One observation as we have been traveling across Norway and visiting many museums is it is hard to read many of the plaques, not due to language barrier - because most have English translations - but the lack of light. Part of this is due to my aging eyes but truly there just isn't enough attention given to illuminating signage. You can make it work with your phone light or just looking harder but it's hard to focus. Minor pet peeve for an otherwise great experience. The tower in particular has seven levels starting with a dungeon which you really get a feel for what it would have been like as a prisoner - just from standing in near darkness beneath the tower for a few minutes. Some prisoners were kept there for over a year. Amazing. Great experience and wonderful history. Worth it!

Ignore the touristy shops and restaurants if you're not into that kind of stuff. I'm not really into that sort of thing, so while I did walk along the front, for me, the best part of this area was walking down the alleyways and seeing the unique architecture up close and personal. There are so many fun little woodworking details if you really take the time to look. We were here in the middle of summer, so a very busy time, with a lot of people around, and it wasn't too overbearing people wise. Especially in the alleyways and around back. There is also some green space and ways to get to other tourist sites in the back, so heading that way through the alleyways is a great adventure to be had.

There are plenty of stands selling goods and food to eat. - The vendors and people working the tents were mostly very nice and most of them let you sample certain items. - The reindeer hot dog we ate was fan-flipping-tastic and I'd eat one once a week if I could. The bad: - The seafood was less local and more what's popular. I didn't come to Norway to have Norman (French) oysters or branzino from the Mediterranean. - The pricing was all over the place, but mostly extremely expensive. We were wanting to try a reindeer hotdog and we saw one at three different stands. Each stand had a different price for the same item. We went to the cheapest stand, it's a hot dog, but didn't get the items advertised. It was just strange and off putting. - Not enough seating. I purchased my tickets through the online portal about a month before our trip to Norway. I don't…read morebelieve you really have to do this because the line for ticket buying is pretty short and there are kiosks along the way inside to buy tickets. Also, if you happened to be in the line to buy tickets, you just enter afterwards, instead of waiting in the prepaid ticket line, it's kind of a cheat. At least that's what we observed. The line for the prepaid tickets was extremely long, going down the block for a bit but it did move fast. We got into line around 235 pm and we ready for the funicular around 3pm. For the length of the line, I thought this moved very fast. When you enter the gates to the funicular, be aware of the people counter. It counts down the amount of people that can enter. So if you're a party of 5 people and it says only 3 more can enter, you will be split up if you enter. There are like 5 gates so you have to pay attention if you want to stay with your party. There were MANY people who did not seem to understand this and started yelling at or crying to the kids working the line. There is nothing they can do, it's a safety issue and you will have to meet your party at the top of the mountain. Also, the last lane (most left handed) is for disabled people or people with strollers. It's kind of a d*ck move to go to that shorter line if you aren't one of these people or in a party with one. But karma hits hard and if you do try this little sneak, you'll probably end up waiting even longer because the special car it leads to has a small capacity and that line moves slow. Other than that, this funicular is a nice ride up and down the mountain, with plenty of spectacular views and cute moments to see.

We didn't have much planned for the beginning of our day so we decided to start here and work our way back into the city to do the things we had timed reservations for. The surrounding grounds were quite lovely and free to the public. The weather was amazing when we went and there were people sunbathing in the grass and picnicking. There is a lot of greenery and the beauty of the area is spectacular. The walls around the fortress were interesting. We did an entire lap around the walls first, then wandered up to where the manicured grass and building were. Many of the buildings, like the royal residence/castle are no longer standing but there are two main structures of historical significance, Haakon's Hall and Rosenkrantz Tower. The exhibits inside were worth the entrance fee to the museums, in my opinion.

The original church was located elsewhere and built about 1200, it was moved in 1883 and suffered a fire in 1992, thus what you see in newly reconstructed in the same form as the original. Check out the small door to the left of the alter where persons with leprosy could receive blessings. Also the dragon carvings are meant to ward off evil spirits.

It is a little bit of a hassle to get to if you don't have a car and are staying in Bergen, but there is an express bus or you can take the light rail closeby and walk to the entrance. We took the light rail there and express bus back (bus was definitely more efficient and door to door from central Bergen). There is some food at the top, but not a big restaurant. All and all if you like mountain views and/or hiking, this is worth a trip. We saw many take the gondola up one-way and then hike down.

I'm a church addict and love the architecture and historical significance of them. I can't resist visiting them, especially if they are old and ornate. It didn't hurt that this church also has a very interesting cemetery on it's grounds. To be quite honest, the cemetery is what drew me in first. There is a small fee you have to pay to be able to see inside of the church. To be perfectly honest, this put me off a little bit at first, but it was less than $10 and I told myself that it's to keep this beautiful place alive and well. If you don't want to go inside to see the lovely stained glass or the ornate altarpiece in the chancel or some of the interesting icons, that's ok. The beautiful outside, with the ornate iron work on the wooden doors and the super shiny blue, almost black, shingles will quench your church thirst. Or at least it did mine.
