A rite of passage for new homeowners is to deal with a major repair. Less than a year after moving in, heavy rains led to water from outside making its way inside without invitation. Noticing some damaged wood that was likely to blame, we called on Nelson to help. Of the various contractors we solicited for quotes, Nelson was the most through and punctual. And throughout, Nelson and team were reliable, communicative and provided expert work for a job which started as a "minor" siding repair but expanded (to our dismay) in scope as increasing amounts of rotting, structural wood from the previous owner was uncovered. Although it was disconcerting to see how much damage we would need to address, Nelson was sympathetic and assured us that it would be straightforward to fix and advised on a couple of different approaches, which we agreed to. His team arrived on time every day and worked around weather conditions to perform carpentry, waterproofing, and offered continuous updates. We also hired Nelson's team to paint afterwards, and are very happy with the results. By the end we started dreaming about other projects or repairs we could accomplish and started getting his feedback on those as well! One thing we learned is that it's necessary to make sure the discussions are thoroughly documented-we had a couple of misunderstandings about what was included or not after verbal discussions, which we either resolved through the contract, or realized after the fact that it was something discussed but never written down so we let it go. BACKGROUND: We wanted bookshelves installed above a built-in cabinet unit in our living room. I sent Jitendra a sketch and described what we wanted. From my chicken-scratch sketch, he created a design and mock-up, then measured our space. While measuring, he flagged all existing flaws in the space (uneven/slanted walls) so that we were aware of all inconsistencies upfront. He has amazing attention to detail! RESULTS: We were simply blown away by how well he was able to match the custom shelves to our existing unit; all of the wood looks like it was manufactured at the same time! It truly looks like it was all constructed as one piece from the very beginning, which is exactly what we wanted. In addition, we really appreciate that he took initiative to incorporate crown molding/extra detail on the top of the shelving unit. This is something that I would never have thought to do. The quality and care of the work was totally shoddy, careless, non-functional and non- durable. The price was completely disproportionate. My friend who looked at the work described it as having been "phoned in" on a toy plastic Mickey Mouse phone with a fake rotary dial. One example- the installation of a washing machine drain connected only with duct tape and without a standpipe, so water leaked all over the floor the very 1st time the washer was used. Another example: Repair of a redwood gate using a piece of interior trim (not redwood and not waterproof). I wasn't sure how/if it was attached to the rest of the gate so I pulled on it gently and it started to come of in my hand. It was only attached with a few staples (not strong or waterproof). My mistakes: 1. I did not read other reviews, especially the one where Kelly responds to an unhappy client with "I know who you are and I know where you live". 2. That I let him do these super simple projects without me supervising and telling him not to use the wrong materials, not to attach moving parts in a wet environment with tape and staples and not to make the work disfunctional, weak and ugly. I hired Brian to help prepare my home for sale based on a list of repairs and improvements provided…read moreby my real estate agents. Brian presented himself, when asked by my Agent, as someone experienced in plumbing work. He replaced the plumbing connections on top of the water heater; however, the unit continued to leak afterward. He was on-site for over eight hours that day. More than four of those hours were spent at Home Depot, and the remaining time was used working on the water heater plumbing. I later hired a licensed plumber from a professional plumbing company, who advised that the job should have taken approximately two hours, that incorrect parts had been used, and that the work had been performed improperly and unprofessionally. During one of his Home Depot trips, he was sent to purchase gutters for the house but instead returned with a large box of miscellaneous items (at least 20 insignificant items) that had not been approved or discussed. These items totaled over $400!!! There is no justification for treating someone else's money that way, with no regard for their approval or expectations. To make it better, he stated that he had used a friend's military discount card as if that was a good thing. The gutters were never purchased and when I returned the items to Home Depot, I only received a reduced refund, resulting in an additional financial loss. I asked him if the discount was charged back to his card and he said "no"??? I also observed him spend approximately four hours making a minor repair and painting the front door, which further raised concerns about the efficiency and quality of the work being performed. Overall, a significant amount of time was wasted, the quality of work was below standard, and I incurred unnecessary big expense as a result. The experience was extremely disappointing and resulted in both financial loss and delays in preparing the home for sale. He also left several tools at my home and said he would return after Memorial Day to collect them? Seriously? As a single woman in my 60s, I found this situation inappropriate and unsettling for numerous reasons.
