I have been a "member" for a couple of years now. While my husband and I did enjoy our first year…read moreas tenters, it was the fellow campers that made our trips enjoyable and worth the 2 hour drive up. The owners, Rich and Joe were welcoming and nice. In our first year, we rented the same sight each weekend and we were sometimes charged a holiday rate (as it was a holiday weekend), primitive sight cost (water/electric) or the basic rate (non-primitive). This site was not a primitive site but our rate fluctuated based on who checked us in. We always packed up our site before 11am and was verbally told that we could enjoy the pool/deck until we felt like leaving so we did. A few times during potluck, we have seen men scratch/grope themselves (groin and crack) and then instantly dig their hands in a bag of chips or grab a spoon to scoop some food onto their plates. (Skipped over whatever they had touched and ended up grilling our own food). We noticed that Joe would often get irate about different things that happened at the camp or something done in a way that wasn't done on his manner. This was confusing as one min he was smiles and happy and the next, angry with the world and completely silent and rude to his camping guests. As we began making more friends, we also saw the cliques within the campground. As Joe mentioned, he hated cliques. However, I have seen him promote his own. If you were in Joe's clique, you were able to do as you saw fit. If you weren't within his clique, you were an easy target for doing anything that he didn't agree with. I have been awakened several times to his dog, Cobalt, slipping under our tent screen and sniffing through our coolers and food bags. I have also had dog waste in our site and even saw him (Cobalt) in the act of relieving himself. As a dog lover, I know that this is what dogs do. As a camper, I know the owners' dog had free range of the entire campground (as all dogs did). Last month, Joe had made a post on the Facebook group page about owners cleaning up after their dogs. In agreement, I commented that people did need to pick up after them but as dogs walk around, they sometimes go places that the owners don't see. I used his dog (Colbalt - who is now deceased) as an example of wandering and going where he saw fit. Since Joe did not like my feedback, my comment was removed, my access to the campground group page was also removed and he unfriended me (which I'm not losing any sleep over lol). As a CUSTOMER, I think that this is completely unacceptable since this business welcomes their members "home" but then is disrespected for promoted healthy discussion with its members. It sure doesn't feel like any home that I want to be a part of anymore. While I love(d) the majority of the people there, I feel that I will take my money and put it toward a more deserving and friendly establishment versus here. I see this place shutting down in the next 5 years if it can make it that long.

We called Swanzey Lake Campground and asked about length-of-stay rules. Jill assured us there were none and even let us choose a site in person. The lake and new bathrooms made the higher price feel worth it. Everything started fine until a couple weeks in. My wife and I had a heated--but non-violent and quiet--argument and we foolishly called the police. They came, found no issue, and left. Jill and Bill were understandably upset, but after a sincere apology, Jill gave us another chance, saying if it happened again, we'd have to leave. Fair enough. Then out of nowhere, a welfare check was called on us by another camper claiming I wasn't letting my kids out of the tent. Absurd. In reality, it was a quiet Saturday--we had fans running, windows open, and WiFi going. My kids were happy and safe. It felt like someone was watching us simply for not being social. My kids were upset, my oldest was confused and scared, and I let the office know how angry I was. We had done nothing wrong. Even the officer said she didn't know why she was called and gave me her number in case I had any new concerns myself. A few days later, someone I had worked with months ago at a nonprofit (not law enforcement or anything official) called the campground asking for me because I hadn't responded to her calls. That same day, we were told to move again--and that we had one week left. Baffling. I went to the office and tried to explain, but Jill refused to hear anything. She referenced the call and said now she was on "a state agency contact list" - whatever that means - and said that was enough to end our stay. That was the moment I realized logic was no longer part of the equation. Later I spoke with Bill, who was respectful but said he had to support Jill's decision. It became clear--if you're not part of the seasonal RV crowd, you're not really welcome here. We were in a tent, not an RV, and that seemed to make all the difference. Even after we left, I was told there was yet another complaint--this time about our dog being left in the car. The car had been remote-started with AC blasting. It was still cold when we returned. But again, everything we did seemed to be reported and twisted. We were moved to a spot with zero privacy, surrounded by campers who all seemed to know each other, hung out together, dined together. Jill had told us we could stay through mid-August. Then suddenly we were told the site was "seasonal only." The inconsistency was exhausting. If you're doing actual extended camping--not just a weekend RV hangout--this is not the place. There's clear favoritism, it's very clique-like, and we were constantly scrutinized for things others were doing openly without consequence. We didn't accept the additional week and left the next day. We were treated unfairly and judged, and despite our best efforts to respect the rules and communicate, it wasn't enough. I wouldn't recommend this campground to anyone looking for more than a brief stay. We were not the problem. Your clique was, your judgment was, and Jill, you owe us an apology. But we already know we'll never get one. Do not stay here. Period.

I explained to the person working that this happened, he assured me that it happens sometimes and it would be taken care of. The owner told me that Booking didn't give her them money. So she wasn't going to refund me. Booking said she should refund me because I prepaid through the booking site. The owner told me it was my problem to figure out with booking. It never got handled after months of going back and forth with them both. Wouldn't it be her problem to figure out with booking since she uses their service to fill up rooms? I think this is such a bad business approach. And I wonder if she was even honest with me about not receiving the prepaid payment I did thru booking. Either way, I wont use booking.com or every recommend or go to Kampfires Inn again.

I have almost forgotten how wonderful it can be to stay in a great B&B, and this one certainly…read morerestored my passion for it -- and then some. From the street it looked like a charming New England B&B and there are plenty of those in the area. What sets this particular one apart, in my opinion, are the following: * At the back of this charming home is a beautifully crafted, lush garden with a hammock and benches placed in strategic nooks designed for optimal book-reading or daydreaming. At the top of the small hill is a pergola -- for more daydreaming, or if you are a bride-to-be looking for a romantic venue, this tops the cake. * The added bonus: you get your own entrance to a walking trail (please see picture below) that connects to a network of trails. It's beautiful now in the the summer time. I imagined how much more beautiful it will be in autumn. I must come back. * The breakfasts are to die for!! Imaginative and definitely gourmet. BTW, I had stayed in some expensive hotels before (the Four Seasons, etc.) -- in my opinion, this B&B's breakfast is better. Way, way better. On my first day, the second course was freshly-baked frittata with a side of steamed kale and zucchini -- picked from their garden. The cheese had just the right gooey to it, and the eggs were fluffy. Day 2: French-toasted croissant filled with creamy custard and drizzled with maple-orange syrup. Yum! * The Owner, Lynn is a wonderful person who had lived in Brattleboro for a very long time and knows its ins and outs -- from where to get great cheese to Brattleboro's unique home architectures. Engaging when a guest needed help and wonderfully welcoming. Yet, I always felt I had my privacy. She has mastered how to be a great host. BTW, the rooms are clean and well kept with a touch of history and modern amenities -- for example: I had a double shower head (a rain shower and a handheld). One last thing: In a hotel or an Airbnb, I always felt unsafe -- locked and double locked. In contrast, in the three days that I stayed here, I left my windows open at night to feel the cool evening breezes from the garden, and during the day, I left my door unlocked while I ate breakfast at the dining room. Priceless. I would come back for the breakfast, or the garden and walking trails, or the wonderfully warm, welcoming atmosphere -- better still, get all three. This one is definitely worth going back to again and again whenever I find myself looking for a great place to stay in Vermont. Highly recommended!

The suite was extremely clean and stocked with lovely linens, fresh fruit, coffee, and even fresh autumn leaves for a beautiful decorative flair. They were kind enough to pick us up from the Amtrak station and really attended to our every need. I figured we wouldn't get a refund. I understand with such short notice. I still decided to provide the courtesy of informing them we wouldn't be there. I did ask however, if someone picked up our spot would we get a refund? The answer was no. I asked, "so you'll make double?" This was confirmed. That is disappointing to me and a poor example of customer service. Like I said I understand not being refunded for the late cancellation, but it doesn't feel right that they would profit off of an unforeseen hardship by not offering anything in case the spot got picked up. Not sure I'll want to give them my business in the future. Beware- might be best to book this one very close to the dates you'd like to use it.

Our young grandson got hurt near the pool area & Scott was a tremendous help in calming him (& me) down and applying First Aide to him! He was so reassuring and had such a calming presence!
