no thank you for coming in no stand out service. As a restaurant professional in California, I can't figure out if it's just a Texas thing or they rate everything high or this restaurant truly is deserving of its accolades..

We had drinks at the bar to begin with and even ordered a few appetizers that were fantastic!! The frog legs and the charbroiled oysters! Servers are friendly and well dressed, this is a high end spot. Table bread was good, came with chimmichurri and butter, it was good. So good in fact that they asked me if I wanted another bread, and I said of course. What they failed to mention is that they charged $5 for the bread, wasn't expecting that at all. No one advised me of that but alright. We ordered a shrimp with oil dish, cooked in a cast iron, this was outstanding! Great flavor, came with 6 pieces of shrimp and came out on a hot cast iron pan. Highly recommend. I ordered a 15 oz picahna and my wife ordered 12 oz American ribeye. The ribeye was thin, but cooked well. However they failed to season the steak. The picahna was cooked okay, also poorly seasoned. When you think of picahna , you think of the fat cap, tell me why my picahna did not have any fat cap on it? They carved out the fat! I mean cmon man, you're an Argentinian steakhouse and you do that, that is blasphemy. Then they cut my steak, let it bleed out on the plate. Is this their first time or what? Leave the steak whole, like my wife's ribeye. The second saddest steak I've eaten. The worst one was a ribeye I had at Otillias. Steak came with steak fries and they were okay. My wife's baked potato wasn't fully cooked either Overall this place missed the mark and for paying $115 for two people before tip, you're better off grilling your own steaks for a lot less. I paid $40 for the picahna and $39 for my wife's steak. I wanted to give this place 3 stars but that bs bread move left me upset. I honestly think if you're looking for a decent steak, save yourself some money and go to Texas or Longhorns steakhouse.
