At Tai Kai you leave with so much more. Not only do you get top level training from the original BJJ school in CNY who has the most black belts around, but you also gain a new family, community, a home away from home where everybody knows your name (like Cheers, but without the alcohol). I couldn't be more sincere when I say you earn a new family. And this was evident when my 5 year old son (who also trained at Tai Kai) was diagnosed with brain cancer. Ken, the owner and my friend the past 10 years, put together a fund raiser at the gym to help raise money for my son and the upcoming medical costs. The turnout was huge and was more than I would've ever expected. Ken and everyone else at the gym checks on My son all the time, asking how he's doing and I wish I can bring him into the gym so he could get to see everyone who cares about him. Others had dropped of food for us, donated toys, clothes...etc to help relieve our burden. The 10 years I've spent training Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, boxing, and mma at Tai Kai; the blood and sweat, the physical rigors and soreness from a great workout....it's all been worth it to be able to be part of a family and community that had my back in the most difficult time of me and my family's life. Don't be lured into Miori under the guise of "six weeks free classes!" You'll regret it. Not only…read morewas I completely hustled into signing a six month contract for my 3.5 year old, but there was also no way to get out of said contract unless we moved, died, or were able to get a doctor's note stating my child was unable to participate in class. Admittedly, I should have been more diligent about what was required contractually, but the staff at Miori in Cicero weren't amenable to refunding us at all. They simply stated that our contract was for six months and that's what we needed to pay for. My child started school and we quickly realized classes twice a week were too much! I had to call their third party billing company, which charges a 10 dollar service fee every month so you're paying more than the agreed upon amount regardless, and pay out my contract. To advance also requires additional payment for each belt which is hardly even earned...avoid this place.

He is the only teacher that I have found anywhere (including in NYC) who is both a purist committed to correct form and a thinker who explains Taiji rationally, even for newbies. Other places pass off bullshit choreography as some mystical "Taiji", students learn to execute a series of moves. But the key to Taiji is not moves-- Taiji without proper body awareness and form has zero value. I learned so much from just a few classes with David. I no longer live in Syracuse, so I keep looking for a teacher like him.
