Good food, pushy waiter, great atmosphere We were looking for something local to eat for our last night in NZ and we came across this place. We walked in and a rugby match was on, so there was lots of cheering going on. The waiter came and took our drinks. After that he was kind of pushy, almost telling us what to get to eat. We wanted to eat light as we had an early flight the next day. We just wanted a couple of appetizers and a couple of drinks. We finally ordered what we wanted (not what he wanted). Szimpia advertises itself as being a casual, comfortable, and affordable spot for good ole' fashioned comfort foods with a contemporary twist, and they do that exceptionally well. Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere? Conveniently located within striking distance of the airport, Szimpia has abundant seating for one and all, and they were easily able to accommodate our party of 20 following a business function. Fast and friendly, the service was well up to snuff and the drinks kept flowing in abundance. Star Granted. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? $23.00 for mac and cheese eh? That portion had better be... oh my... The photo below might not do it justice, but this was a truly unbelievable portion of mac and cheese topped with abundant greens, mushrooms, bread crumbs. To answer your question yes, I ate the entire portion, and yes, I hated myself for a full 24 hours afterwards. Prices and portions of other dishes were well in line with my mac and cheese, and all in all there's some exceptional value here at Szimpia. Star Granted. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? Was this the best mac and cheese I've ever had? It wasn't, but it was close to being the best I've had outside of the United States. The pasta and cheese were both well portioned and with good consistency, but the flavor was just a tad bit lacking. The 'truffle' flavor advertised wasn't quite there despite the abundant mushrooms in the dish, but even so the flavor was good, and I really liked the greens for an addition. Single Star Granted. Stand back coffee club cause you just got owned, we all know and love food from cafe/pubs but this one takes the crown ! I went to here with my boyfriend and GURRLLLLL was it amazing or "amaze balls" For starter we had the salt and pepper calamari and a mini meat lovers pizza and man did we finish that fast !! The calamari was beautifully seasoned and damn that salad on the side tasted fine !! It complimented well to the aoli that was on the side. I give it a 9/10 (because there's always room for improvement like more sauce lol) that meat lovers pizza was lovely the base wasn't too hard and you could taste the tomatoes and all of the herbs that was on top it was simple but satisfying ! On to the mains !! We both had the burger, boyfriend has beef and I had the chicken and man I think the burger was the size of my face !! we both decide it have to cut it in half cause you know... Why not be fancy ? The fries on the side were really nice, i prefer crispy shoe string fries and I wish you could choose between the options but then again I wish all restaurants gave me that option But overall the atmosphere and food was amazing and we both had an amazing time. The damage however (the bill) was very hefty but it was a once a while kinda meal and the hosts were amazing Good job guys !! A hipster little gastropub tucked under the ibis budget hotel at the Auckland airport. Food was pretty good. Calamari: 5 stars. Delightful and crunchy with good flavor. Beef burger: 3.5 stars. The beef patty was a little bit overcooked, but the overall flavor were pretty good. Fries: 3.5 stars. Average. There is indoor and outdoor seating. Indoors, there are 3 large TVs, which were showing a rugby game at the time we visited. Service was great. read more

Very good food in a relaxed atmosphere, at least in the afternoon, although I could see it being more hectic in the evening. It's attached to the hotel. It's a few minutes from the airport, and a great, quick stop before a flight, or perhaps between flights. There's plenty of parking in their lot, or in the hour spots in the street. Good drink selections, varied food, gluten-free options on the menu, and a bottle of water on the table. For a Saturday night they had a bunch of reservations already set up in the afternoon. The Thai beef salad was quite good, a bit heavy on the sauce, and I wish I'd known it came with sprouts. It's greens, onions, chili pepper, a piece of fried wonton chip, and a decent amount of beef slathered with a brown gravy. The ginger fusion is very good, it's in the need section of the menu but it's a mixed drink, maybe it's common in New Zealand. It comes with a mint sprig and lemon slice, and tastes like real ginger, over ice. Both came out very quickly. read more

Boyfriend got the lamb shanks over chickpeas which were meh and for the price, this dish was a bit disappointing, but that wouldn't deter us from coming back. Stop here for lunch based on yelp reviews. It's more a bar than a restaurant. It was 2 pm on a Monday, and the place was pretty empty. Wait staff was preparing the place for the evening, but were nice, friendly and attentive. This is a large restaurant with outside seating. It was a cold, cloudy day so i sat inside next to a large window. I ordered the beef cheek stew for $25 (one of the more expensive items on the menu) and it came fairly quick. The dish came with mash potatoes and broccoli. Tasty and well done. A bit too much salt but still good. Nice place. Only complaint is the loud background music, but that's part of the atmosphere. read more

This is a nice, relaxing place to come for a quiet beer or two, and maybe a bite to eat for lunch. They serve some good food and very nice tap beers, which are not unreasonably priced. There is a little corner part of the pub which is some crazy retro theme, with old fixtures, decorations and couches. It's quite cool to chill out in here. Also the outdoor area is very nice with plenty of tables and plenty of plants. I can't help but get the feeling that I've stumbled into a rainforest. Some of the larger tables inside the pub are made from old doors. They have a thick coat of lacquer on them to make them smooth. I thought that this was an ingenious idea, very functional, and they really do look cool. Good on you Szimpla for coming up with unique new ways for re-using old stuff. I approve. read more

We popped in here on Sunday for lunch. The interior is pretty cool, lots of seating both indoor and outdoor. The waitress came over immediately and seated us. We ordered the seafood chowder and the steak sandwich special with a bucket of fries. A few minutes later we were advised that the steak sambo was unavailable so we ordered the pork belly sliders with hoisin sauce. The wine and cider arrived which was great but unfortunately the food brought the whole experience down. The chowder was not terrible but a bit fishy, like the ingredients were not especially fresh. The bread that came with it was not good, very greasy. I prefer to butter my own bread The sliders were terrible. The pork belly was incredibly fatty. The bit I tasted was like jelly, really horrible. We left the last slider (we got 3). Chips were only ok, pretty tasteless, we didn't finish those either. Had meal 5 November. My salmon croquettes had smooth interiors as they should be but with limited salmon evident. The accompanying kimchi was not what I would have thought as a good match,certainly not what was experienced during two months in Barcelona where croquettes are common. My wife had the traditional fish and chips - the fish was bland and chips soggy.
