Oh my. This station is stuff of legends. Being a major transfer point for buses, there are always…read moresome award winning, sketchy people around this station. No matter the time of day. I can remember this place always having people around it and the number of stories about this station on the news. Such a breeding ground for weird ish in the city. Wasn't any different when I came through here. I intentionally got off at this station to venture out to grab a bite to eat. However, I should have stayed on a ways to find that bite. Exiting here you go down a what feels like a dreadful long hallway. That is after getting off in probably one of the darkest stations I have ever been to. You get closer and closer to the exit and noise, accompanied by a weird smell hits you. You then realize that that smell is not a smell you want to be smelling. That smell is the smell of unwashed, of public restrooms wherever you want, of too little cleaning. I will echo a few things here. Be aware of your surroundings. There is a lot going on here. Yes, there is a police presence here, but most times it feels like they are just passing through or don't care. Right inside the entrance, it is pretty, but don't let that false sense or welcoming blur your senses.

Potential to be a great amenity for the city…read more But instead the elevators (and I'm sure other areas) are filled with urine. What a pleasant experience... Hire some security / patrol, and a basic cleaning schedule, and this station would be just fine.

When I lived in Pittsburgh I avoided public transit like the plague. For two reasons, it wasn't…read morereliable and, especially when talking about the T, didn't go near anywhere I needed to go. That still holds true, but I used the T to my advantage on my recent visit. I started here and decided to use the Free Fare Zone to get me to where I needed to go for the short time I was going to be in the city. It worked, but not as efficiently as I wanted it to. Little backstory, instead of the city looking at where a majority of people were living, working, and going in the city, they decided to expand the T to the North Shore. Instead of sending it up into Oakland towards Squirrel Hill to benefit neighborhoods and students at the many universities, they decided to benefit those that were coming to see the football and baseball teams. The city was told that it would eventually connect all the way out to the airport and benefit everyone. That was nearly a decade ago and nothing else has come from this other than an inflated final bill for boring a tunnel under the Alleghany River. Now that I am off my soapbox, back to the review. For all intents and purposes, this serves its purpose. The northernmost terminus (at this time) of all three lines, Red, Blue, and Silver. To gain access to the platform, as this is an above grade platform, you will need to either use the stairs or elevators. This station sits caddy corner from Heinz Field (it will always be Heinz Field) and the same side of the street as the Carnegie Science Center. The other side of the platform is the Parkway North and beyond that the North Side. All you have to do is wait here for anyone of the trains to arrive and you will be on your way south. Honestly, if you are riding within the Free Fare Zone it does not matter which line you get on. Just know that when the train does arrive at the station you will have to wait for the driver to switch ends of the car to get it going back towards Downtown. Once you are on you way, you start to descend below grade and towards the next station.

Allegheny is (for now) the northern terminus of the Pittsburgh Regional Transit light rail system…read moreand it is served by all three lines - Blue, Red and Silver. It is on the north shore. The station is above ground and exposed to the elements so if it's windy, the platform will be cold and if it's rainy, the platform will be wet and slippery. Use caution. Escalators, elevators and stairs, the station has two tracks with an island platform. There is decent signage for those who are unfamiliar with the station which is likely as other than commuters, you're in walking distance to the Steelers stadium and the Carnegie Science Center. The station is in the "free fare" zone so you do not need a ticket to board or exit here, but if you're headed beyond the city center, you will need a ticket when you depart.
