When a few of my outlets here at home stopped working I contacted several places I searched for from all the normal outlets one searches for this kind of work. I must have sent out this request to 20 different places. Less then half got back to me an Sylvester Electric was actually one of the first. Every single company that got back to me had an hourly rate for the job I needed which was considered a service call, but Sylvester Electric, had what they call a service fee to come out and check the problem and give you a quote of what it will cost. Now on the one hand I understand an hourly rate makes sense as a lot of these problems may take several hours to fix and often you wont know the exact time it will take. But on the other hand, as a home owner, it worries me to hire someone who charges by the hour and may take several hour to fix the problem and I don't even know if they are good at their job until after I might have spent several hundred dollars on a job with them. So I chose what I felt to be the less risky option of having them come out for the check and spending a service fee to see the electricians and here there quote/estimate and if after meeting them I felt they weren't good for the job and I didn't like their quote, I just pay the service fee and then have to just risk it with someone that does the job with an hourly rate. So a low cost risk option. Well after talking with them they arranged for someone to come out after the weekend and right away they set me up with text alerts and an email alert to verify the appointment and a few hours later I also got a call from the electrician to verify. I immediately loved that kind of service. The day of the appointment I received a call that an electrician was on their way and would be there in 30-40 minutes which would have them arriving here 1025 for a window they had given from 10 to 1pm. Juan 1 and Juan 2 as I referred to them later (as both were named Juan so I told them that is how I would distinguish them) There quote/estimate was less then what it would cost me for having one of the other companies for 2 hours. They did have the caveat that if it needed new wiring or a breaker the cost could go up significantly, but they showed me what the estimated increase would be if that were the case. Before they started I also mentioned about an outlet nearby that also had issues where it seemed the wiring wasn't tight and they said they would see if that could also contribute to the issue I had. They started their work, checking all 3 non working outlets, the panel in the basement and the problem outlet that may be associated with the issue, but they didn't find the problem there, but they quickly thought that the problem might be in the wiring in the attic. The problem was indeed there and so when they found the wiring issue there, fixed all the outlets while also replacing 2 of them and then fixed the attic wiring and then checked all the outlets to make sure they all worked ok. They also fixed the wiring on the problem outlet which wasn't part of the problem but since they were looking into it, they fixed that too. Their total cost was less than it would cost me to hire any of the other electricians who charged an hourly rate and after they gave me quotes for a few other jobs I have been considering so I know what to expect if I decide to do the other jobs. Finding reliable electricians is not an easy task and ill definitely be considering Sylvester Electric inc. for any future jobs. read more

Called to get a quote on rewiring They were the only one of many i contacted to get an estimate that wanted to charge $399 just to come and "inspect" I asked what exactly are they inspecting They said will look at all switches and outlets I said well that's all getting replaced anyways there's nothing to inspect Why would you need to inspect wiring if it's all getting replaced? It made me quickly think their quote would be outrageous hence they did me a favor by making me run away. Booked a morning appointment with them (Between 7:00AM & 10:00AM) through Home Advisor. Got a call around 10:00 AM on the day of the appointment that the technician was running late and would be on site around 1:00 PM. At 1:00 PM got another call informing me that the technician would not be able to make it and if I would like to reschedule to another day. I told them not to bother...made a call to another electrician who I found on Thumbtack who came out and fixed our issue immediately. Very frustrating when an "appointment" is made that keeps you waiting for a technician that never shows up. Why on earth would I double down with your company and reschedule for another day? I needed an electrician to checkout a circuit breaker that kept tripping when microwave oven was turned on --- Sylvester agreed to come that same day Their tech came and checked out every thing and found the problem to be our microwave oven ---- the tech told me that if I went out and purchased a new oven he would install it ---- I went out and purchased new microwave and he installed it and handed me a bill over $1,100 (for exactly 2 hours of services --- $550 per hour) ($945 for the microwave install alone and Lowes would have installed the microwave for $199) --- no upfront estimate of costs for any of the services was ever provided just the final invoice for $1,165 I have been asking Sylvester for some refund $$$ but so far have not come to any mutual agreement --- Their work was in general good but this appears to be a case of taking advantage and totally over charging a senior citizen client who appeared to be in a difficult situation.... I had a Sylvester's' electrician scheduled to come to my home on 8/28/23 between the hours of 7-10AM. At 9:50AM, a woman from Sylvester calls me and tells me that the electrician is going to be late. She couldn't tell me exactly when the electrician was going to be here, but she thought sometime before noon. I made the appointment one week before the service call. They have no problems with charging you to just come to your home, even if they do nothing but diagnose the problem -- because their time is valuable. To bad I can't charge them for the three hours I wasted waiting for them in my home. Poor service, poor professionalism a complete disregard for their customer s time. read more

We made an appointment with Sylvester back in October for a late-November date. Day-of we waited around until 30 minutes before the end of our appointment "window" then called to get a sense of where our electrician was. Sylvester told us they had to cancel the appointment as there had been a storm and they were dealing with that. We were frustrated they didn't reach out to us on their own, and my husband had taken off work for the morning for no reason, but understood the storm was unplanned, and rescheduled for the following week. Today, my husband again took the morning off for his "window." He called first thing in the morning to see where he was on the electrician's day sheet and was told he was the first appointment after the morning appointments and should be seen soon. Again, he waited until approx. an hour before the end of his window to call and check in (since he needed to be at work in the afternoon) -- we were told "we don't know when he'll be there." We simply cancelled the appointment. We are all for rolling with things, but the lack of communication and respect for a client's time is clear. I cannot imagine why a company would think, especially at this time of year, that clients can take off multiple days or afford to wait when one of the issues flagged is electric heat not working. $450 to install 3 light fixtures was not reasonable, especially since we just had similar work done by another contractor at another property for $250. I will credit the business for prompt service since we did need to get the job done at a specific time. They were also good at communicating arrival and came at the specified window. I have not gotten my receipt emailed to me yet. Please help. TLDR - needed work done in a pinch, it got done, communication was pro but the price was not reasonable. UPDATE: Looking at my card charges, the total was actually $529 for installing light fixtures. Looks like they still tack on the $79 estimate fee even if you go ahead with the work. That does not seem very customer-friendly. So now I can say the charge was over twice the amount that I paid another contractor for the same work. The work done was great. The electrician was friendly and knowledgeable. Yet the cost is extremely expensive. For two kitchen GFCI outlets to be replaced was $603. For comparison, I had one GFCI outlet replaced in my garage in Georgia, the cost was $125. I don't understand why everything in Massachusetts costs so much more. read more

A little more than a year ago I hired Sylvester Electric to install a Generac whole-house generator, as well as a new subpanel and all the rest of the associated electrical work. Before I hired them I asked if they also serviced the generator, which comes with a 5 year warranty, and I was assured that they would. In fact, they signed me up for a plan billed monthly which they claimed would discount any future service costs. Within a year the generator reported a problem in charging its starter battery. When I called Sylvester they said they would send someone out to service the generator for $630. When I pushed them on the exorbitant cost, they said that was for the annual service, which would include an oil change, spark plug, etc. When I told them that Generac, the manufacturer, only required a minimal service with an oil change every two years and a full maintenance every 5 years, they said that a full service was all they could do for me and admitted that if there was a charging problem, other than replacing the battery for an additional cost, they wouldn't fix the problem or even do diagnostics. When I said they had told me that they would service the generator, she said "oh yes, we do, but only this service". I feel this company was deceptive, at best, in the description of their services, tried to sell services that were not required, and only admitted after being pressed that they weren't even planning to address the problem I was having. I would also add that one can purchase a biannual service kit for this generator for about $50, less than a tenth of what they were going to charge me. As a follow up, I contacted an actual Generac authorized service company. They came out, replaced the faulty controller board under warranty, told me no other maintenance was necessary at this time, and charged me nothing. Avoid these people like the plaque. read more

I was questioned whether I had confirmed my appointment which I had. The dispatcher finally called me back at 10:10 am to say the person was running late. I had to rearrange my whole day including my work schedule. Totally unacceptable. I was 3 hours late for work already and told them not to come, I'd find someone else. I bought a house in Dracut in 2013, and when I moved in I received a welcome bag with a Sylvester Electric water bottle. I figured I would keep them in mind as I needed to eventually have the fuse panel replaced with a breaker panel. Fast forward about a year, and I get some line damage from another contractor putting in some insulation. Scott from Sylvester Electric came right out, assessed the damage, and we quoted the repair work, the panel replacement, and some additional grounding to get the house up to code. (Scott also pointed out some safety issues with the panel that were missed by the home inspector.) All three efforts were fantastic experiences, and I really can't recommend them enough for the work that they did. Scott is great, and Molly and Debby from the front office are very responsive and will call or email you back right away. That water bottle definitely served its advertising purpose! read more

I've used Sylvester Electric many times and I've gotta say that they are great for a service company. They are family owned, care about the customer experience, and are priced reasonably. It's never a good thing when you have to call an electrician but they have always been good to me and I can't complain about that. One thing to note is that you will pay a service fee but its now the industry standard and theres is cheaper than any in the area. Go ahead and call around, I did. Anyone with any electrical skill can hang a ceiling fan in less than 2 hours, so I guess the going rate is $200+ an hour. I said No Way! I still had to pay $69 for a service call. I got a message back right away, which was helpful, and it was suggested that the answering service could schedule an appointment. I called Monday morning and the number rang and rang then there was a hold message then it just disconnected. No big deal - there was an email with a link to a scheduling app. I picked from a 3 hour time window. Then I got a call saying they had my appointment, which was great! However they said there was a $79 fee for the estimate. That information was not anywhere in the initial communications and I feel it should have been. Not a good look to inform of a charge *after* an appointment has been booked. I canceled right away. A business needs to do what it feels is right, especially during busy times, however, a no-charge estimate is part of the cost of getting my business. I called Sylvester Electric because my attic fan stopped working. They said the visit would cost about $80 and they would fix the problem during that visit if possible. If not, they would give me a price so I could decide what to do. I sent them information about the fan in hopes that the information could help them know what to bring to the job. I was optimistic that they could restore power to it during one visit--fix the switch, perhaps. I thought the $80 would cover some actual work. We scheduled a visit for a specific day sometime during a 3-hour window. I waited, never heard from them during those 3 hours. I called and was told the person assigned to the job got held up on an earlier job, and they would call and let me know what time he would arrive. Another 2 hours, no call, no electrician. I called again, was told he wouldn't make it, and asked why they couldn't just have called to tell me that hours earlier. It would have been nice not to waste the whole day waiting when they obviously knew he wouldn't make it. I should have abandoned them right there, but I stupidly scheduled another day. The electrician came. He looked at the fan, did no diagnostic on it (didn't even bother determining where the power problem was), and played with his tablet to determine what it would cost for him to actually try to figure out the problem and see if he could fix it. About $450--with no guarantee that he would fix it. And if he couldn't fix it, he would give me another price to estimate how much more it would cost to have him return and work more on it. What a scam. His visit cost me $80; he did nothing. I should have known better. It smelled like a scam from the start. Buyer beware. read more

This company's pricing and business model are in severe need of an overhaul. The company needs a business expert to help them, but they could stop price gouging right away and that would help them tremendously. While the electricians who came out today were very professional and kind, they acted more like sales people at a car dealership than electricians. First they want to do a diagnostic test on my house. Their goal here is to up sell me. Then they give a ridiculous price. For me, they wanted $345 just to look at a switch that was not working properly for a flood light. The flood light is a known good light and that was clearly conveyed to them. They "called dispatch" and dispatch was willing to take $25 off that price. At that point I was disgusted as the menial amount they were willing to deduct reminded me of buying a car at a dealership. The electrician/salesperson (or vice versa) wanted to work with me but his hands were tied. This company needs to be investigated for their business practice. The worst of this was I waited for over a week to get an appointment, had to take time off, and then they wanted to charge me $69 for a dispatch fee? No way. They did nothing but come to my door and try to up sell me. I will not pay for that nor should anyone else. I am sorely disappointed in this company and hope that they would really reconsider their business model as I am sure they will lose good employees and customers if this continues. read more
